Les Fletcher - D32 Veteran Umpire & Volunteer

Posted by Bob Diosdado at Sep 26, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

I have been involved in Little League for 25 years and have been fortunate to meet many people.  A good friend and a dedicated Little League volunteer who I have known for 15 years from District 32 passed away on Wednesday September 26th. Les Fletcher worked closely with me on the event staff at the Little League Western Region tournament for 13 years. Below is a write up from District 32 about Les that I would like to share with you.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of longtime District 32 umpire and volunteer Les Fletcher. Les passed away on September 26th after a short illness.

He leaves behind a legacy perhaps unmatched in the history of our district. Les was involved in Little League for several decades, most of that time devoted to umpiring, training and mentoring other umpires. Les was the longest serving District 32 Umpire-in-Chief, and served on our district staff for well over 20 years. Most recently, he had umpired numerous games for the Mira Mesa West Little League, where his son is a coach and his grandson a player.

One of the highlights of Les’ time in Little League (and a highlight for all of District 32), was his well-deserved umpiring assignment in the 2005 Little League World Series. An honor coveted by thousands of volunteer Little League umpires, Les ably called several games in that year’s tournament.

Les also served for many years as part of the security staff during the West Regional tournament each summer in San Bernardino, worked as a tournament director for district tournaments, and spent many years leading the district rules and umpire clinics held during the winter and spring.

Seldom has there been anyone with a greater love for Little League, volunteering and the importance of quality umpiring. A retired and proud Navy CWO4 Les brought a sense of fairness, honor and a belief in the rules to every game that he umpired. His gruff exterior belied a heart of gold, and no one cared more than Les about putting kids first in Little League. His focus on safety, equal enforcement of the rules, and good behavior from adults, were all designed to give kids the best Little League experience possible.

Those who knew Les well will never forget his generosity, his wealth of knowledge about Little League and its rules, his great sense of humor (a surprise to some), and his always entertaining stories.

While the shock and sadness of Les Fletcher’s passing are with us today, we know that his legacy and all that he meant to Little League and District 32 will live on tomorrow, and for as long as Little League is played in our community.

The 2013 District 33 Fall Ball season underway. All schedules are now posted.  Fall Ball is a great opportunity for any player moving up a division or just wanting to improve their baseball skills. The 10 week season will conclude on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Games are generally played on Sunday afternoon.

Fall Ball is a time for training and development of players as well as umpires. Players will learn valuable tools that are important as they move up in a division or are just beginning their baseball careers. We are encouraging all managers to use this time to develop players in different field positions and promote pitching. All players and coaches are expected to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

District 33 Code of Conduct

Posted by Bob Diosdado at Sep 4, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

If you would like to print out a copy, please click on the following link: District Code of Conduct

D-33 Parent Code of Conduct

Preamble:
The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character."
 I therefore agree:
1. I will not force my child to participate in sports.
2. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults.
3. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
4. I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the league.
5. I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
6. I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
7. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and wellbeing of the athletes.
8. I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
9. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
10. I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
11. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
12. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participant for making a mistake or losing a competition.
13. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also deemphasize games and competition in the lower age groups.
14. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for
my child to win.
15. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
16. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
17. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices, unless I am one of the official
coaches of the team.
18. I will not use social media sites to discuss negative opinions about players, coaches, managers and volunteers.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action that could include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Verbal warning by league official, manager/coach, and/or board member of league.
  • Written warning
  • Parental game suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by league involved
  • Parental season suspension
