 On Saturday, April 12, 2014, the Northside Sophomore-Freshman Boys traveled to Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois for the 38th Annual Fred Zeedyk Invitational. Fred Zeedyk was an outstanding 400m runner for Niles West High School. The Fred Zeedyk Invitational has been held since 1976. The Fred Zydek Invitational is a highly competive meet. Fred Zydek would have been proud of the Chicago Northside Mustangs performance on Saturday.

 The meet featured Fenwick, Northside College Prep, Yorkville, Plainfield East, Metea Valley, Antioch, Huntley, Harlem, Mather, and host Niles West High School.

 MEDALS were awarded to the top three individuals and relays. Ribbons were awarded for places fourth through sixth. 

 Individual events and relays were scored 10-8-6-4-2-1.

 The Northside sprinters had a BIG day at the Fred Zeedyk Invitational at Niles West High School. Steven Kataba, Keith Jones, Brandon Banas, and Philip Wdowiak had an outstanding meet!

 In the 4x100m Relay, Northside finished in fourth place with an outstanding time of 47.44. The difference between fourth place to first place was a mere 0.62 of a second (46.82). Northside Sophomore Steven Kataba ran a 100m split of 11.86 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Keith Jones ran a 100m split of 11.38 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Brandon Banas ran a 100m split of 11.93 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak anchored the Mustangs past Metea Valley, Harlem, Yorkville, Fenwick, and Plainfield East with a 11.34 100m split for an official time of 47.44. Steven Kataba, Keith Jones, Brandon Banas, and Philip Wdowiak were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in fourth place overall.

 The Northside Sophomore 4x100m Relay is now within 2.56 seconds of the Varsity School record, and 10.60 seconds of the World Record!

 In the 100m Dash Prelims, Northside Sophomore Keith Jones QUALIFIED for the Finals with an outstanding time of 12.14. Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak DROPPED 0.26 of a second (12.47) for a PERSONAL BEST time of 12.21. Philip Wdowiak came within 0.01 of a second of qualifying for the 100m Finals!

 In the 110m Hurdles Prelims, Northside Sophomore Justin Washington hurdled an official time of 20.27. Northside Sophomore Derrick Staples hurdled a PERSONAL BEST time of 20.89.

 In the 200m Dash Prelims, Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak QUALIFIED for the Finals with a PERSONAL BEST time of 25.71. The best was yet to come. Wdowiak had an incredible performance, and a BIG time drop in the 200m Dash Finals! Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby ran an outstanding time of 28.75.

 In the Long Jump, Northside Freshman Brandon Banas earned a RIBBON by placing fifth overall with an outstanding jump of 16'10.25. Northside Sophomore Garret Barch had an official jump of 13'11.50.

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Sophomore Piotr Wojcik finished in eighth place with a PERSONAL BEST jump of 35'10. Northside Freshman Jack Nolan had an official jump of 26'00.50.

 In the High Jump, Northside Sophomore Keith Jones finished in seventh place with an outstanding leap of 5'2. Northside Sophomore Garret Barch finished in eighth place with a leap of 5'0.

 In the Shot Put, Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby finished in ninth place with a throw of 34'01. Northside Sophomore Simon Lothschutz had a nice throw at an official distance of 25'02.50.

 In the Discus, Northside Sophomore Gabriel Krell IMPROVED 4'0 with a PERSONAL BEST throw of 66'01. Northside Sophomore Simon Lothschutz IMPROVED 6'0 with a PERSONAL BEST throw of 58'11.

 In the 3200m run, Northside Freshman phenom Kyle Friedler ran the first mile in 5:25, and then ran the final mile in 5:58 for an official time of 11:23.37. Northside Sophomore Sarrin Chethik ran the first mile in 5:32, and then ran the final mile in 5:58 for an official time of 11:30.75.

 In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Northside Junior Kenny Dumez ran the first 400m in 68 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 78 seconds for an outstanding 800m split of 2:26.24, and then made a perfect exchange to Senior Alex Gordon. Alex Gordon ran the first 400m in 76 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 82 seconds for an 800m split of 2:38.57, and then made a nice exchange to Freshman Jack Webster. Jack Webster dropped 1.05 seconds (2:46) off his best 800m time, by running the first 400m in 79 seconds, and then running the final 400m in 85 seconds for a PERSONAL BEST 800m split of 2:44.95, and then made a perfect exchange to Freshman Vladimir Andrade. Vladimir Andrade dropped 7 seconds (3:08) off his best 800m time, by running the first 400m in 85 seconds, and then running the final 400m in 96 seconds for a PERSONAL BEST 800m split of 3:01.08 to anchor Northside to an official time of 10:51.40. Northside Juniors Joseph Dschida and Nathaniel Neguisse were scratched from the relay. 

 In the Varsity 4x100m Relay, Northside Junior Max McCoy ran a 12.59 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Junior Kenny Dumez ran a 12.77 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Junior Connor Fulton ran a 13.21 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Matt Osborne ran a 13.45 100m split to anchor the Mustangs to eighth place with an official time of 52.49. Northside Junior Christopher Tam was scratched from the relay.

 In the 3200m run, Northside Junior Adrian Black DROPPED 15 SECONDS (10:20), by running the first mile in 5:01, and then running the final mile in 5:04 for a PERSONAL BEST time of 10:05.19. Adrian Black is now within ten seconds of Northside Alumni legend Cooper Eben (9:55) on the 3200m All Time list. Adrian Black ran 400m splits of 72, 76 (2:28), 76 (3:44), 77 (5:01), 76 (6:17), 76 (7:33), 77 (8:50), and the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 75 seconds for an official time of 10:05.19.

 Northside Senior Cesar Rufino ran an impressive first mile in 4:59, and then ran the final mile in 5:34 for an outstanding time of 10:33.58. Cesar Rufino ran 400m splits of 66, 74 (2:20), 79 (3:39), 80 (4:59), 85 (6:24), 87 (7:51), 83 (9:14), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 79 seconds for an official time of 10:33.58.

 In the 110m Hurdles Finals, Northside Senior Lucien Fitzpatrick finished in SECOND place with an outstanding time of 16.17. Lucien Fitzpatrick was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall. Northside Junior Porter Abbey finished in seventh place with an outstanding time of 18.25.

 In the 800m run, Northside Senior Simon Kafka ran the first 400m in 62 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 61 seconds to finish in THIRD place with an outstanding time of 2:03.65. It is very rare to see an athlete run negative splits in the 800m run. Kafka ran an outstanding race. Simon Kafka was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in third place overall. Northside Junior Max McCoy ran the first 400m in 64 seconds, and was on pace for a new personal record, but an athlete collapsed in front of him a few meters before the finish line, forcing McCoy to slow down and use the outside lanes to avoid the collapsed runner. McCoy ran the final 400m in 70 seconds for an official time of 2:14.21.

 In the 4x200m Relay, Sophomore Andy Dominquez ran a 29.80 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Freshman Jacob Lemke ran a 31.03 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Michael Rupprecht ran a 29.21 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Jack Webster anchored the Mustangs with a 30.42 200m split for an official time of 2:01.30.

 In the 400m Dash, Northside Junior Tom Frejowski finished in fourth place with an official time of 53.11. Tom Frejowski was awarded a MEDAL for finishing fourth overall. Northside Junior Matt Osborne was scratched from the 400m dash.

 In the 300m Hurdles, Northside Senior Lucien Fitzpatrick finished in SECOND place with an outstanding time of 42.05. Lucien Fitzpatrick was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall. Northside Junior Porter Abbey hurdled an outstanding time of 46.20.
