Opponent's Record Doesn't Seem to Add Up
reprinted from The Madison County Journal October 16, 2008 edition
by Ben Munro
“You look at the scores and then you look at the game on the film and the scores don’t really match-up to what you’re seeing on film,” said Owens, who was Heritage’s head coach from 2001-2003.
Well, Madison County (2-5) will try to add another loss to Heritage’s mysterious season when the Raiders face the Patriots Friday at home at 7:30 p.m.
Heritage’s offense is headed by “a very, very athletic quarterback,” Owens said, who throws the ball well but probably gives opposing defense more fits with his mobility.
One of his favorite biggest targets is 6’7” 240-lb. tight end Justin Jones, who is being courted by major college programs like Alabama, South Carolina and Kentucky.
“He’ll be playing in the SEC somewhere next year,” Owens said.
While the Raider defense will try to match-up with Jones, the Madison County offense must find a way to handle another Jones — defensive tackle Melvin Jones, a 6’1”, 310-pounder who is getting looks from Auburn and Georgia Tech.
As for additional evidence of the Patriots’ ability, they beat defending region co-champion Salem 21-7 earlier this year. Then consider that it took region-leading Clarke Central five overtimes to beat Heritage. Athletically, Owens said the Patriots are as good as any team Madison County has lined up against with the exception of Cedar Shoals.
Again, that Patriot record is an enigma.
“Bottom line, the record’s not really what they’re all about … We’re going to have to play awfully well to win,” Owens said. “This game we can win if we play awfully well.”
As for records, Madison County had hoped its won-loss tally heading into this game would be better than 2-5 after it took Loganville to the brink last Friday.
The Raiders led until 31 seconds remaining in that game, and then had a chance to tie the game with a field goal as time expired.
As painful as the loss was, Owens said it’s time to move on.
“Come Sunday night, throw it in the trash can, forget about it win or lose,” he said. “Let’s forget about it, either way, win or lose.”
Late Score Lifts Loganville Over Madison County
reprinted from The Madison County Journal October 11, 2008 edition
Not to be outdone, Madison County drove all the way to the Red Devil 21 where Branden Wilson – attempting only the second varsity field goal of his life – missed a 38-yard kick as time expired.
The heartbreaking loss, the team’s fourth straight, dropped Madison County to 2-5 and most likely out of state playoff contention.
The Raiders face Heritage next Friday at home.
Attempting to bounce back from three-straight losses, Madison County executed a smash-mouth, conservative game plan to great success Friday. Operating frequently out of the I-formation, Madison County rushed 49 times for 201 yards while attempting just seven passes.
The Raiders led 10-0 at halftime, getting a one-yard score from Claude Johnson on the first play of the second quarter and then a 30-yard field goal from Wilson as the half ended. Quarterback Jacob Owens set up Johnson’s touchdown with a 44-yard scamper on an option keeper and later put Madison County in position for the field goal by hitting Al Allen on a 40-yard pass down to the Loganville 12. It was Owens’ only pass attempt of the first half.
Owens finished with 55 yards on 13 carries to lead the Raiders. He added 68 passing yards, completing four of six attempts.
Meanwhile, Madison County’s defense stuffed Loganville’s rushing game all evening, allowing just 95 yards.
In fact, the Raiders had surrendered only 189 yards of total offense in the game prior to Loganville’s final drive, which started at the Red Devil 5 with 1:59 left.
That’s when Loganville quarterback A. J. Schmidt started picking Madison County’s defense apart, completing six passes covering 84 yards to put the Red Devils on the Raider 1. Loganville then scored on the ground to put the Red Devils up by three.
Madison County started its final drive at its own 35 with just 31 seconds left and Owens completed three passes to keep the Raiders' hopes alive. The third went to Stacy Mack, which drew a personal foul from Loganville.
The infraction moved the Raiders up to the Loganville the 21 with just three seconds left as Madison County sent the field goal unit on the field to try to send the game into overtime.
The Raiders had seemingly put the dagger in Loganville, earlier, with three minutes left in the game.
That’s when defenders Cody Esco and James Anglin jarred the ball loose from Red Devil running back Mykel Wyyet and Jeremiah Nesmith covered the fumble to give Madison County the ball and the lead late.
However, Loganville’s defense came up with a big stop, forcing Madison County to punt with 2:05.

Raider Football Team ‘Not Ready to Call It a Year Yet’
reprinted from The Madison County Journal October 9, 2008 edition
by Ben Munro
Listening to outside conversation about a losing streak — or even a winning streak — can be detrimental to a football team, Raider coach Randell Owens said.
So Owens said it’s important that his players not get too caught up in the talk about the team as it lost its last three games.
“So that’s the challenge, just trying to get them to realize that fans really don’t have anything to do with the game one way or another,” Owens said.
That said, the Raiders fell 28-7 to Habersham Central last Friday to drop them to 2-4 in region play.
Not making matters any easier, now, is vastly-improved Loganville (4-1), which the Raiders play Friday.
The always-physical Red Devils have added the dimension of speed this year and that’s been bad news for the rest of the region as the Walton County school has gotten off to a fast 4-1 start. “Coach (Eric) Godfree said this is the first time that he’s had any speed,” Owens said.
Things are certainly starting to go the Red Devils’ way in year five of Godfree’s tenure at Loganville. In search of their first winning season since 1999, the Red Devils are just three points away from being undefeated. The Red Devils’ only loss came to Salem (10-7). Just 4-6 a year ago, Loganville handed region-leading Clarke Central its only loss of the season and the Red Devils also knocked off Cedar Shoals.
Owens said Godfrey simply has more weapons at his disposal with talent at the skill positions. “He has got some bullets in his gun that he didn’t have in the past,” Owens said. As for Madison County, the Raiders returned to the practice field Monday with the challenges of the season in mind.
Four games remain this season. “They practiced hard,” Owens said. “They worked good. They’re kids. They’re disappointed with the lack of success. But they’re not ready to call it a year yet.”
NOTES: Madison County leads 4-0 in the series with Loganville, but those four wins haven’t come easy. The Raiders have won by eight or less points in the last three meetings. “It is never easy,” Owens said. “We have never had an easy game with Loganville.”
