Things are about to get a lot more exciting on Friday nights in Madison County. The Madison County High School Red Raiders are ready to retake the yard and kick off the 2010 season of high school football.

This week, the Red Raiders head over to Hart County for the first of two preseason scrimmages. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Even with the scrimmage against Hart this week and the annual Red versus Gray scrimmage next Thursday, head coach Randell Owens and the team are focused on a bigger game – the opener against Flowery Branch.

“We’ll focus on the scrimmage about the day before the scrimmage,” Owens said. “We’re focusing on game one against Flowery Branch.”

There is a lot for the Red Raiders to look at as they prepare to face the newcomer to the region. Flowery Branch is coming in with a Final Four state playoff finish under their belts and a 10-4 record from class AAA.

With the opener left to Madison County, it’s up to the Red Raiders to make a good first impression on the newcomers.

“The kids are working hard and it will be interesting to see how far we can take them in the next three weeks,” Owens said.

While the team may be looking past the scrimmages, the film from Friday’s game will be invaluable to coach Owens and the staff as they put in the final practice days before the big opener.

Hart County will not be a push over.

The Bulldogs made it into the playoffs last season and ended with an 8-3 record.

At least this week fans will get a taste of what is to come on Aug. 27, when Madison County official starts the season.
