BLAIRGOWRIE JFC v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT APRIL 23rd 2011

Roselea headed to old foes Blairgowrie in search of a win to keep them in the Title race following last Saturdays defeat to Violet. With Downfield one point ahead a win was a must to keep the pressure on. Paul Whyte joined Callum Rae on the sidelines with an ankle knock and Craig Watson was unavailable due to work commitments.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Reid, Mustard, Reoch, Kennedy, David Craig, Fotheringham, Hood, Urquhart & Collier. Subs Miller, Aitken, Riach, Strachan, Brand & Craig

The weatherman was spot on as heavy rain began to fall however it did help to moisten a very hard and bumpy surface.

Roselea started the game well and Fotheringham had a left footed shot from the edge of the box that went just wide of the post in 5 minutes.

Blairgowrie were playing a high line in an attempt to catch Roselea offside and Hood broke this in 10 minutes but his cross was cut out by the Blair keeper. Roselea forced the first save of the match when a Collier flick on was played back to Urquhart by Kennedy and his shot was turned behind for a corner.

Blairgowrie broke in 13 minutes and Axworthys cross had to be turned behind for a corner by Craig with a striker waiting to pounce.

Blairgowrie had the next chance and almost took the lead in 26 minutes. Ross Mcleod was expecting a free kick to be floated into the box but was surprised when a shot came in and he managed to scramble and push the ball onto the bar before it was cleared to safety.

Urquhart was booked for kicking the ball away in 36 minutes.

Brash went close with a header for Blair but Mcleod held well. Four mintues later Mcleod had to deal with two dangerous Blairgowrie corners by punching them away.

Half Time: Blairgowrie 0 Montrose Roselea 0

Roselea started the second half with Ryan Strachan on for Robert Urquhart who was on a booking and removed as a precaution.

Brash got his head to another corner in 46 minutes but again Mcleod was equal to the task.

Roselea almost took the lead when Hood surprised everyone when he cut inside and sent a 30 yard shot just over the bar from a difficult position. Roselea were looking hungry and Collier won a free kick on the right hand side about 6 feet from the touchline. Strachan sent in a deep inswinging ball which Colquhoun got his head to and somehow the ball stayed out after a combination of the post, the keeper and a defender managed to scramble it clear. In 57 minutes

Blairgowrie had the ball in the net but Duncan was ruled offside when he picked up Brash’s flick on.

Mark Fotheringham connected with a Mcleod clearance in 63 minutes but the home keeper got his foot to the ball and cleared. A minute later Fotheringham then broke the offside trap again and found himself one on one with the keeper who pulled off an excellent save as he tried to round him.

Roselea were on top and it seemed like only a matter of time before they scored. Next to try was Kennedy who broke clear on the right and despite an excellent first touch with his chest he elected to shoot high into the near post when a cross goal effort may have reaped better rewards. In 70 minutes Kennedy again broke on the right and cut the ball back to Hood but his left foot shot was to weak to trouble the keeper.

Blairgowrie had a chance in 77 minutes when their substitute latched on to a long ball but Mcleod got down well to save. In 80 minutes the hard working Collier won a ball in the left hand corner and after drawing the keeper he hit his shot into the side netting when it looked sure to go in. Kennedy was then one on one with the Keeper again but again he was thwarted by the home number one. A minute later Kennedy was in again and this time managed to get past the keeper but ran the ball out of play.

Roselea were well on top as they searched for the all important breakthrough. In 84 minutes Aitken again sprung the offside trap but he hit his shot straight at the advancing keeper. In 87 minutes with Roselea pushing the Blair sub should have scored but elected to back heel to find a team-mate only to find Lea defender Reoch who cleared. The ball fell to Hood at the other end and he cut in and his miss hit cross appeared to catch the keeper out but he somehow managed to get back and tip the ball over the bar.

In 89 minutes Collier collected  a throw in before turning his marker and his goalbound left foot shot was tipped over by the brilliant home keeper.

