'Rude Awakening' for Red Raiders

Posted by Randell Owens at Oct 6, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Reprinted from the Athens Banner-Herald October 7, 2006 edition Habersham Central 24, Madison County 0 By Craig Peters craig.peters@onlineathens.com Story updated at 2:45 AM on Saturday, October 7, 2006 DANIELSVILLE - Matt Roberts kept escaping, and so did the football. Habersham Central's senior running back rumbled for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, and Madison County fumbled on three of its first four possessions. Habersham Central capitalized on the gifts and outrushed Madison County by 194 yards in a 24-0 win on Friday to remain perfect in Region 8-AAAA North. "That was a rude awakening," Madison County senior quarterback Jarrod Owens said. "That was probably the worst game - we were just sloppy. We thought we were good after beating Clarke Central and didn't need to practice hard." Roberts did the brunt of his damage in the final 9:26 of the first half after a 42-minute lightning delay. Before halftime, he rushed 10 times for 85 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown four plays after Madison County's second fumble to put Habersham Central (3-2, 2-0) up 10-0. "Before the (delay), we were a little tight," Roberts said. "We went in, relaxed, goofed off a little bit and came out and got our motors running." Prior to the delay, Madison County (4-2, 1-2) had 90 yards, compared to 68 for Habersham Central, and trailed by three. Madison County finished with 194 total yards against 272 by Habersham Central. "Our adrenaline was gone and the butterflies returned," said Owens, who went 20-for-36 for 174 yards. Rather than being loose, Madison County had lots of time to think about its first two fumbles. One came at the Habersham Central 22 on Madison County's opening drive. The second one occurred at Habersham Central's 40 early in the second quarter and helped end a scoreless tie. Ty Ellison recovered the ball and appeared to have a shot at the end zone, running 30 yards until Madison County sophomore Aldreakos Allen tackled him at the Red Raiders' 30. Roberts plowed for 20 yards on the next play, but the Red Raiders forced a 25-yard field goal by Habersham Central's Kyle Stephenson. Madison County found little success the rest of the night. "The bottom line is you've got to be able to run the ball and hold on to it," Madison County coach Randell Owens said. "We had some success early, but after we got behind, if you keep running, the clock keeps running." Madison County rushed 10 times and lost 23 yards after the delay. Habersham Central, however, ran 40 times for 177 in that span. Habersham Central quarterback Bo Hatchett completed only 3 of 9 passes for 58 yards - all to Tavarres King, but the completions were significant gains. The threat of the deep ball helped Habersham Central power the ball. Allen had six catches for 55 yards, and Marcus Grant had six for 67 for Madison County. Habersham Central coach Gene Cathcart drove the final spike with a successful fake-punt from his 47 on a fourth and 4. It set up Roberts' final score. Last year, Cathcart called a fake punt pass that failed when tied at 7 late against Madison County, and the Red Raiders scored three plays later in a win. "Those are feast or famine," Cathcart said. "Hopefully, my wife wasn't getting an earful like she did last year." Game report • Turning Point: Habersham Central's Ty Ellison recovered Madison County's second fumble and returned it 30 yards to set up a field goal that broke a scoreless tie early in the second quarter. • Key Stat: After a 42-minute delay, Habersham Central outrushed Madison County by 200 yards. Habersham Central ran for 177 and Madison County lost 23. • Impact: Madison County (4-2, 1-2 in Region 8-AAAA North) dropped an important subregion game, while Habersham Central (3-2, 2-0) remained a half-game behind Dacula for the lead. RAIDER vs. RAIDER

RAIDER vs. Raider Homecoming Presents Challenges for MCHS
Reprinted from the Madison County Journal October 5, 2006 edition

By Ben Munro
The bookies in Vegas don’t put betting lines on high school games. But if they did, the oddsmakers would file this one under the “pick ‘em” category. With one Raider team pitted against another Raider outfit, it doesn’t appear that the monikers are the only thing that will be close in Danielsville come Friday.
“(It’s) just about 50-50,” MCHS head coach Randell Owens said of his assessment of Madison County’s homecoming showdown with Habersham Central. “Whoever shows up and doesn’t make mistakes.”
While Habersham Central won’t threaten with the scary turbo-jet speed of MCHS’s foe last week, Clarke Central, the Mt. Airy Raiders are expected to bring plenty to the table to hold up its end of the bargain. “(Habersham is) big and strong—the same guys we’ve been playing the last two years—definitely the same guys we played against last year,” Owens said.
Habersham Central is off to a 2-2 start, coming off a 35-0 blanking of struggling Winder-Barrow this past Friday. Owens said the coach Gene Cathcart’s Raiders are as fundamentally sound a team as his group will see. “They are well-coached,” Owens said. “They don’t beat themselves.”
Cathcart, who has a 15-20 record in Mt. Airy, sees two teams that will play a similar type of efficient football Friday in this key sub-region battle. “I think both teams will play awfully hard,” he said. “Both teams are fundamentally sound.”
Owens agrees there are similarities. Neither team boasts great overall speed but have comparable size offensively while he said that the Raiders from the north will be bigger defensively. “They kind of mirror us to a certain degree,” Owens said.
Madison County won’t be totally exempt from having to contain a burner this week. Habersham does possess at least one game breaker—receiver Tavarres King who has 178 yards receiving and three touchdowns heading into last week. He’s complemented by an experienced quarterback in Bo Hatchett and a solid running back in Matt Roberts. King’s ability will be a cause for RAIDER concern Friday. “He’s for real,” Owens said. “He’s got good hands. He’s explosive.”
Madison County has been playing good football as of late, nearly upsetting Dacula and beating Clarke Central by two touchdowns. The RAIDERS are coming off a 34-point performance against the Gladiators and giving up only 14 points a games this year.
“They’re doing a great job,” Cathcart said. “They’re very well coached and play hard . . . (quarterback) Jarrod Owens does a good job of leading the team.” Cathcart said his team will have to put together some drives this year against Madison County after scoring just one touchdown in last year’s loss. “Last year, we felt they did as good as job as anybody against us defensively,” he said. He also said his defense will have to content with Madison County’s versatile offensive scheme, one that can spread the ball around or move to a tight formation. “We’ll have to adjust to both of those,” Cathcart said.
Meanwhile, Habersham certainly has the respect of Madison County players. “They’re very sound,” said Jarrod Owens, adding that he worked closely with one of Habersham’s coaches during a summer camp at Furman. “Very much like Dacula. . .”They’re very well coached.”
