News and Announcements

Jeremie Simmons, a 6-2 junior college guard, is scheduled to visit the Butler campus on the weekend of April 11-13. He also has upcoming official visits to Alabama and South Florida. That's the word from Steve Schmidt, who coached Mott Community College of Flint, Mich., to a second consecutive NJCAA Division II basketball championship. Mott finished 35-2, beating Columbus State 83-73 in the title game Saturday. Simmons scored 23 in the final game at Danville, Ill.Schmidt said the Butler coaching staff has been "thorough and consistent" in recruiting Simmons, a graduate of Chicago's Von Steuben High School. Simmons averaged 21-plus points a game and made more than 100 3-pointers this season, according to the NJCAA Web site. He is likely to be chosen Player of the Year in NJCAA Division II. One caution: NJCAA Division II is a low level of college basketball. If Simmons signs with the Bulldogs, they would have no scholarships to award next year. That would perhaps be a gamble. But Butler is unlikely to find a high school senior who could make as big an immediate impact. Plus, that would help balance Butler's classes, putting Simmons in the same junior class with Willie Veasley, DeAundre Cranston and Elliott Engelmann.Signing of Simmons would contribute to a glut of guards: Simmons, Zach Hahn, Shawn Vanzant, Grant Leiendecker and incoming freshmen Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack and Chase Stigall. However, someone could redshirt. Hayward and Stigall are as much wings as genuine guards. There is certainly no guarantee on Simmons. By any measure, though, this has already been an extraordinary recruiting class for a mid-major program.

The Demons Blue Team got off to a slow start in the tourney.

By playoff time the team regrouped as the coaches Victor DeJesus, Terrance Ricks, and Marchello Williams motivated and taught the skills needed to the team move from last place to third place after a close loss in the semifinal game of the playoffs.

Nathan Brooks, a 6'3 guard and one of the area's top 8th grade players picked up MVP honors leading a good nucleus to kick off it winter program.  He is surrounded by other top players:  DeQuan Horn, Ramon Ajose, Orande Williams, Josh Bowen, Ethan Lee, and Christian James.

The Demons staff is looking forward to having two competitive teams this year!
