LOCHEE HARP v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 1st ROUND

SAT Sept 17th 2011

Roselea fresh from their free week and Ryder Cup festivities travelled to Beechwood Park, Lochee to face the local Harp. Over the years Roselea have had their fair success over the home team on League business however when it came to Cup games Harp have had the upper hand.

Roselea travelled with almost a full pool following the holiday period and a few changes were also thrown in to the equation as the Management team picked their eleven and seven subs.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, R Taylor, Rae, Riach, Mustard, Urquhart, Anderson, P Taylor, Fletcher, Kennedy. Subs: Collier, Riach’ Whyte’ Aitken, Strachan, Rodger & Doug Craig.

On a decent surface which was flat and moist from the overnight rain Harp were first to threaten. A well worked corner saw the ball played to the edge of the box but Mcleod saved well from Taylor for the home side.

Roselea take the lead in 8 minutes having come back well to Harps opening. Ryan Taylor fed Kennedy who put in a cross finding FLETCHER in plenty of space inside the box and after dummying the keeper he slotted home from six yards.

Roselea were looking hungry and almost added to their lead in 9 and 10 minutes. Firstly a great diagonal ball from Mustard found Colquhoun flying down the right and his cross was almost prodded home by Paul Taylor the when the ball came in Urquhart had a speculative overhead kick go just over.

As good as Roselea were playing Harp were not sitting down and had their own spells of pressure and Mcleod had to hold two headers, one from a corner and one from a flighted free kick just after.

Roselea were on the attack again and another danger cross from Taylor in 12 minutes so Urquhart and the home keeper Hill almost go eye to eye with neither taking the forward role and the ball went behind.

In 15 minutes Harp broke and only a great block from the all involved Ryan Taylor saw Ramsays shot be deflected behind for a corner,

Roselea then break from deep with Anderson carrying the ball from deep inside his own half before finding Fletcher wide left, Anderson kept his run going and got his head to Fletchers cross however Hill was well positioned to find the diving header and saved well.

Things settle down and some of Roseleas passing is excellent however it is not until the 28th minute that they have a strike on goal. A ball falls to Paul Taylor 25 yards out and his 25 yard swerving shot almost deceived Hill in the home goal but he did well to turn it round for a corner.

Roselea lose possession from the corner and Harp break quickly to the other end, Mcleod is left with no option other than to handle outside the corner of the box and receives a yellow card. The free kick meets the head of Fotheringham and Taylors overhead effort is just wide of the Roselea goal.

Roselea’s next chance comes in 35 minutes however Kennedy cannot balance himself to get a shot in and plays the ball wide to Taylor before Harp clear for a corner.

Roselea were reduced to ten men in 38 minutes. Ross Colquhoun who had been booked two minutes earlier for an off the ball argument then went on a mazy run and lunged at the ball leaving referee Jeff Banks no choice but to show a second yellow and send the Roselea player off.

Harp go close for an equaliser when Toveys shot is just deflected behind for a corner with Mcleod stranded.

Just as half time is coming Anderson almost gets his head to a Kennedy corner when the slightest touch would be a certain goal.

Half Time: Lochee Harp 0 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea made a change of personnel at half time with a reshuffle due to Colquhouns red card. Whyte comes on to replace Paul Taylor to give Roselea a more defence set up. Despite the apparent negative approach Roselea increased their lead in 46 minutes. RYAN TAYLOR burst through and hit an unstoppable 30-yard low shot beyond Hill to double the visitor’s lead.

Roselea were on a comfortable two-goal cushion despite the one-man disadvantage and Harp made this look vulnerable with a goal on 61 minutes. WILLIAMSON. Ramsay found himself in room at the edge of the box, Mcleod shut the ball down and saved well however the ball fell to the Harp veteran and he finished well from 20 yards.

WILLIAMSON was being a thorn in the Roselea side and in 59 minutes he equalised for Harp. He evaded three tackles in the box before shimmying another and despatched a great curling shot into the corner of the net to square the game.

