MONTROSE ROSELEA v BLAIRGOWRIE

MCBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION
SAT FEB 25th 2012

Roselea welcomed Blairgowrie to Broomfield Park for a League match which would be their third visit to Montrose having played in the League Cup and Scottish Cup at the same venue. A fourth match between the sides will also take place in the return League match at Blairgowrie. The away side held the upper hand in the previous games with a 1-1 draw in the League Cup encounter and won the Emirates Junior Cup tie 3-2. A win for the home side would see them go joint top of the League although they would have played two more games than leaders Violet. Roselea entered the match with the injured Calum Rae and Ross Colquhoun still out although both are making progress in their comebacks. Lee Hood and Jack Rodger were also missing being farmed out to Johnshaven and Brechin Vics to get some game time. Broomfield Park was looking good not having to endure the worst of winters and was flat although very dry. The flat calm conditions in the morning were replaced by the expected strong wind that only Broomfield can muster up.

Roselea: McLeod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte, Reoch, Urquhart, Anderson, Mustard, Webster, Collier & Aitken. Subs: Kennedy, Riach, Fletcher, Brand, Craig & Colquhoun.

Roselea were first to attack when Webster broke down the left hand side and his early cross found Collier who took a good touch however Pirie managed to do enough to make him scoop his shot high before keeper O’Brien punched away.

In 12 minutes Blairgowrie get one of a number of free kicks awarded to them in the opening spell. Axworthy tries his luck from 25 yards wind assisted and Mcleod tips over to make sure. Axworthy almost got on the end of another free kick in 22 minutes but his overhead kick goes wide.

In 24 minutes some good play from Roselea saw Ryan Taylor break on the left and he middled for Collier who took the ball in with his back to goal, O’Brien the keeper managed to get his hand round and pushed the ball out for throw in. A minute later Roselea have another chance when Collier and Aitken break on to a through ball from Urquhart. Collier prods the ball off the keeper and a defender cleared Aitkens follow up as Roselea hunted for the opener.

Axworthy capitalised on a mistake by Paul Taylor and his blistering left foot drive went just wide of the Roselea goal.

Roselea have another chance just before the half hour mark. Aitken does all expected of him as he flicked a Webster cross goalwards with only the wind preventing the ball crossing the line before it is hooked clear.

Salisbury of Blairgowrie did well to control a long ball and his right footed touch takes the ball inside and along the 18 yard line however his left footed shot is covered by Mcleod as it drifted wide.

Five minutes before the break Aitken has another chance for the home side. Webster sends in a great early cross which Aitken misses however he gets the break of the ball and gets a shot away which O’Brien saved at full length.

As half time approached Blairgowrie could have been down to ten men when Pirie who had been booked earlier went in heavy on Anderson who had been booked earlier. Referee Graham surprisingly awarded a free kick to the away side.

Half Time: Roselea 0 Blairgowrie 0

The first incident of the second half saw Blairgowrie have strong appeals for a penalty after Salisbury went down in the box under a strong tackle from Whyte. The referee awarded a corner. On the hour mark the ever dangerous Axworthy breaks on the right and sends in a dangerous ball which Reoch does well to clear behind for a corner. In 68 Axworthy has another low shot from the edge of the box which Mcleod turned behind for a corner.

Roselea change things in 70 minutes with Fletcher going on for Aitken who had worked hard all day. Fletcher latched on to a good low cross from Paul Taylor but was well wide of the near post.

Roselea took the lead in a very tight match on 77 mins with a great goal from James Collier. Kevin Webster fired a free kick into the wall but then flighted a delightful ball back into the box which COLLIER headed over the advancing Obrien and into the net. There were no appeals from the Blair players but the officials and supporters were incensed by the decision with some very vocal calls to the referee.

McDonald of Blairgowrie was lucky to remain on the pitch after an off the ground two footed tackle which received a yellow card.

