Raiders’ Buried in ‘The Bone Yard’

Posted by Randell Owens at Nov 26, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Reprinted from the Madison County Journal November 24, 2006 edition Madison Co. ambushed early in playoff loss BY ZACH MITCHAM The Raiders won big in the state playoffs Friday night — just not the red ones. No, Friday belonged to the East Paulding Raiders, who are the Atlanta suburban, high school version of the west-coast Oakland black. The 10-1 East Paulding squad put the Madison County season to rest, 51-6, in “The Bone Yard” Friday night, playing like Oakland, circa 1977. Madison County fans braved Friday afternoon metro gridlock and filled the visiting metal bleachers. But those seats were hardly warm before the 8-3 Danielsville squad was mortally gashed by the home Raiders. “We came out flat; we came out dead,” said Raider quarterback Jarrod Owens. “They came out hungry. They were on a mission. They were determined. They’re a great football team, much like Hab. (Habersham Central). We came off slow and it got us.” East Paulding picked off an Owens pass on the second play of scrimmage Friday. On the next play, East Paulding standout quarterback/punter/kicker Chas Henry completed a 26-yard touchdown over the middle to put the home squad up 7-0 just 55 seconds into the game. East Paulding added scores of 36, 48 and 6 yards in the first quarter, before tacking on a 19-yard score with just eight seconds left in the half to carry a 35-0 lead into intermission. The home team completely dominated the first half of play, racking up 234 yards of offense, compared to just 75 for the Red Raiders. Madison County tallied 172 total yards of offense Friday to 408 by East Paulding. The visiting Raiders, who were constantly flagged by referees Friday evening, were forced to punt after three-and out possessions through much of the game and didn’t manage a first down until early in the second quarter. East Paulding added three more scores in the third quarter — touchdown runs of 6 and 2 yards, and a safety — to pull ahead 51-0 after three quarters. Madison County scored its lone touchdown with 4:58 to go in the game, when Owens carried the ball in from 11 yards out on fourth and four.