Roselea made a change with Collier replacing Kennedy in 63 minutes.

In 75 minutes Harp had a good chance when Ramsay broke on Roselea’s left but again McLeod was swift out and blocked.

Anderson hit the bar for Roselea with a great strike from 25 yards, which caught the Harp defence on the back foot.

Ryan Taylor was still full of energy and on another long run he was brought down by Fotheringham however the yellow card was probably well accepted considering the fact that Taylor was away from the Harp defence.

With 8 minutes to go Aitken replaced Anderson for Roselea.

In 86 minutes Harp send in a very dangerous free kick from the man of the moment Williamson and Mcleod does well to hold the low ball at his near post.

Roselea win the tie with a deserved goal in the 94th minute. Callum Rae who had put in a great shift in midfield shut the ball down releasing Aitken who bore in on goal before unselfishly squaring to COLLIER in a better position and their team mates swamped them in celebration having won the tie.

Final Score: Lochee Harp 2 Montrose Roselea 3

A very satisfactory win for Roselea which will see them progress to the 2nd Round of a competition which they don’t normally do well in. Some great performances from Fletcher, Rae and Ryan Taylor were the difference that saw them through. This week sees the visit of near neighbours Brechin Vics in a League match that will see two teams at the lower end of the table going head to head. The match kicks of at 2.30pm at Broomfield Park. Roselea have arranged a friendly with Newburgh JFC on Sat Oct 1st with a 1pm KO, player travel details will follow shortly.

VIOLET TOO STRONG FOR ROSELEA

Posted by Roy Gill at Sep 3, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

DUNDEE VIOLET v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST REGION McBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION

SAT SEPT 3rd 2011

Whilst most were looking to get ready for the big Scotland International match Roselea were in Dundee looking to build on their opening day draw with Arbroath Vics. Roselea’s side was again dictated to by holidays. On the plus side Sean Mustard and Joe Aitken returned from holiday however Craig Anderson, Scott Riach and Bob Urquhart were away and missed out. On top of that Stewart Fletcher had picked up a reoccurrence of his tonsillitis on holiday and missed out. Roselea drafted in a trialist on the form of ex Montrose FC player Ian Greig who played on the left hand side of midfield.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Whyte, Reoch, Ryan Taylor, Kennedy, Rae, Mustard, Greig (T), Collier & Paul Taylor. Subs: Hood, Aitken, Strachan, Rodger, Brand & Craig.

Roselea faced a strong breeze as they kicked off on a flat surface which had been freshly rolled.

Roselea had the worst possible start when they conceded a goal in only 2 minutes. Slack marking at a throw in allowed the thrower to receive the ball back and his cross was easily headed home by Ross GRANT to give the homesters the perfect start.

Roselea fought back and on 6 minutes quick Colquhoun free kick set Colin Kennedy away down the right hand side, his dangerous cross was turned behind for a corner thwarting the diving header from Collier. The corner broke out to the Greig edge of the box but his right foot effort was too high.

Violet had a good move in 10 minutes involving four player and resulted in Grant shooting over with the advancing Mcleod doing enough to put him off. Three minutes later hesitation by the Roselea defence saw Mcleod having to save at the feet of McConnechy who appeared to follow through. The game was stopped for a few minutes to allow treatment and the game restarted with a drop ball.

Roselea had a claim for a goal in 26 minutes when Collier flicked on a Kennedy corner and the ball was cleared off the line by a Violet defender. Roselea’s claim  that the ball had crossed the line were not met by the Assistant and play raged on. Another corner in 31 minutes saw Whyte head just over as Roselea’s performance improved.

Violet have a chance on 38 minutes after a couple of defensive headers were caught up in the wind, the ball eventually fell to Ballantyne but he shot over. Violet went closer a minute later when Ryan Taylor was caught on the ball and allowed Grant to progress from a wide angle but his cross goal shot hit the outside of the far post before going out.

