KING OF THE QUARTER: NATHANIEL AGHARESE

Posted by Jon Gordon at Jan 17, 2013 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

On Friday, January 18, 2013, the Northside Track & Field Team gathered at the main entrance of Northside College Prep, for departure to North Park University for the 8th Annual King of the Quarter!

A special thanks to North Park University Assistant Athletic Director Susan Zimmer and staff, for hosting this great event. The event was complete with a P.A. announcer that provided 200m splits, play by play, and updates throughout the evening.

Another special thanks to Whitney Young Coach Bob Geiger and Benet Academy Coach Pat Marshall for providing FAT timing for every heat of the 2013 King and Queen of the Quarter Competition!!

Every available member of the Northside Track & Field Team, regardless if they were a thrower, distance runner, sprinter, jumper, or hurdler, raced in one heat of the 400m Dash and competed in one flight of the Shot Put.

Participation was at an all time high for the event. In 2012, 28 members of the Northside Track & Field Team competed in the King of the Quarter competition. In 2013, 40 members of the Northside Track & Field Team competed in the King of the Quarter competition.

The King of the Quarter and Shot Put competition gives Northside athletes an appreciation for each others events, and makes the TEAM stronger.

The distance runners also benefited from the 400m Time Trial, by learning their maximum quarter speed. With the knowledge of their maximum quarter speed, the coaching staff is able to provide proper racing strategy for the 800m run.

Medals were awarded to the TOP THREE Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman in the Shot Put. Medals were awarded to the TOP SIX Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman in the 400m Dash. Olympic 800m runner Nick Symmonds also donated two autographed Nike hats for the overall male and female winner in the 400m dash.

Although the event was just a time trial, the crowd was so large at Alford Indoor Track at North Park University, that spectators had to stand in the balcony of the stadium to see the 400m time trial.

Despite the size of the crowd, you could hear a pin drop, when it was announced Senior Patrick Brennan and Senior Nathaniel Agharese would be in the next heat.

Northside Senior Nathaniel Agharese won the 2013 King of the Quarter competition with an outstanding time of 55.09. Nathaniel Agharese dropped 1.55 seconds (56.64) from the 2012 King of the Quarter competition!
