LEA HANG ON FOR DERBY WIN

Posted by Roy Gill at Aug 20, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

EAST REGION NORTH LEAGUE

MONTROSE ROSELEA V BRECHIN VICS

SAT AUGUST 21ST 2010

Roselea kicked off their return to the North League with a home match v Brechin Vics. They had a chance for early revenge as their local rivals had managed to beat them in the DJ Laing Cup two weeks previous which was their first win for 15 years.

Roselea had given up their hold on the DJ Laing Cup finishing a disappointing bottom of their Group and after relegation they knew that a good start would be important to get things off to a good start.

David Craig came back into contention following injury and Colin Kennedy also returned after a stint working abroad.

Roselea line up: Mcleod, Miller, Mustard, Graham, Whyte, Hood, Rae, Reoch, Reid, Watson & Riach. Subs: Strachan, David Craig, Aitken, Barclay, Doug Craig & Brand.

On a good surface and a strong wind Brechin Vics had the first chance in 4 minutes when McNaughton broke free after Roselea claimed for a foul by Longmuir on Graham but Mcleod stood his ground and saved well. Longmuir then had a half chance after an early ball from Archibald caught Roselea flat footed however the ex Roselea man could not get enough on the ball to trouble Mcleod.

Roselea then took the lead on the 10th minute. A Reoch flick on was played to Hood by Watson then Hood cut back to Riach and despite a poor first touch he managed to stretch and squeeze the ball past Robbie to make it 1-0.

In 13 minutes Longmuir should have done better with a headed effort but could not direct it goalwards.

Watson then had a header from a great Reid cross which Robbie spilled and with Riach following up the visiting keeper did well to turn it away for a corner. Roselea had a big appeal for a penalty in 22 minutes when a Watson shot struck the hand of Paul Ross but the referee never gave it the time of day. Robbie had the save of the day in 26 minutes when Reoch hit a rasping left foot shot right down the middle and somehow he managed to turn it away for corner. Reid had a shot go just over from the loose ball of the resulting corner. Roselea were on top at this stage and a fine move involving Reoch, Rae and Watson saw the latter crossing with Riach just failing to get a touch in front of Robbie. Hood sent another cross in just before half time and although Watson got plenty of contact with his head the end result was off target.

HALF TIME: Roselea 1 Brechin Vics 0.

Brechin Vics came out with some purpose in the second half and McNaughton broke away and looked to have levelled the scores but the ball bounced narrowly wide with the away support celebrating a goal. In 49 minutes Longmuir then though he had equalised when he had the ball in the net but was ruled offside.

In 55 minutes Watson went on a long solo run and ended up burrowing along the goal line before drilling a low cross to the near post with Riach again waiting to pounce as Robbie held again.

Brechin Vics were taking advantage of some slack Roselea play and both McNaughton and Longmuir both had chances to equalise however some stout defending from Roselea kept them at bay.

Roselea made three changes in the 2nd half with Doug Craig, Kennedy & Strachan replacing Miller, Riach and Reid.

Archibald had a speculative effort from 25 yards and Mcleod needed two attempts to turn it round for a corner.

Another long ball caught the Roselea defence flat and McNaughton was about to pull the trigger when Mustard got back to make an excellent blocking tackle.

FULL TIME; Roselea 1 Brechin Vics 0

Roselea will see this as a welcome three points after a rather inept performance. Brechin Vics will look at the chances they created but will have to reflect back to the League Cup encounter to see how frustrating it can be when you don’t take your chances.

Match Sponsor was Archbold Accountancy Ltd

Roselea now face a tricky League match at Lochee Harp on Sat August 28th, 2.30pm. Harp started with a 2-1 defeat at Violet on their opening day.

ALL SQUARE AS VICS PROGRESS TO SEMI FINAL

ARBROATH VICS v MONTROSE ROSELEA

DJ LAING LEAGUE CUP SECTION MATCH

SAT AUG 14th 2010

Roselea travelled down the coast to Ogilvy Park, Arbroath to face the local Vics. The Section was all but won by their opponents following their wins against ASC and Brechin Vics whilst Roselea were merely playing for pride. Only a massive loss for the home side and a big Brechin Vics win would see them losing out on a Semi Final place. Roselea had the following weeks opening League fixture against Brechin Vics to build towards.

Both teams had familiar faces in their ranks facing their former sides. Craig Anderson was in the Vics side having had a season out in the wilderness after his move to Tayport and Craig Watson was facing his old side playing for Roselea, having bagged the Player of the Year trophy from the Arbroath club the previous week for his 30 goal season.

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Miller, Mustard, Whyte, Graham, Rae, Urquhart, Hood, Watson & Reid Subs: Brand, Aitken, Strachan Barclay, David Craig & Doug Craig.

On a blistering hot day the pitch was in as good a condition as it has for many years. Arbroath Vics kicked off and referee Thomson almost had to book Rae for a late challenge on ex team mate Anderson within seconds of the kick off. Mustard was unlucky to pick up a booking in 3 minutes for his first challenge.

Watson then goes on a great run down the right in two minutes and he just delayed his cutback with two waiting in the middle and the ball was turned behind for a corner. Hood then broke on the right and his cross came back of the bar to the head of Reid but he couldn’t get enough power behind header to worry Cargill.

In 10 minutes Whyte of Roselea had to throw himself at the ball to stop Jones scoring from a Warren cutback.

