ROSELEA RYDER CUP 2010

Mennie in Full flow

Unfortunately or perhaps the opposite Montrose Medal Golf Course was not blessed with Golf from Mr Mennie due to a double booking.

Captains Poised

There were some awsome tussles as the Roselea Ryder Cup (see photo at bottom of this page) was battled out by Rookie Captains Dean Milne Captain of the Club side against Kevin Young of the Golf Inn team. There were the usual scores to settle and there were too many close ties and ebbs and flows as happens on the day. It was great to see so many former players of the club taking part. The players were treated to some award winning speeches after the match in the comforts of the Golf Inn.

The final score of 14-11 to Team Milne means that the Ron Mitchell Trophy will stay in the club hands for another year and Organiser Derek Muir is already working on plans to move the event to an away venue next year.

The Scores:

1 Ross Coull Beat Bill Taylor 0
Dean Milne Beat Kes Young
Derek Muir Lost to Chris Masson
Pairs :- Game halved

BONESS HOLD ON FOR WIN

Posted by Roy Gill at Sep 10, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v BONESS UTD

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 1st ROUND

SAT SEPT 11 2010

Roselea faced a stiff test with Super League Title Holders Boness Utd on cup duty at Broomfield Park. The sides met in season 2009/10 with the visitors leaving with a victory in a Scottish Cup tie by 3-2.  After a dry spell the overnight rain saw that the pitch was in excellent condition and the match started in very calm weather.

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Whyte, Graham, David Craig, Reoach, Rae, Kennedy, Reid, Watson & Hood. Subs: Brand, Doug Craig, Riach, Miller, Barclay, Strachan, Urquhart.

Roselea took the lead against Boness in the first minute in 2009 but the roles were reversed when Boness took the lead in the third minute. Snowden was allowed too much time on the ball after Reid had lost possession and his cross was finally turned home by SHIRRA after a scramble in the box.

In 13 minutes the slick passing Boness side looked to be on easy street when they doubled their advantage. Snowden picked the ball up on the right hand side again after Roselea lost possession through Craig and another great cross was flicked home by LOVE.

Roselea were struggling to get near the Boness players and eventually the ball broke to Hamilton who had a speculative shot from 25 yards go just over on 16 minutes.

In 24 minutes Roselea had their first real chance when Hood did well to set Kennedy for a cross and Watson headed just over whilst receiving a head knock at the same time. Fraser had a pot shot for Boness a minute later and Mcleod had to scramble his second save off the line after the rasping first effort deceived him in the wind. Calum Rae had a great run for Roselea and beat three players before laying to Watson who struck from 25 yards but Ewing in the visitor’s goals was not troubled by it.

Boness Utd broke again in 41 minutes with Shirra and Fraser passing their way through the Roselea midfield again. This time McFadyen went just wide with a shot.

Half Time: Roselea 0 Boness Utd 2

Boness kicked off the second half with an ever-strengthening wind behind as Roselea looked to pull something out of the hat to give them a much needed life-line in the game. Boness were the first to attack as they continued where they had left off in the first half. Ewan Graham had to be alert to clear at the far post and McLeod held the resulting corner well.

Roselea then had a great chance to draw first blood in the second half in 55 minutes. Kennedy played the ball into the chest of Watson who found Hood and his shot was well saved by Ewing’s feet before the ball was scrambled away. Hood required treatment before resuming play.

Roselea were looking more of a threat despite Boness continued dominance in midfield and they finally got the break in 59 minutes with a goal. Watson broke free with Boness claiming for a foul, he sent in an early curling shot which Ewan beat out to Hood and again he saved the rebound before the ball broke to WATSON who followed up to score from close range.

Boness looked rattled and a minute later Watson flicked on and Whyte struck a great volley which Ewing had to turn round for a corner. Jordan Reoch almost got his head to the corner and Boness cleared.

In 64 minutes Reoch was booked when it appeared that McFadyen looked as if he had gone over the ball. Fleming sent in a dangerous swerving free kick and Roselea’s defence had to block two shots before the danger was cleared.

Miller, Riach and Barclay replaced Craig, Watson and Reid at various points in the second half.

Fraser of Boness received his marching orders in 76 minutes for an off the ball incident.

Roselea did seem to have the upperhand on their visitors for the rest of the match as they looked slightly rattled but the Lothians side had too much left in the bag to surrender lightly and held out for the win.