Callum Rae picked up a booking for a foul as the half drew to a close. The free kick was too weak to trouble Mcleod from 25 yards out.

Half Time: Violet 1 Roselea 0

Violet are first to show in the second half in 50 minutes. A ball is not properly cleared inside the Roselea box and McConnechy has an overhead kick which is finally cleared.

Roselea show some promise of getting back into the game on 53 minutes when Taylor wins a header which lands to Mustard 30 yards out however he cannot get the ball to sit down and his volley is easily dealt with by the Violet keeper.

A minute later Violet double their lead. A long clearance from the keeper finds McConnechy on the left and with no one picking up ANDERSON who had the freedom of the Roselea half he rolled the ball into his path and Anderson slotted home well from 12 yards.

Roselea have their best chance of the match in 66 minutes when Paul Taylor did well to turn his two markers in the box however his low near post shot is saved by the keepers legs. Roselea keep looking for a lifeline to get back into the match and Collier lays back to Mustard who has his shot blocked behind for a corner.

Roselea make two substitutions to try and rustle up a way back into the match. Rodger & Aitken replaced Paul Taylor & Kennedy.

In 80 minutes violet finally put the game beyond Roselea’s reach with a third goal. Anderson again found himself in bags of room and tried to lob Mcleod however his woeful attempt fell to BALLANTYNE who finished despite Mcleod blocking his first effort.

Hood replaced Ryan Taylor in an effort to get something back but despite some promise Roselea could not claw anything back and referee Kenny Beats drew a disappointing afternoon for the visitors to a close.

Final Score: Dundee Violet 3 Roselea 0

A disappointing display and a result a poor scoreline against one of the favourites for the League. After losing a such a poor goal at the start of the game the team played well in the first half however two more preventable goals killed the game. Perhaps it was a case of Violet bossed the game and it will be a lesson for Roselea’s younger players.

Roselea now get a chance to regroup and get things together as they have a free week on Sept 10th followed by a cup game at Lochee Harp on Sept 17th. League action resumes when Brechin Vics come to Broomfield Park on Sat Sept 24th.

STALEMATE WITH THE VICS AGAIN

MONTROSE ROSELEA v ARBROATH VICS

McBOOKIE.COM EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT AUGUST 27th 2011

Roselea entertained Arbroath Vics just two weeks after they drew 0-0 in the DJ Laing Cup. Vics went on to win the section and lost cruelly to Carnoustie in the Semi Finals losing 3-2 to an injury time goal. Roselea were forced to make a change from the team who defeated Forfar Albion 2-0 the previous week with Stewart Fletcher on holiday. Also missing were Joe Aitken and Sean Mustard who were both also on holiday.

Roselea: Mcleod Colquhoun, Whyte, Reoch, R Taylor, Kennedy, Rae, Anderson, Urquhart, Collier & Hood. Subs: Riach, Rodger, Strachan, Brand & Craig

Roselea kicked off in front of a decent crowd on a very flat surface.

Arbroath Vics had the first chance in 8 minutes however ex Roselea man Fotheringham’s effort was too weak to trouble Mcleod.

Roselea had a chance in 14 minutes when Colquhoun played a ball up to the chest of Collier who spun and sent a dangerous ball towards Anderson but he was in an offside position.

Lee Hood went on a strong run down the left hand side in 18 minutes and found Collier in the box and the striker swivelled before sending a low shot against Hutcheson.

Arbroath Vics then forced a couple of corners but Roselea defended them well.

Robert Urquhart had a run and shot in 24 minutes but his 25 yard shot was blocked but looked on target.

Stephen broke down the right hand side for Arbroath Vics and his dangerous cross had to be turned behind for a corner with Owbridge waiting to pounce.

On the half hour mark Kennedy returned a corner into the Vics box and Johnston did well to block a shot as the ball bobbled around in the 6 yard box.