Things were starting to get tetchy and Anderson was then lucky not to get booked after he followed through on Pirie and led to a mass argument between opposing players. After things calmed down Salisbury of Blair received a second yellow and was sent off with 5 minutes remaining.

Right on time Kevin Webster broke on the right and had a brilliant right footed shot swerve just wide of the goal and that brought the match to an end.

Final Score: Montrose Roselea 1 Blairgowrie 0

Roselea will be happy to take the three points in what was an even and entertaining match played in testing conditions. Both teams tried to get the ball down and play football and Axworthy of the visitors was always a danger to the home defence. Craig Anderson and Sean Mustard had their best games for some time and bossed the midfield and James Collier was always a threat up top and took his tally to 15 goals for the season. The win takes Roselea top equal with leaders Violet who had slumped to their second defeat running in a cup match.

Roselea have now played two more games than Violet but with them still having to visit Montrose, Roselea will still be in the hunt. Another tough game is in prospect this week with a trip to Westview Park, Kirriemuir to play Kirrie Thistle. Kick Off is at 2.30pm

ROSELEA TAKE DERBY HONOURS

BRECHIN VICS v MONTROSE ROSELEA

McBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION

SAT FEB 18th 2012

Roselea made the short journey to Victoria Park to face near neighbours Brechin Vics looking for their first win in 5 games whilst the Vics were keen to forget about the heavy defeat from last week.

Roselea:Mcleod,P.Taylor,R.Taylor,Anderson,Reoch,Whyte,Urquhart,Kennedy,Collier,Aitken,Webster. Subs:Riach, Hood,Fletcher, Rodger, Strachan, Craig, Brand

The game kicked off with the Roselea facing a stiff wind and the awkward low sun but were soon into their rhythm starting strongly with Collier beating two defenders in the box before setting up Aitken who shoots over the bar from 15 yards.

2 minutes later it’s Colliers turn to have a shot at goal and his effort goes narrowly over with the keeper well beaten.

Against the run of play Brechin Vics open the scoring with some slackness from the defence and Ryan YOUNG scores in 12 minutes. Worse was to follow for Roselea 5 minutes later when Vics go 2 up through Charles McKENZIE picking the ball up from a throw and placing the ball beyond McLeod’s grasp and into the far corner of the net.

Roselea are struggling with Robbies kick outs that are sailing over the heads of the Roselea defence and when Mcnaught controls one of these kick outs Paul Whyte brings him done just outside the box in a dangerous position. Whyte is booked and the freekick is well held by Mcleod.

Roselea reply with some strong attacking football and in the 28th minute finally have some joy when COLLIER collects a pass from Anderson runs into the box beating a couple of defenders before shooting past Robbie from an acute angle.

Minutes later Collier and Aitken play a great 1-2 and with Aitken ready to shoot a Vics defender manages to clear the danger.

35 minutes gone and Collier thought he had equalised but his effort is disallowed and is booked for an apparent handball.

Roselea were given a reminder when Mcnaught breaks free but shoots wildly over from 20 yards.

40 minutes gone and again the Roselea thought they had equalised with a freekick from Kennedy reaching Whyte and his great header is well saved by Robbie.

Half Time: Brechin Vics 2 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea start the second half pressing the Vics defence even further back with Webster and Urquharts runs causing all sorts of problems. Ryan

Taylor is next to throw in a lovely cross and Collier again just fails to connect and is frantically cleared.

Webster is next to try his luck with a great solo run and shoots across the goal with the keeper getting a great touch for a corner.

70 minutes gone and the Roselea thought they had equalised with Urquhart challenging the Vics keeper for a high ball and heading into the net only for it to be chalked off for an infringement on the keeper. A couple of minute later Websters freekick flies past the post from fully 30 yards.

77 minutes gone and Websters corner lands at Fletchers feet who knocks it to Collier and his shot is cleared off the line by a Vics defender.

Kennedy is next to have an effort saved well by the keeper. Then finally with 10 minutes to go Roselea finally equalise with Urquharts through ball landing to COLLIER and he makes no mistake for his second of the game.

