They’ve Been Chomping at the Bit for This One
Raiders-Elbert Rematch After ’06 Rout
by Ben Munro
A 49-7 drubbing last year might have created a little border tension between a pair of counties separated by the Broad River.
Madison County scored a 42-point victory last year over its Elbert County neighbors who will cross the river Friday for a non-region matchup with the Raiders in Danielsville. Will last year’s rout be on Elbert County players’ minds when the old rivals tee it up on Friday?
At least one Madison County player thinks so.
“Oh, yeah, they’ll be gunning for blood,” MCHS senior placekicker and punter Jack Orr said. “They’ll be gunning for blood.”
Raider head coach Randell Owens spent several years as an assistant at Elbert County and said he was there long enough to know a loss like that hasn’t sat well with the Blue Devils and their fan base. Elbert County, which won a state title in 1995 (when Owens was there), isn’t accustomed to losses like that at home, he said.
“Not only did we beat them, but we embarrassed them,” Owens said. “Not only did we embarrass them, but we did it in the Granite Bowl.”
Once rivals, the schools had stopped playing each other in football after 1997. That was until last year’s Raider stoning of Elbert County in the Granite Bowl.
Owens said he brought this game back on the schedule to generate a good gate, cut down on travel and foster a nice non-region rivalry against a winning program.
He expects big things for Friday’s meeting in only the second year of resuming the series.
“This could very well be the biggest gate in the school’s history if things work out right Friday,” Owens said.
Madison County opened the season with a win over a similar-type rivalry when it thumped Franklin County 23-6 this past Friday, pushing its winning streak to five in that series.
Meanwhile Elbert County won its first game under new coach Brent Miller by beating Crescent, SC 14-6 this past Friday.
The Blue Devils sunk to an abysmal 1-9 record last year under coach Eddie Roberts’ only season.
Enter Miller, who was hired to restore the Blue Devils to glory. “Yeah, they’re better than they were last year,” Owens said. “They’re better, and we are not as good.”
Specifically, Owens said the Blue Devil offensive line is much improved, presenting a challenge to the Raiders up front. Then Owens said the Blue Devils have enough speed on the perimeter that they’re subject to break a long score.
But they’re also a physical team, which is Miller’s philosophy, Owens said.
“They’re going to try to beat you in a fist fight,” he said. “We’re going to have to respond to that.”
And Owens doesn’t downplay the Elbert County revenge factor.
“They’ve been chomping at the bit for this one since last year,” he said.
But Madison County is looking forward to the game as well. Orr said playing nearby opponents makes for a fun start to the year. “It’s always great to start with border rivals in our non-region (games) to start the season,” he said. “We love it . . . We love playing these guys, because they’re all good. They set the bar high for us. We just look forward to laying them. Because they’re good teams, we know we’ll get tested by them.”

Madison County 23, Franklin County 6
DANIELSVILLE - For a player who was auditioning for the starting quarterback job, Spencer Baird made sure his performance Friday was good enough for the starring role.
Madison County's signal-caller tormented Franklin County's defense on the ground and through the air, leading the Red Raiders past the Lions 23-6 at Raider Field.
Commanding the no-huddle, spread offense with ease, Baird left little doubt concerning the direction his team wants to head.
With a calm demeanor, Baird would run up to the line, wait for the defense to set up in its coverage scheme, then audible to methodically pick apart a young Lions defense.
"We knew that the defense was going to get it done for us," Baird said. "We just had to make sure that we did our part, too."
Baird did his part.
He went 4-for-10 passing and rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown - all of which came in the first half.
"He's been around for a year and learned the offense, so he's not intimidated," Red Raiders coach Russell Owens said. "He did a lot of good things, but there are also some areas that are correctable."
One of those areas Baird can improve upon is his second-half decision making.
Already up 16-6, Baird telegraphed two passes into a crowded Lions secondary, and gave the visitors plenty of opportunities to close the gap.
Fortunately for the Red Raiders, their defense was stifling throughout the night - limiting the Lions to just 59 total yards - and the punt coverage team blocked two Lions punts.
"(Baird) will learn through experience, and the good thing is all of the mistakes we had are correctable," Owens said.
Aldreakis Allen continually ran off the right tackle, and behind a behemoth offensive line that has three starters who weigh more than 300 pounds. He amassed 84 yards on 17 carries and three catches for 37 yards. Cello Latimer added 68 yards on 15 carries.
"Those lineman are huge and those guys run hard," Lions head coach Danny Durham said.
"When they got the lead, they just sat on the ball and wore us out."
Whenever Lions running back Jay Moon appeared to light a spark under an otherwise stagnant offense, the Red Raiders defense and special teams were there to plug the holes.
"They gave us some chances but we couldn't capitalize," Durham said. "We did a good job battling, but we've still got a young team and we'll fix some things."
Baird and 6-foot-3, 190-pound Jacob Owens have been evenly splitting snaps throughout the summer and even this week.
His opportunities to grab the reins of the offense may have been slim if he didn't perform in the season opener.
"It made me feel good to come out and play the way I did," Baird said. "There's a lot of things I need to work on, but it felt good."