Final Score: Blairgowrie 0 Montrose Roselea 0

This was an infuriating day for Roselea who deserved more out of the game than the scoreline suggests. A combination of great goalkeeping, bad finishing and bad luck frustrated them. Most suprising thing was Blairgowries tactic of playing offside, which certainly did not work and they did nothing to change matters. With the three other sides all winning this makes Roselea’s chances of winning the League much slimmer. Next up will be the visit of ASC to Broomfield on Weds April 27th  (KO 6.45)followed by a crunch match away to North End on Saturday April 30th KO 2.30pm

MONTROSE ROSELEA v DUNDEE VIOLET

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT APRIL 9th 2011

Roselea faced Dundee Violet at Broomfield Park on Saturday as the race for the North Division Title hots up. Following Roselea’s draw at Kirriemuir last Saturday, Downfield leapfrogged Roselea into top spot by a point with the Montrose team having a game in hand. Violet were six behind Roselea with the same games played and Dundee North End a further eight points behind with 3 games in hand. Roselea were still without midfielder Calum Rae who is still out with an injured ankle however Colin Kennedy recovered from injury to make the starting line up.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Whyte, Mustard, Reoch, Urquhart, Kennedy, Fotheringham, Strachan, Collier & Watson. Subs: Aitken, Reid, Riach, Miller, David Craig, Hood & Brand.

On a crisp spring day the game kicked off with a chilly breeze cutting into the air. Violet had the first chance in 5 minutes when Sievewright latched onto a long ball and Mcleod had to be alert enough to close the angle and save at his feet.

Roselea hit back and a wonderful piece of skill by Watson saw him swivel and strike a great shot from 30 yards the only part missing was the end result of the ball nestling in the top corner as it flew inches wide. Watson went close again in spectacular style in 13 minutes this time from a bicycle kick which was turned away by Stewart.

Roselea had the ball in the net in 18 minutes however it was chalked off with Watson being in an offside position.

Violet had the next move of note in 23 minutes. Milton broke on the right and cut back to Hood but he shot well wide from distance.

The game was swinging from end to end and a minutes later Strachan broke on the left for Roselea sending a deep cross in which Collier attacked, Watson had a stab at it before it broke to Fotheringham who shot wide.

Violet had a penalty claim in 25 minutes and then the ball broke out Lunan shot high and wide.

Fotheringham was fouled 10 yards inside the Violet half in 34 minutes and Whytes quick free kick was well connected by Colquhoun but was too high to trouble Stewart.

With Roselea looking the more likely side to score Violet took the lead on 40 minutes. Milton charged down the Roselea left hand side and his perfect cross was headed in off the far post by Ross LUNAN.

There was no further action and the referee concluded a disappointing half for Roselea after a good performance.

Half Time: Roselea 0 Violet 1

Roselea started the second half with a view to getting back on terms and Watsons long range shot was not far off target on 47 minutes.

Violet had a good move in 51 minutes which again saw Milton tear down the line but his team-mate could not make enough contact to direct the ball goalwards. Violet had a better chance in 55 minutes when Hood flicked on for Kadela to have a shot which Mcleod had to make sure he held with Lunan waiting to pounce.

Roselea had another strike at goal in 64 minutes when Collier met a flick on but it was straight at Stewart who held well.

Violet had a claim that the ball crossed the line a minute later when a dangerous corner was cleared off the line by Kennedy.

In 65 minutes Hood replaced Strachan as Roselea looked for the spark to get back in the game. A square Kennedy free kick was again well met by Colquhoun in 68 minutes but was just wide although well struck.

Aitken was sent on for Watson with 8 minutes to go.

The last chance of the game came in the 83rd minute for Violet when Kadela broke down the left and Jordan Reoch did well to get his foot to the ball in front of Lunan. There were three added minutes for Roselea to try and snatch a draw and also time for the third sub with Miller replacing the injured Whyte.

Final Score: Montrose Roselea 0 Dundee Violet 1

Referee: G Bowman

Disappointment for Roselea who did not play badly however from an early stage it looked like the kind of match which would be settled by the first goal. The result drags Violet right back into the reckoning and with Downfield also losing by a single goal to North End the result is not the end of the world for Roselea’s Title hopes. North End also play Violet on Weds 20th.  Roselea’s next game is another tough one away to Blairgowrie on Sat April 23rd which Kicks Off at 2.30pm.  Match Sponsor Alan & Ann Reoch awarded Ross Colquhoun with his Man of the Match award.

