Prep Stars: Heated Sibling RIvalry

There's nothing similar about the blood pumping through their veins. No resemblance in their faces or the way they walk and talk.

Madison County's Cello Latimer, left and Clarke-Central's Ryan Faust, who consider themselves like brothers, will be playing against each other tonight in Danielsville.

No overwhelming characteristic to suggest a brotherly connection.

But Ryan Faust and Cello Latimer still consider each other family.

"I basically call him my brother because he's just like another brother," Faust said.

They live in separate homes in bordering counties, but on weekends the close friends are inseparable.

"Wherever I go, he goes," Latimer said. "Wherever he goes, I go."

And like brothers often do, they quarrel. The main point of contention this week is football. Specifically, it's the game between Latimer's Madison County Red Raiders and Faust's Clarke Central Gladiators.

Latimer - who considers Faust's father, Roy, to be his father figure - is less inclined than Ryan, a sophomore, to talk about who will win the game. But the senior can't help throwing the occasional verbal jab.

"Ryan was like, 'We're going to beat y'all,' " Latimer said. "I was like, 'I don't think so. You play defense don't you? ... I know I'm going to kill you then.' "

Faust, an outside linebacker, is hoping for a chance to go head-to-head against Latimer, a running back. Ryan's older brother - Dominique Faust, who now plays at Louisiana Tech - hit Latimer at the goal line in Madison County's 34-21 victory over Clarke Central last season.

"I think it will just be a regular normal tackle for me," said the 6-foot-2, 198-pound Ryan Faust. "I don't think he's going to run me over. I don't think he's going to give me a shot at him. ... I don't think he can mess with me."

Due to the close proximity of the teams and Faust and Latimer's tight relationship, Madison County coach Randell Owens said he told his team to avoid bragging and talking about the game too much this week.

He compared it to a popular tourism slogan.

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and what happens in practice stays in practice," Owens said. "(Georgia coach) Mark Richt is sitting there banning the newspaper, radio, press, TV from coming to his practice. I said, 'Heck, y'all live with half the enemy. Y'all go home and see them on weekends, they go to your place. You've got to keep it down home.' "

Owens knows what it's like to play against a brother.

When his school district lines in Alabama were redrawn more than 30 years ago, Owens had the choice, as a senior, to stay at his school. But his brother, Paul, went to a new school. When Randell was a senior, his team played Paul's team.

The linemen never got a chance to face each other one-on-one, but Randell Owens still reminds his brother about the outcome of that game: 49-15.

"We kicked their tails," Owens said. "He still hates it."

Owens told Latimer to forget about Madison County's past three victories over Clarke Central. Lose to them this year, Owens said, and he will never stop hearing about it.

"We lost to Dacula last week, but you'll never see them boys again," Owens said. "But this one, you'll be eating Sunday dinner with this one till you're 80. You'll be sitting in the old folks home and he'll be dogging you about it. This is bragging rights for eternity."

It's a battle in which Roy Faust doesn't plan to pick a side.

He hasn't decided where he will sit tonight. Most likely, he will stand behind one of the end zones at Raider Field and hope for a tie.

"That would be nice," he said. "If Cello and Madison County wins, that would be fine. If Ryan and Clarke Central wins, that would be fine, too. I just want them to have a good time."

Annual Battle with Glads Always Big

MCHS Seeks First Sub-region Win of Year Against Clarke

BY BEN MUNRO

In the moments following Madison County’s loss to Dacula this past Friday, Raider head coach Randell Owens figured that he really didn’t have to say much to get his team looking ahead to its next opponent.

‘Clarke Central — ‘nuff said. We go back to work Monday,” Owens told his team in the post-game huddle.

The Raider head coach agreed that it doesn’t take much for his players to get keyed-up for the Gladiators, who are off to a 2-1-1 start after clipping Loganville 22-20 this past Friday.

As far as a region rival goes, this might be the closest thing the Raiders have going right now. Clarke Central is geographically close — 18.4 miles away — and familiar to Madison County athletes.

“It’s a game that a lot of kids are close to in that we compete overlapping sports against them be it track, baseball track other sports … they get to know a lot of the kids that way,” Owens said. “We’ve got several of our kids who have relatives playing for them.”

The Raiders have had the upper hand on the gridiron right now, at least.

Perhaps one of the turning points in Madison County’s football fortunes was its 8-7 win over Clarke Central in 2004.

With victories again in both 2005 and 2006, Madison County has won all three of its meetings with the tradition-rich Gladiators who own a stellar 311-130 record since 1970. The Milledge Avenue school boasts three state titles and 14 region championships. However, the program has sputtered ever since a 10-3 season in 1997. The Gladiators have gone just 51-46-0 in that span and have been through four different head coaches.

Owens said the Gladiators’ history might be something more compelling to fans and coaches more familiar with Clarke Central’s glory years rather than the players.
But what the Raider players are familiar with is the talent brimming from this program that returned to the playoffs last year under Leroy Ryals after rebounding from a 4-6 campaign in Williams Devane’s final year. Madison County won solidly last year, 34-21, in Athens, but Clarke Central managed to break enough long touchdowns — one went for 41 yards and the other for 65 — to keep things interesting.

“You won’t find a better team than them athletically, especially the skill people,” Owens said.

Madison County will have to find a way to slow star tailback Darreion Robinson and company. Robinson ran for nearly 200 yards against Loganville.

Owens said the key to containing the Gladiators is controlling the line of scrimmage and containing plays to the outside in order to eliminate big plays.

That will require everyone understanding their role on defense, Owens said, and playing responsibly against the option, misdirection plays and play action passes.
“Any break down along the chain and you’re dead,” he said.

The Raiders enter this matchup trying to avoid a second loss in sub-region play after losing their 8A-AAAA opener to Dacula. After facing Clarke Central, Madison County doesn’t want to head into next week’s matchup with Habersham Central staring at an 0-2 record in the sub-region standings.

Each week is big from this point on for the Raiders, Owens said.

“When you look at the whole picture and of our goal of having a winning season and trying to get to the playoffs, the big picture is that they’re all that way from here on out,” he said. “They’ll all be that way each week.”