On 38 minutes a quick throw in from Taylor found Hood who in turn passed to Kennedy and his speculative volley went just over the bar.

Right on half time Vics had their best chance of the match. Fotheringham who was running out of ideas of what to do cleverly flicked the ball into the Roselea box and found the head of Owbridge who brought out a magnificent save from Mcleod who then gathered at the second attempt.

Half Time Roselea 0 Arbroath Vics 0

Roselea almost draw first blood a minute into the second half. Urquhart is fouled and quickly plays the ball to Colquhoun. The right back sends a long ball into the Vics defence and Collier who is stretching just fails to make contact with the ball.

Anderson is next to have a go for Roselea but his 25 yard run and left footed shot is just off target in 46 minutes.

Both sides had free kick opportunities within minutes of each other, Hood managed to get the ball in target however his shot lacked power then Mcleish found the Roselea wall with his effort and the ball ducked behind for a corner.

In 65 minutes Roselea had a let off when a shot from a Vics corner was cleared off the line and the ball fell to Vics number 4 but his shot was tipped over the bar by Mcleod.

In 69 minutes Mcleish had a 35 yard effort go just wide of the left hand post for the Vics.

Roselea make a change in 70 minutes with Riach replacing Hood. He picked up a quick booking despite seeming to win the ball. All a bit puzzling when a few other players had several tackles go unpunished.

Roselea should have scored and picked up the  points with 4 minutes remaining. After some constant pressure Ryan Taylor sent in a cross which Collier flicked onto the bar and bounced on the line, the ball then broke out to Craig Anderson who smacked a good shot off a Vics defender on the line.

The last action saw Jones of Vics go down in the box but with all expecting a booking for a dive he was booked for handball.

Final Score: Roselea 0 Arbroath Vics 0

From an early stage this match looked like following the League Cup match with the same scoreline. Roselea had the upperhand in pressure but once again the Vics rearguard did well to soak up any Roselea attacks. With a bit more luck Roselea could have taken all 3 points especially with the chance at the end.

Match Sponsors Derek Craig and NOV chose Ross Mcleod as their Man of the Match. The keeper did not have a lot to do but had an excellent save at the end of the first half and also took every cross confidently.

Roselea continue on Mcbookie.com League business when they travel to Dundee to face on of the favourites Violet. The match kicks off at 2.30pm. Roselea have a free day on Sept 10th and then travel to Lochee Harp on Sept 17th in the East of Scotland Cup. The draw for the 1st Round of the Emirates Junior Cup takes place on Tuesday August 31st. Roselea will then know their fixtures for Sept 24th and early October.

ROSELEA PIPPED AT THE POST

FORFAR ALBION v MONTROSE ROSELEA

DJ LAING LEAGUE CUP SECTION B

Sat August 20th 2011

Roselea travelled to the quaint setting of Guthrie Park Forfar for their final match in the League Cup Sections. Only a win would be of benefit to either club with Arbroath Vics sitting on four points and having Blairgowire at home with a win expected.

Roselea made a couple of changes from the team that started in the previous weeks draw with Arbroath Vics. Aitken and Mustard were replaced by Fletcher and Rae.

Roselea:Mcleod,Colquhoun,Whyte,Rae,Collier,R.Taylor,Fletcher,Anderson,Hood,Reoch,Kennedy. Subs: Urquhart, Aitken, Riach, P.Taylor, Mustard, Rodger, Brand.

On a glorious day, Roselea faced Forfar Albion who had a notable result the previous Saturday with a 7-1 win over Blairgowrie. This was the third and final DJ Laing league cup group match.

Roselea started the game well with Lee Hood placing a good cross in at the far post with no takers.

8 minutes gone and the first booking of the game would go to the home sides Falconer for a strong tackle on Collier.

Forfar Albion had their first chance of the game with Mcintosh shooting across the goal with Mcleod making a fingertip save around the post.

