News and Announcements

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Maine East High School for the 48th Annual Blue Demon Invitational. It was the Mustangs first appearance in Northside history at the Blue Demon Invitational.

This year, former All State 800m runner, and Head Coach of the Maine East Track & Field Team, Scott Schultes, invited Northside to be a part of the 48th Annual Blue Demon Invitational. The meet is limited to Nine Teams, and Northside accepted the invitation to be a part of a great indoor meet.

Maine East has a long history of hosting the best Track meets in the Central Suburban league. The competition is always outstanding. They have also hosted Indoor Pentathlons at the start of every indoor track season. The Track is 160m and allows athletes to use 1/8 Pyramid spikes. Maine East also features upper deck stadium seating.

Craig Williams, parent of Northside school record holder, and Alumni legend Josh Williams, ran his first mile race (4:53), as a high school Freshman, on their Indoor Track in 1973. Craig Williams was one of the first persons to greet the Northside Mustangs upon their arrival to Maine East.

Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, a former Glenbrook North miler, ran all of his indoor and outdoor high school conference meets at Maine East from 1986-1990, and everything looked exactly the same as it did in his last visit to Maine East in 1990. Gordon raced future Olympian Robert Gary of Evanston High School in May 1990, for the Central Suburban League Conference Title. It was great experience for Gordon to have the opportunity to return to this venue with the Chicago Northside Mustangs.

The 48th Annual Blue Demon Invitational featured Deerfield, Glenbard East, Leyden, Maine West, New Trier, Northside, Schaumburg, Wheeling, and host Maine East.

Entries were limited to two athletes per event in the Varsity division. The meet featured four Sophomore-Freshman events, the Shot Put, 4x800m Relay, 4x160m Relay, and 4x400m Relay.

Medals were awarded to the top six athletes or Relays in each event.

Individual events and relays were scored on the following point scale: 10-8-6-4-2-1.

Northside Sophomore Steven Kataba ran a personal best time of 6.10 in the 50 Yards Dash. Northside Sophomore Keith Jones overslept and did not show up for the meet. It was a tragedy because Northside had over 20 sprinters sitting at home who would have liked to have had the opportunity to run in the meet. Pursuant to the rules, Northside was not allowed to make any substitutions on the day of the meet for a missing athlete. Final entries were due on the Monday prior to the Maine East Blue Demon Invitational. No points are awarded to the Team for athletes that don't compete.