It was only going to be a matter of time before the Roselea would grab another and it took just 2 minutes for it to happen.

Kennedys freekick 35 yards out went high into the box with Collier flicking it goalwards and Paul WHYTE making sure it had crossed the line and into the net to give the Roselea the lead for the first time in the game and then held on comfortably till the final whistle.

Final Score: Brechin Vics 2 Montrose Roselea 3

Roselea had the lions share of possession today but conceding 2 early goals made it difficult but well done for the great team spirit and fightback against a gritty Vics side that battled well.

Roseleas next game is at home to Blairgowrie in the McBookie.com North Division. Kick off is 2.15pm.

PANMURE HOLD OUT IN CUP

CARNOUSTIE PANMURE v MONTROSE ROSELEA

GA CUP 2nd ROUND

SAT FEB 11th 2012

Roselea travelled to Laing Park to face Superleague side Carnoustie Panmure in the 2nd Round of the GA Cup with a home tie against Aberdeen Superleague leaders Hermes the lure for the winners.

Roselea had a couple on injury problems despite the 3 week lay off from action with long term injury victim Calum Rae being joined by Ross Colquhoun who will also be absent for some time after an ankle injury was sustained in training. Paul Taylor fitted in at left back and Colin Kennedy returned to the squad after a spell working away.

Roselea pulled off a surprise by signing ex Montrose winger Kevin Webster on a short term deal following his release from Cove Rangers and he took his place in the side. Websters ex Cove team mate and ex Roselea player Calum Watson lined up for the opposition as he is on loan to them until the end of February.

On a glorious day for football Laing Park had recovered from the frost of the previous weeks and was looking in great condition although conditions were wet underfoot with the surface likely to cut up.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Reoch, Whyte, Urquhart, Mustard, Anderson, Webster, Fletcher & Collier. Subs: Riach, Aitken, Rodger, Hood, Kennedy, Brand & Craig.

Carnoustie kicked the match off with the sun at their backs and a slight breeze also in their favour not that it was going to be a major factor. In an even opening Webster of Roselea and Gates of Carnoustie were looking the most likely to cause any damage.

Paul Taylor and Sean Mustard combined well on the right side in 10 minutes and won Roselea a couple of corners which tested Carnoustie but they dealt with them without much worry.

Carnoustie had the first chance in 19 minutes when an innocuous looking cross was flicked by Watson and McLeod had to dive at full length to gather.

Carnoustie were getting on top and Clark laid the ball back to Watson who had a strike from the edge of the box but again Mcleod held well.

In 24 minutes Roselea countered and Urquhart broke from midfield and fed Fletcher who was one on one with the keeper but the Carnoustie number one got out and blocked.

In 27 minutes Roselea had a let off when Watson spun and crossed to Gates who crashed a volley off the bar.

In 28 minutes Roselea had their best chance so far. Collier turned well and slipped the ball wide to Webster who cut along the by-line and was finally crowded out as he shot with claims that Robertson scooped the ball off the line with his arm.

Carnoustie had shaded the early stages and they took the lead on 29 minutes. Watson played the ball back to ROBERTS who struck a great shot from 25 yards and despite the brave efforts of Mcleod who touched it onto the bar the ball found its way into the net.

Clark had a snapshot a minute later and with the ball moving in the air Mcleod elected to punch away to safety.

Carnoustie were on top and sensing a second goal and Cook rifled in another shot which again Mcleod did well to hold. Watson was next to try his luck for Carnoustie as he broke on the left but the ever alert Mcleod blocked his shot and it spun across the Roselea goal with Cook just missing as he slid in.

Half Time: Carnoustie Panmure 1 Montrose Roselea 0

Two minutes into the second half Clark of Carnoustie raided up the left hand side and just when it looked like he would cross he drove the ball at the near post, hitting it and it going behind to safety.