Roselea come close to scoring in 15 minutes with a high ball entering Albion`s box Collier challenges the keeper who can only palm it out to Stewart Fletcher and his looping header goes inches past the post.

A minute later and good build up again for the Roselea with Collier knocking the ball down to Fletcher who in turn drives the ball across the goal again no takers.

Roselea are restricting Albion to few opportunities as Albions Mcintosh tries from fully 25 yards with Mcleod easily gathering.

In 26 minutes Hood tries his luck with a shot from the edge of the box that drifts past the post. On the half hour mark Roselea win a free kick 25 yards out with Craig Andersons effort also just wide of the post.Roselea continue attacking as Colin Kennedy puts in a great cross with Lee Hood out jumping everyone and his header once again just over the bar.

Stewart Fletcher is booked on 32 minutes for tripping an opponent.

34 minutes gone and the referee blows for half time!! The matter is addressed and the game is restarted. A couple of minutes into the restart and Callum Rae gets his customary booking making it his third in three games.

In a rare chance for the home side on 43 minutes as the ball lands at Reynolds feet he shoots ten yards from goal but the ball sails yards over the bar.

With half time approaching Albions Hood is booked for a tackle on Callum Rae.

Half Time: Forfar Albion 0 Roselea 0

Roselea start the second half sleeping with Albion having two chances in as many minutes. Firstly Reynolds shot narrowly across the goal and then Mcintosh who looked two yards offside shot just wide of the upright.

Roselea are next to try their luck with Craig Anderson having a go from 20 yards, their keeper makes a great save palming it out for a corner. From the resultant corner Paul Whyte rises above everyone and his header goes just wide.

Sean Mustard replaces Colin Kennedy on 58 minutes.

Roselea take the lead straight after. A throw in reaches James Collier and he shoots from 20 yards giving the keeper no chance.

An hour is gone and Albions sub Reid is booked for a tackle on Sean Mustard.

Roselea make a change after 66 minutes with Scott Riach replacing Lee Hood.

5 minutes later and Stewart Fletcher makes it 2-0 when he runs in on goal and beats the keeper with a header.

With 10 minutes to go Paul Taylor replaces Stewart Fletcher.

On 85 minutes Ryan Taylor and Albions Reid clash which results in both getting yellow cards meaning Reid having his second booking and was ordered off.

Roselea should have had a penalty in the final minute as a defender handled the ball as it came off the post from Paul Taylors acute angled shot.

Final Score: Forfar Albion 0 Montrose Roselea 2

Another strong performance from the Roselea should have resulted in more goals but this will come if they keep playing the same way. Roselea end the section in second place undefeated and have not conceded a goal in open play. Arbroath Vics eventual 4-1 win over Blairgowrie means they qualify for the Semi Finals and face Carnoustie who romped their section. At one point Roselea thought they might be heading to the Semis with Arbroath Vics drawing 1-1 at half time.

Roselea get an early chance for revenge as the next match is the first McBookie.com league match on the 27th August against Arbroath Vics at Broomfield. Kick off 2.30pm.

ARBROATH VICS KEEP LEA AT BAY

Posted by Roy Gill at Aug 12, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V ARBROATH VICS

DJ LAING LEAGUE CUP

SAT AUGUST 13th 2011

Roselea faced local rival Arbroath Vics in the second of their three League Cup matches. With Roselea drawing and Vics winning their opening games a win was going to be a must for the home side and anything else would mean that their chances would be slim of reaching the knock out Semi Finals stage. Roselea suffered a blow when Calum Rae was declared unfit although he took a spot on the bench unlikely to play and Stewart Fletcher was ruled out with Tonsillitis. On the plus side James Collier returned and commanded a starting place alongside Joe Aitken in attack. Broomfield Park was looking as good as it has for many years and the weather was pleasant as well.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Whyte, Reoch, R Taylor, Kennedy, Mustard, Anderson, Hood, Collier & Aitken. Subs: Riach, P Taylor, Strachan, Urquhart, Craig, Rodger & Rae.