Final Score: Roselea 1 Boness Utd 2

After a very slow start against a very classy Boness side Roselea finally dragged themselves back into the game. The midfield duo of Shirra and Fraser ran the show for the visitors and made it difficult for the home team to get any pattern to their play.Credit to the Roselea team for not backing down and they gave the Super League holders a few scares in the second half.

Man of the Match was Lee Hood who was chosen by the Sponsors MGFA and Gordon Allan.

Roselea now head back to League action with a trip back to Ogilvy Park on Sat Sept 18th where the teams drew 2-2 in the League Cup section matches. Roselea will want to keep their 100% record up but will face an ever improving Vics side. The match kicks off at 2.30pm

Roselea have the following home games available for Match Hospitality: Coupar Angus (Sept 25th), Forfar Albion (Oct 2nd) and Luncarty (Oct 16th). Please contact Roy Gill on 07908 763219

ROSELEA HIT CRAIGIE FOR SIX

Posted by Roy Gill at Sep 3, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v EAST CRAIGIE

SAT SEPT 4th 2010

EAST REGIONS SJFA NORTH DIVISION

Roselea hosted Dundee East Craigie in their third  League match of the season having recorded wins against Lochee Harp and Brechin Vics whilst scoring 3 and conceding nil in the process. A superb display in a midweek friendly against Forfar Athletic at Station Park gave optimism that things we starting to happen with the side. An interested spectator was former Grade One referee Mike Pocock who was present to supervise match referee William Ferguson. Pocock refereed a Roselea Scottish Cup tie in 1987 against Auchinleck Talbot at Links Park which Roselea lost 5-2. Infamously he sent off brothers Brian and Steve Aitken during the first half of the match. Roselea of course have Steves son Joe in their side now.

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Whyte, Graham, Urquhart, Reoch, Rae, Doug Craig, Strachan, Riach & Hood. Subs: Miller, David Craig, Reid, Aitken, Kennedy, McKellar & Brand.

Roselea kicked off facing a breeze on what was a warm and at times sunny day. Roselea didnt have to wait long for the opening goal which came courtesy of a WHYTE header from a Doug Craig free kick in 2 minutes. Roselea doubled their lead in 4 minutes to leave Craigie shell shocked. A corner was cleared as far as Ryan STRACHAN who volleyed home from 20 yards giving Harris in the visitors goal no chance.

In 11 minutes Chalmers was allowed to advance into the Roselea half from the left back area and his left foot shot although well hit was off target.

Roselea were on top and took a 3-0 lead in 25 minutes. Strachans initial shot was blocked and fell to RAE 25 yards out and his volley into the top corner was unstoppable.

In 30 minutes David Craig made a welcome return to the side replacing the unlucky Urquhart who picked up a knock.

West broke for Craigie and almost got on the end of a one-two on the edge of the Roselea box but Doug Craig read the situation and cleared.

Ryan Strachan sent in a vicous cross in 39 minutes and although Hood did well to steer goalwards Harris was well positioned to hold.

Half Time: Roselea 3 East Craigie 0

East Craigie were almost give a life line in the 50th minute when Graham was caught in possesion and Welsh broke clear only for Mcleod to save his shot.

Roselea were being patient and had loads of possesion. Rae had a shot from distance that Harris needed two attempts to get under control.

Roselea took a four goal lead with a fantastic goal in 58 minutes. Doug Craig found Reoch with a 50 yard cross field pass, Reoch laid the ball back to Mustard and his first time deep cross was met by a Hood diving header and although Harris did well to stop it WHYTE was well placed to follow up from close range.

In 63 minutes Gavin Reid replaced the tiring Doug Craig.

In 68 Minutes Wilson who had just been booked for a stamp on Hood received his marching orders after again bringing down Hood on the edge of the box. Strachans free kick managed to find the heart of the Craigie wall.

Joe Aitken replaced Lee Hood in 72 minutes.

Whyte went on a run and chipped the ball to Rae in the box and Riach should have done better from the cushioned header.

Aitken won a penalty for Roselea after being brought down in the box with no arguments from the Craigie side. Paul WHYTE was allowed to take the kick to complete his hat trick and did so in style thumping the ball high into the postage stamp corner.