Roselea had the next chance in 12 minutes when Hood flicked onto Watson and his lob was well held by Cargill who had stood his ground.

Roseleas persistency finally paid off in 16 minutes when a long Miller free kick was chipped forward by Urquhart and HOOD chipped the ball home from 16 yards.

In 20 minutes Reid who was having a great game for Roselea worked his way down the left before sending in a great cross which Watson headed just wide.

Warren had a great dipping volley go just over for Vics in 23 minutes.

On the half hour Mustard fouled Kevin Durno just over the halfway line with the home side shouting for another card. Durno got up and shouldered the Roselea midfielder and received a yellow card.Sensibly the Roselea Management team removed Mustard from play and Riach replaced him.

Reoch then received a yellow card for dissent. The half was seen out with little chances made by either side but there was no lack of effort or football being played.

HT Arbroath Vics 0 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea opened the second half brightly and Reoch had a 30 yard shot just go wide of the upright in 47 minutes.

In 49 minutes Arbroath Vics equalised and it was Anderson who bit the hand that fed him. Jones did well on the right hand side to get the better of Whyte and send in a great cross which the ex Roselea man did well to head home from 7 yards. His badge kissing celebration was not quite so welcome in the visitor’s dugout.

Roselea almost got back in front a minute later when Rae’s corner was headed just wide by dangerman Watson as he made a run from back to front post.

Sub Riach had to leave the field in 67 minutes when he received a cut to his head and was replaced by Barclay.

Watson was a danger to the Vics and he latched onto a Rae header and shot just wide of the top corner. Strachan replaced Reid in 70 minutes. Reid having an excellent debut for the club.

With 7 minutes to go Arbroath took the lead with what looked like the winner. A moment of indecision saw the ball bounce in the box leaving Mcleod in no mans land, JONES kept his composure after rounding the keeper and slotted home from a tight angle.

Roselea had two free kicks in succession from a dangerous area and from the second one Gove received his second yellow and his marching orders.

In 87 minutes Roselea got the goal which their play merited and the script was completed when WATSON bore into the box before striking through the ball from an 8 yard angle giving Cargill no chance.

There were a couple of minutes of injury time to be played but neither team could create a chance and Arbroath Vics took their deserved place in the Semi Finals having topped the group with 7 points.

FT Arbroath Vics 2 Roselea 2

A fair scoreline with Roselea having been on top in the first half and Vics probably shading the second half. Roselea can now put the League Cup behind them and look to get their League Campaign off to a flyer.

Roselea head into next week with another local derby when Brechin Vics visit Broomfield for the first North League match. Roselea will be looking for revenge for the painful League Cup defeat which cost them so dearly in their quest to retain the trophy from last season. The match on August 21st kicks of at 2.30pm.

Roselea are holding their second Ladies Dinner on Saturday Sept 25th at the Links Hotel with guest speakers, Roger Brunton MC. Patrice & Joyce Falconer.(Roisin from River City). BRECHIN VICS TAKE DERBY GLORY

Posted by Roy Gill at Aug 7, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

DJ Laing League Cup Holders Montrose Roselea made the short journey to Victoria Park Brechin to start their bid to retain the trophy.

After a reasonably successful pre season build up the expectations were high. Injuries to David Craig, Colin Page and Mark Fotherhingham meant that the selection options were limited. Victoria Park was in excellent condition and it was a hot summer evening as the teams took to the pitch.

Roselea: Mcleod, Miller, Doug Craig, Whyte, Graham, Reoch, Rae, Mustard, Strachan, Hood & Watson. Subs: McKellar, Aitken, Riach, Brand, Urquhart & Mitchell.

Roselea took the game to Brechin Vics in the early stages and Robbie in the home goal had to be alert to tip over a Hood header. Watson and Hood both went close again. Strachan sent in some great crosses and corners but Robbie was again in great form and managed to deal with them.

McNaught broke free for Brechin Vics but Mcleod stood his ground and had an excellent save.

Hood then had a great strike which hit the underside of the cross bar and bouncing on the line before the ball was scrambled clear.

In 31 minutes Vics took the lead against the run of play. McNaught again played on the shoulder of the Roselea defence and finished well lobbing the ball over Mcleod and into the net.

Roselea again piled on the pressure and had several chances with Whytes header from point blank range being the pick of them.

Half Time: Brechin Vics 1 Roselea 0

Roselea started the second half looking for the vital goal to start their revival but found a stubborn Brechin defence who did not want to lose anything.

Vics further shocked their opponents when a poorly struck Craig free kick found its way to Mcnaught in 51 minutes and again the striker finished well past the advancing Mcleod.

Roselea were rattled but it spurred them into action and Watson went close with a stabbed effort from short range. Hood finally got the goal Roselea’s play merited as he managed to powerfully header a McKellar cross into the net. Roselea huffed and puffed and created plenty of chances but could not find a way past the Vics rearguard who also rode their luck at times.

Fyfe almost added a third for the home side as he found himself in plenty of space with Roselea pressing for the equaliser but he lobbed the ball just wide of the post.

Final Score: Brechin Vics 2 Roselea 1

Brechin Vics thoroughly deserved their win as they fought hard and looked to have more desire than their visitors. Roselea had enough chances to win several games especially in the early stages and that is what cost them the match. This was Vics first win over Roselea in nearly fifteen years and a difficult one to take.