Roselea almost bore first blood in 4 minutes. Aitken annoyed the Vics defence and when the ball broke to Anderson 25 yards out he hit a well controlled volley which Hutcheson beat out at full stretch.

The referee was not going to get anything go and Reoch found himself booked on 8 minutes for a late tackle. Warren sent in a very dangerous free kick which Mcleod had to hold with onrushing Vic’s players following up.

Roselea took a quick free kick with Kennedy feeding Ryan Taylor down the line and he rounded three players before cutting back to Kennedy to shoot but again Hutcheson beat the ball out. Aitken followed up with a header which was saved on the line.

On 16 minutes a Taylor corner found its way to Collier at the front post however his shot was blocked and the Vic’s defence cleared the danger again.

Three minutes later Roselea were awarded a free kick 24 yards out after a couple of fouls on Lea players. Hood stepped up and sent a dipping free kick just over.

Play swung to the other end and a minute later the dangerous Stephen sent in a low cross which went right across goal with no takers.

The game was flowing from end to end and a penalty claim for a push on Collier was waved on and followed up by Mcleod turning a Nicky Smith shot behind for a corner.

There were still no goals on the half hour mark but Vics had their best spell of pressure forcing a couple of corners but Roselea defended well and blocked a shot from Durno. Kennedy was booked for another foul and from the free kick Mcleod had to stand tall to save from Smith at the far post.

On 34 minutes Aitken and Taylor combined well before Aitken laid the ball back to Mustard who hit a great first time shot but it was too straight to trouble Hutcheson.

Arbroath Vics had their best chance of the half in 40 minutes when Owbridge hit a low shot from the edge of the box which Mcleod pushed to the side and the keeper had to get up quickly to block Stephen who was coming in to follow up and score.

Roselea had the last chance of the half almost on time after another scramble following a Kennedy corner but again the Vic’s kept Roselea at bay.

Half Time: Roselea 0 Arbroath Vics 0

Roselea opened the second half strongly and had a slight breeze behind them. A quick free kick found Kennedy on the left and his cross field pass found Aitken coming in at the far post and he connected too strongly on the volley when a header may have produced a better result.

Roselea had their best chance of the game in 58 minutes when Collier and Aitken combined well 30 yards out, Collier then used his strength to hold off a couple of chances before shooting under the keeper who managed to get a foot on the ball and it went agonisingly past the post for a corner.

From the corner Kennedy found Collier at the far post and his header back across goal found Whyte who’s header was turned over the bar.

Roselea had the next chance as well on 71 minutes. Hood switched the ball across to Kennedy and his cross was met by the head of Collier however the ball fell to the feet of Hutcheson who held well.

On 72 minutes Riach replaced the hard working Aitken.

With 11 minutes remaining Roselea should have taken the lead with a double chance. Hood was through on Hutcheson but instead of shooting squared to Collier who appeared to be fouled as was away to shoot but referee Leslie did not see it the same way.

Paul Taylor replaced Lee Hood with 9 minutes left on the clock.

Taylor almost made an impact when he had a goalward header cleared after Collier challenged the keeper but from 16 yards he was not going to beat Florence who had read the danger and headed away.

Full Time: Roselea 0 Arbroath Vics 0

For the second week running Roselea put in a good performance but did not get the result they were after. Although they did not create as many chances as they did against Blairgowrie they did have enough and better chances than Vics to win the match. Match Sponsors Halliburton chose Lee Hood as their Man of the Match. This Saturday will see Roselea travel to Guthrie Park Forfar to face Albion in the final match in the Section and only a freak result will prevent Arbroath Vics reaching the Semi Finals at Roselea’s expense for the second year running. Arbroath Vics then return to Broomfield Park for the opening McBookie.com North Division match on Saturday August 27th. Both matches Kick off at 2.30pm