2 minutes later Carnoustie elected to take a quick free kick and Mustard blocked much to the homesides anger however the ball broke to Webster who ran 20 yards before shooting wide with a couple of other options on.

The next chance came in 59 minutes when a dangerous Webster free kick found no takers at the far post and the ball spun agonisingly wide. Roselea were finding a way into the game and a quickly taken free kick by Paul Taylor found Webster & Fletcher at the far post but neither could take control of the ball and get a shot away.

In 64 minutes Mcleod comes to Roselea’s rescue after Gates breaks away and the keeper stood tall and strong to beat the ball away from the advancing winger.

Roselea were getting a foothold on the game but disaster struck in 65 minutes when GATES fired in a second for the home side. Mcleod punched a corner under pressure and it landed to Gates just outside the corner of the 6 yard box and he struck a brilliant shot high into the roof of the net to give the homesters a 2 goal lead.

Both sides made changes straight after with Aitken replacing Fletcher for Roselea and Watson being taken off for the home side.

With 15 minutes to go Roselea got back in the game with a goal from Paul WHYTE. A long throw from Paul Taylor landed at the feet of Kevin Webster who played it to Whyte to score from near in.

In 78 minutes Hood replaced Ryan Taylor for Roselea.

In 85 minutes Roselea who had Carnoustie on the back foot now had a chance when a Paul Taylor took another long throw and Whyte prodded goalwards before the ball broke to Webster but he could not get a chance to shoot.

Riach replaced Urquhart in 86 minutes.

Roselea had a couple of more chances near the end but it wasn’t to be their day and Carnoustie held out for what was just a deserved victory.

Full Time: Carnoustie Panmure 2 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea will feel that they should have taken something from this game against what was Superleague opposition however after a slow start when they looked to be giving the opposition too much respect they took the game to the home side and did run them close. It was another close defeat to superior opponents however these are the type of games Roselea should be trying to win to progress at a higher level. There were a number of good performances however the showing by Kevin Webster proved that if they can hang on to him he will be a great acquisition.

Roselea return to McBookie.com North Division action and will travel to Victoria Park Brechin to face local rivals Vics. Vics will be smarting after a heavy loss to League leaders Violet and will be looking for a better result against their close neighbours. Kick off is at 2.15pm

OAKLEY SICKEN LEA AT THE DEATH

Posted by Roy Gill at Jan 20, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v OAKLEY UTD

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 2nd ROUND

SAT JAN 21st 2012

Roselea faced Premier League leaders Oakley Utd in a second round East of Scotland Cup match on Sat. The teams had met on a couple of occasions in recent times both in Scottish Cup ties. In 1987 after a 3-3 draw at Broomfield and 2-2 draw at Oakley a Kevin Young goal saw Roselea win the second replay in Dundee and then in 2005 Roselea beat Oakley 4-1 in a Scottish tie.

Roselea had some selection worries with Colin Kennedy working, Paul Whyte and Bob Urquhart both fighting injury to play.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Whyte, Reoch, R Taylor, Urquhart, Mustard, Anderson, Riach, Collier & Fletcher. Subs: Aitken, P Taylor, Hood, Rodger, Brand & Craig

On a very windy day both teams took to the flat surface with Roselea having the advantage of the elements at their back as they kicked off towards St Cyrus.

Roselea were first on the attack in ten minutes when a diagonal free kick was flighted in and although the ball found the head of Whyte he could not direct it on target in the difficult conditions.

Oakley cane back a couple of minutes later and Kelly cut in from the left and found Ross advancing from the right back position he had a curling shot which went just round the post.

Roselea took the lead in 12 minutes. Blackadder misplaced a pass in midfield which Ryan Taylor picked up and strode forward and after beating his man he sent a low cross in which was turned into his own net by CUSICK for an own goal.

Oakley equalised in 23 minutes. Kelly broke down the left after a great pass found him in space he squared for Dair to shoot and after Mcleod blocked his shot the ball fell back to KELLY who scored despite the efforts of two defenders on the line.