KIRRIE THISTLE v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT APR 9th 2011

Roselea travelled to Westview Park Kirriemuir to face the local Thistle side. The Lea had picked up their form after the defeat to Downfield in early March winning their last 4 games away from home to haul themselves back up to the top of the League. With 7 difficult games remaining every match is going to be a Cup Final. They entered the game with Robert Urquhart and Sean Mustard unavailable along with long term absentees Ewan Graham & Colin Page.On a bright sunny day in Kirriemuir Roselea kicked off on a firm pitch which was slightly bobbly.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Whyte, Doug Craig,Reoch, Kennedy, Strachan, Collier, Watson, Aitken &Riach. Subs Miller, Fotheringham, Reid, Hood, Craig, Rae & Brand.

Roselea got off to a dream start with two goals in the opening eight minutes. In 4 minutes a Reoch free kick was deflected into the path of Scott RIACH and he slotted home from close range. In 8 minutes it was 2-0 to the visitors as they continued their flying start. This time a long ball put Craig WATSON in and he slotted past the keeper from a tight angle.

16 minutes in and Kirrie pulled themselves back into the game after a defensive mix up between Mcleod &Whyte allowed MILLAR to nip inbetween and roll home into an empty goal.

Roselea had a good spell of pressure and forced a string of corners and it was from the fourth one they extended their lead. Colin Kennedy’s deep corner was headed back across goal by Whyte and WATSON bulleted a header in off the crossbar from close range in 26 minutes.

On the half hour mark Strachan intercepted a slack McKenna pass and found Aitken at the back post but he could not get enough on his shot to trouble home keeper Hutchison.

Once again Kirrie hauled themselves back into the game this time courtesy of a soft penalty award in 31 minutes. TAYLOR was brought down by Colquhoun and although Mcleod got his hand to the spot kick he could not prevent the ball crossing the line to make it 3-2.

Kirrie were now searching for the equaliser and Mcleod had to watch carefully as Casey threw in a cross which just missed the cross bar. Roselea had to survive a scramble in the box and then Kirrie had to deal with another scramble at the other in end following a Roselea corner in 35 minutes.

On 40 minutes Watson broke strongly and after getting his shot away the referee pulled play back for a foul. Kennedy took the kick but it was high of the target. Watson again broke free after another Mckenna error and this time he forced a good save from Hutchison who turned it round the post.

Half Time Kirrie Thistle 2 Montrose Roselea 3

Roselea opened the second half strongly and a McKenna back header was intercepted by Watson however his first touch was too strong and Hutchison gathered.

Aitken had another chance in 50 minutes when another mix up saw him win possession in the wide area and he tried to round the keeper when he may have been better shooting from a tight angle.

Colin Kennedy picked up and injury and was replaced by David Craig in 58 minutes.

On 68 minutes Watson and Aitken combined well and Aitken managed to get in a great left foot shot which was saved for a corner.

Kirrie seemed to get on top after Roselea lost their shape following Kennedys withdrawal and their pressure paid off in 75 minutes. A cross from the left and Mcleod dived only to punch the ball off Paul Whyte only for it to land to sub RUSSELL who finished from close range.

Hood replaced Strachan for Roselea in 78 minutes.

Three minutes later Roselea were caught square at the back and Millar was in but his shot was saved brilliantly by Mcleod. Kirrie had three further chances before the end with one free kick hitting the outside of the post. Watson had a free kick turned round the post at the other end and the game fizzled out to a draw.

Final Score: Kirrie Thistle 3 Montrose Roselea 3

Roselea seemed to have control of this game but three bits of soft defending ultimately cost them the points. With Downfield winning at Coupar Angus they leapfrog Roselea and sit in first spot by a point although Roselea still have a game in hand. Fellow challengers North End and Violet had cup games and will take heart from the fact that Roselea dropped two points.