Aitken won a second penalty right on time this time being brutally brought down by hay who could have no arguments. This time normal spot kick taker Ewan GRAHAM stepped up and although Harris got a hand to it he managed to score.

Final Score: Montrose Roselea 6 East Craigie 0

Although East Craigie looked flat after their poor opening Roselea still had to go out and do the business and they did. Another clean sheet means 270 minutes without losing a goal. The win takes them to the top of the table equal on poinst with Dundee Violet. Roselea now get a weeks break from League action when Super League Title holders Boness Utd come to Broomfield Park for an East of Scotland 1st Round cup tie on Saturday Sept 11th. The match kicks off at 2.30pm. Boness visited Montrose in Oct 2009 in a Scottish Cup tie and ran out 3-2 winners.

LEA COMFORTABLE AT BEECHWOOD

Posted by Roy Gill at Aug 27, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LOCHEE HARP v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT AUG 28th 2010

Roselea travelled to Beechwood Park to face Lochee Utd in their second League match of the season. Looking to build on their opening day victory over Brechin Vics Manager Brand made a couple of changes with Urquhart & Strachan replacing Miller & Hood in the starting line up. Beechwood Park was surprisingly heavy and there was a good covering of grass although long in places.

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Whyte, Graham, Reid, Reoch, Rae, Urquhart, Strachan, Watson & Riach. Subs: David Craig, Barclay, Kennedy, Miller, Brand & Hood.

Roselea were awarded a free kick in 3 minutes when Riach was bundled to the ground but Grahams free kick was off range.

Lochee Harp won the first of several corners they had in the first half in 10 minutes and a dangerous ball went across the face of the Roselea goal with Mcleod failing to connect.

Sean Mustard sent Riach away in 15 minutes but he took the ball to wide and could not direct his shot on goal.

Play was being bogged down in the middle of the park but Watson got the next chance in 24 minutes but was again off target. Watson had another chance in 34 minutes when he flicked a ball on but it was knocked back out to him and McPherson was well placed to deal with the big strikers shot.

Reoch sent in a dangerous cross in 41 minutes and the Harp defence had to be alert to clear the danger. Lochee Harp had a penalty claim on 42 minutes when Lees rounded Mcleod and went down but the referee could see no wrong in the challenge. Right on half time Roselea had the closing chance when Watson flicked a ball cleverly back with Reoch just waiting to pounce.

Half Time: Lochee Harp 0 Roselea 0

Roselea started the second half with Kennedy on for Reid as the Manager changed the formation to try and exert some pressure on the homesters.

Lochee Harp should have done better with the first chance of the half in 50 minutes. Riach under pressure gave the ball away to Williamson who weaved his way into the box and his chipped shot should have been more troublesome to Mcleod but it was cleared from the byeline.

Roselea took a deserved lead in 56 minutes that their play merited.  Watson flicked a throw on to Reoch and his perfectly weighted cross was met by the head of Riach who strongly headed past Mcpherson for a great goal.

In 70 minutes Aitken replaced Strachan for Roselea.

Riach of Roselea and Williamson of Harp both had chances but again the killer touch was lacking in front of goal. Hood replaced Riach in 75 minutes and quickly picked up a booking for a late tackle.

Hood broke away in the 90th minute and after delaying a great chance to shoot he cut back again to create an opening which saw his shot hit the base of the post and come back out with McPherson also getting a touch on it.  As Roselea looked to run down the 5 minutes of injury time Watson broke clear of the Harp defence before slotting a very calm finish past McPherson and secured the points for the Lea.

Full Time: Lochee Harp 0 Montrose Roselea 2

Roselea thoroughly deserved this win and were patient enough to wait for the breaks to come. The defence get top marks for showing great desire in winning their battles and not wanting to give anything away. They gave Mcleod in the Roselea goal little to do apart from handling some crosses very well. Harp were hard to break down and the surface did not help and encourage good football to be played.

This Saturday Roselea are at home to East Craigie in their third League match with a 2.30pm kick off. There is still some Hospitality places available for the Boness Utd Cup tie on Saturday Sept 11th. Please contact Roy Gill on 07908763219 for more details.

Sunday Sept 5th will see the DundeeUtd Legends visit Broomfield for Matt Miller & Colin Pages Testimonial which kicks off at 3pm. Entry is by cash at turnstiles with £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. The proceeds will be donated to the Rhys Allan Trust.