In 25 minutes Mcleod had another fine save when he turned a Dodds effort behind for a corner. A minute later Mustard had a fine left foot strike from distance but it was too straight at Sandison in the Oakley goal.

Sinclair of Oakley found himself in the book for a crude challenge on Collier on the half way line on 34 minutes.

In 39 minutes Mcleod made a fine block when he slid out to foil the advancing McDowell and gathered the ball when it broke.

Half Time: Roselea 1 Oakley Utd 1

Roselea should have regained the lead two minutes into the second half when a well timed run by Urquhart saw him clear and his low shot from the angle went just wide of the post.

Roselea were having to defend well against the wind and a dangerous Dodds cross had to be turned behind by Taylor at the far post for a corner in 55 minutes.

In 55 minutes Oakley were awarded a free kick some 30 yards out but with the wind at his back Blackadder elected to shoot. His first effort came back from the wall but his rebound was well struck and Mcleod had to scramble to save at the feet of Sinclair who was following up.

Two minutes later Roselea had another let off when the ball squirmed out of McLeod’s grasp and Whyte had to clear off the line.

In 67 minutes Jo Aitken replaced the injured Ryan Taylor.

In 74 minutes Mcleod had another great block with this time McDowell breaking on the right and after the Roselea stopper blocked with his knees he managed to get up and claim the loose ball.

Mcleod was putting on a great show in the Roselea goal however he was almost caught out by a Blackadder shot which seemed to be going over his hands however he recovered and also managed to get the follow up.

Roselea had a great chance to take the lead in 81 minutes when Fletcher was left clear following a mix up in the Oakley defence, he spotted the keeper off his line and chose a difficult chip shot which saw him lose his footing and the chance was gone.

A minute later another dangerous Blackadder free kick went just behind much to the relief of all in the home side.

In 84 minutes Hood replaced Fletcher.

Oakley were correctly reduced to 10 men in 85 minutes when Blackadder took offence to the fact that he had not had free kicks awarded in his favour and lashed out at the ankle of Craig Anderson and was shown the red card.

Roselea looked to take advantage of the extra man and pushed forward looking for the winning goal however it was a breakaway that cost them the tie in the 88th minute. Sub MCMILLAN picked the ball up on the half way line and ran 30 yards before sending a great low shot past Mcleod and into the corner of the net to the jubilation of the travelling support.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Oakley Utd 2

Despite the score not going the way of the home side they put in a great display with no lack of effort against a very good and experienced Oakley side who will likely be playing Super League football next season. The winning goal was a sucker punch with penalties beckoning however it does show the fine line between success and failure at that level. Roselea had some great displays however Ross Mcleod in the goal had a string of great saves especially in the second half.

Roselea return to League business this week with a trip to Blairgowrie who beat them in the Emirates Junior Cup. It will be another tough game at Davie Park. At night the team will attend the Clubs 8th Sportsman’s Dinner at the Links Hotel which commences at 6.30 for 7pm.

VIOLET DELIGHTED WITH BROOMFIELD DRAW

Posted by Roy Gill at Jan 6, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V DUNDEE NORTH END

MCBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION

SAT JAN 7TH 2012

Roselea faced Dundee North End League match on Saturday and with both sides chasing leaders Dundee Violet a win was a must for both camps. North End sat 1 point behind Roselea who were in turn 4 points behind Violet. Roselea had injury problems in the lead up to the game with long term injury victim Calum Rae joined by Lee Hood and Paul Whyte who had picked up knocks in the friendly v Parkvale on Hogmany.

The Broomfield Park surface was freshened up in the morning after the impromptu visit of Peterhead who trained on the pitch on Thursday evening in preparation for their game with Celtic after their own facilities had been double booked. Sky and STV cameras filmed the session bringing the Lea some national exposure.

Roselea: McLeod, Colquhoun, Ryan Taylor, Mustard, Reoch, Urquhart, Kennedy, Anderson, Riach, Fletcher and Collier. Subs: Paul Taylor, Rodger, Aitken, Brand & Craig.