Roselea now face Violet at home on Saturday 16th April KO 2.30pm. There are still some Hospitality places available please contact Roy Gill on 07908 763219

ROSELEA BACK ON TOP AFTER DERBY WIN

BRECHIN VICS V MONTROSEROSELEA

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT APRIL 2nd 2011

With the race for the North Division hotting up and no less than 8 of the 12 teams in with a realistic chance of winning it, Roselea travelled to Victoria Park to face local rivals Brechin Vics. Roselea sat one point behind current leaders Downfield with a game in hand. Roselea were light in numbers with Paul Whyte, James Collier, Ewan Graham & David Craig unavailable, Calum Rae as injured although he made the bench and Colin Page is still out long term injured.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Doug Craig, Mustard, Reoch, Kennedy, Strachan, Fotheringham, Urquhart, Watson & Aitken. Subs: Reid, Miller, Riach, Hood & Rae

After a dismal morning the sun was out however Victoria Park was heavy underfoot although it had a good covering of grass.

The opening five minutes were a bit sticky and it was Roselea who finally created something after 5 minutes. Strachan had an excellent tackle on Crowe before sending in a cross which was too close to Robbie in the Vics goal. Roles were reversed a minute later when this time Strachan lost out to Crowe who put in a dangerous cross which Mcnaughton should have done better with and headed wide with Mcleod caught out.

Joe Aitken sent Ryan Strachan down the wing in ten minutes and his deep cross was met by Watson at the back post but the big striker could not hit the target. In 13 minutes Roselea had a free kick in a dangerous area after Urquhart was scythed down however Colquhoun blasted over.

Roselea had a let off in 18 minutes when Fotheringham had to do his job on the post after a header from a corner was goalbound. He managed to fling himself at the ball and head clear in acrobatic fashion.

Play was swinging from end to end and the first five minutes excepted Brechin Vics were putting in some very heavy challenges. Crowe of Vics picked up a booking.

Brechin Vics were a threat and McNaughton set up Ross for a shot but he did not get enough power to trouble Mcleod in 32 minutes.

Vics had a couple of chances just before half time with a Ross header and a penalty claim turned down after a challenge on the same player. Referee McIllvenny was not interested and correctly awarded a corner.

Vics then had another couple of chances in stoppage time with Mcleod missing a corner claiming for a foul which was not given and Mcnaughton blasted over from close range.

Half Time: Brechin Vics 0 Montrose Roselea 0

Roselea started the half brightly with their Managers “words” of wisdom still ringing in their ears and Mustard just failed to get a good connection on a great Strachan cross. In 48 minutes Roselea got the all important first goal. A long ball from Reoch was flicked on by Watson and when Crowe missed the ball STRACHAN found himself in on goal and shot low and hard from 16 yards to give the visitors the lead.

Vics came back into it and McNaughton shot into the near post then he had a close range header saved at the feet of Ross Mcleod.

In 55 minutes Watson broke through for Roselea and although he held off the Vics defender on his tail he lost his footing as he shot and the ball went over the top of the goals.

Roselea increased their lead in 60 minutes when Aitken outstripped the Vics defence and cut across the last defender who could only trip him as he entered the box and a penalty was awarded. Craig WATSON stepped up a coolly finished sending Robbie the wrong way from the kick.

Urquhart went close in 68 minutes when he came out best in a hard tackle and his chip was cleared off the line by Easton.

Brechin Vics had another half chance in 74 minutes when Mcnaughtons overhead kick went just wide of the post. Roselea made three subs as the game petered out with Hood on for Watson in 75, Reid replacing Strachan on 80 minutes and Riach on for Aitken in 85.

Hood created a couple of chances in the closing minutes with some great footwork. He cut in and had a shot which Robbie saved then a minute later he set up Riach for a knock in but he stretched and the ball went high over the bar.

Final Score: Brechin Vics 0 Montrose Roselea 2

This was a very tough match for Roselea and it wasn’t until the goals came that the points looked safe. Up against a very robust Vics side they did show patience and it was a professional performance. With Dundee Violet and Downfield drawing 0-0 Roselea leapfrogged Downfield to top the table and have a game in hand. North End were getting beat 2-1 at Harp when the match was abandoned by the referee with 12 minutes remaining. The Region Management will have to decide the outcome of that match. North End remain 7 points behind Roselea with 2 games in hand.Roselea now head to Kirrie Thistle on Sat April 9th for their 4th away game on the trot. The remaining 6 games consist of three at home and three away.