Disaster struck for Roselea in only 30 seconds when a defensive mixup allowed North End to attack and after Ryan Taylor cleared the initial shot the rebound was deflected into his own goal by Bob Urquhart.

Roselea came back well however two offiside decisions went against them. In 5 mins a Riach flick on was met by Collier however he was given offside and then 2 min later Urquhart had the ball in the net only to be given correctly offside.

In 12 min a good run down the left by Ryan Taylor saw him cross to Riach however Stewart got back and put the ball behind for a corner.

In 18 min North End and another chance when Muckersie corner fell to O'Neill who shot from 20 yards and was a couple of yards wide of the target.

On 20 min North end had their best chance after a couple 1-2s the ball broke to Hoy who had spectacular overhead kicked saved by McLeod just beside the post.

In 22 min Glennie of the away side was lucky to remain on the pitch after a very bad challenge on Mustard which only received a booking.

Just after the half hour mark Anderson went on the run and after a one-two with Urquhart he played the former in on the keeper who made a great save with his feet.

Roselea pressed as half-time approached and had a couple of chances just before the break. A Kennedy diagonal ball found after wide on the right and has excellent cutback was some behind for a corner.

Half time: Roselea 0 North End 0

Roselea started the second half strongly however it was North End who had the first chance in 48 min. On a breakaway Muckersie and Evans combined well and Muckersie had a shot which was deflected off Urquhart however McLeod saved comfortably.

On 50 min Roselea were unlucky not to level the scores. A well worked short corner saw Kennedy pick up the ball and shoot from 25 yards at an angle, keeper Fotheringham managed to tip the ball on to the bar and after it bounced on the line it was cleared. The ball went to the other end and if Mccomiskie had not tripped on the ball Roselea could have been in trouble.

North End then had a chance when Bolland had a shot from the edge of the box but it was deflected behind for a corner.

Roselea made a change on 65 min when Aitken replaced the injured Urquhart. The sub seemed to have an instant impact after Roselea drew level a minute later. Kennedy played a short corner to Taylor and his cross was flicked over their head of Fotheringham by FLETCHER.

Craig Anderson was full of running and yet another lung bursting run saw him draw the North End defence before slipping the ball to Scott Riach who saw his curling effort go over the top with troubling Fotheringham. Anderson then had a speculative shot from 35 yards and although the visiting keeper made it look easy it was a decent strike.

The game exploded in 80 minutes when a couple of fouls led to Gowans being red carded. Riach was booked for a challenge on Gowans and a minute later the North End player saw a straight red after a touch-line confrontation with Collier which the ref adjudged to be worth a sending off.

Roselea were spurred on by this and had a great chance to take the lead 2 minutes later. Collier linked up well with Fletcher and received a return pass before shooting low only for Fotheringham to block with his feet again, Aitken following up just failed to connect with the rebound.

Paul Taylor replaced Ross Colquhoun with 5 minutes left on the clock. Roselea pressed North End for the last few minutes but could not break them down to get the winner and North End also had some pressure on the break as the day drew to a close.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Dundee North End 1

Perhaps a draw was a fair result considering the endeavour and effort from both teams who also played some great football however it was Roselea who had the upperhand in chances terms and Fotheringham in the away goal had a great game.

The win leaves both sides further adrift from leaders Violet who despite losing in a cup match at Fauldhouse would have liked the news from  Broomfield Park. Roselea are still four points behind Violet who now have 2 games in hand and it will take a massive failure from them to blow the League at this stage.

Match Sponsors, Brian Church and the Golf Inn both chose Craig Anderson as their man of the match.

Roselea take a break from League action and travel to Carnoustie to face them in the 2nd Round of the GA Cup. Calum Watson will face his old side as he is currently on loan at Carnoustie from Cove Rangers. The match kicks off at 1.45pm and is played to a finish.
