FORFAR WEST END v MONTROSE ROSELEA

McBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION
SAT OCT 6th 2012

Roselea travelled to Strathmore Park, Forfar to meet old acquaintances West End for the first time in 3 years following the 1-year abeyance of the Forfar side last season. The clubs have had many ding dong encounters over the years and this was expected to be the same with both sides having taken maximum points from their opening League games. Roselea travelled with a host of problems on the personnel front. Out was the injured Ryan Taylor with Danny Ross, Jo Reoch, Michael Cruickshank and Stewart Fletcher missing for a variety of reasons. On the plus side Ross Mcleod returned between the sticks. On a glorious October day both teams took to the pitch anticipating a good match in front of a healthy crowd.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, Whyte, Collier, Allan, Urquhart, Rae, Anderson, Milne, Kennedy & Watson. Subs: Riach, Brand & Craig.

Roselea started well and forced a couple of early corners that West End did not deal with very well however they survived the early onslaught and took the lead in the 3rd minute. The keeper threw the ball to their left back and his long ball was picked up by COX who drove on and slid the ball under the advancing Mcleod.

There was a further blow for Roselea when Calum Watson had to leave the field after a heavy challenge from Garrick on 7 minutes. He was duly replaced by Chris Milne.

Roselea had another couple of chances and again it was corners that were giving West End trouble. Whyte went close with a header in 10 minutes then on 15 minutes Rae played a short ball to Riach who sent in a dangerous cross that Allan just failed to get a touch on.

Roselea had a let off in 20 minutes when this time Mcleod failed to connect fully with a punch on a corner and although Black headed goalwards a foul had already been called. West Ends centre half was lucky not to be carded for a bad foul on Collier in 24 minutes.

Roselea had a let off on the half hour mark when Scott knocked home from close range after the ball was struck across the goalmouth but was correctly given offside.

In 37 minutes a flighted Kennedy free kick was knocked down by Anderson and Rae shot just over the bar. Two minutes later another Kennedy free kick was headed towards the corner of the net but the home keeper saved well. On 42 minutes Anderson tried a cross field pass but found a man in blue, Garrick drifted forward and headed just over with Roselea failing to track back.

Half Time: Forfar West End 1 Montrose Roselea 0

Roselea had yet another chance from a set piece 5 minutes into the second half when another great ball from Kennedy was headed back across goal by Collier and Whyte was agonisingly close to getting the smallest of touches that would have sent the ball into the net.

Roselea fell further behind in the 58th minute. Roselea claimed offside against Darren SCOTT who checked inside and fired the ball against Allan who could do little to prevent the ball hitting his hand and the ball seemed to be off target. Scott tucked the penalty away to the keepers right hand side with Mcleods despairing dive a valiant effort to save.

Roselea plugged away Collier came close again hitting a shot on the spin which was blocked on the line. Roselea Player Manager Ralph Brand replaced Riach with 20 minutes remaining and was soon involved by challenging the keeper who dropped the ball at the feet of Collier who again saw his shot cleared off the line.

Roselea finally got the goal their play deserved although it came very late. Brand flicked on a ball played into the box and Paul WHYTE finished well from close range. Roselea threw everything forward and as so often happens the ball broke to SCOTT just over the half way line and he took off driving into the box and capped a great win for the home side.

Full Time: Forfar West End 3 Montrose Roselea 1

Referee: Mike Roncone

This was a sore one for Roselea to take with an already depleted squad the loss of Calum Watson early on in the game made things harder. The home side were well organised however Roselea matched them all over the park. Perhaps the added experience of Garrick and Tinley in midfield was the main difference between the teams. Roselea will now need to regroup before the equally tough game at East Craigie on Sat Oct 13th . Hopefully the squad will be boosted with the return of some of the missing players.

MONTROSE ROSELEA v COUPAR ANGUS

McBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISION

SAT SEPT 29th 2012

Roselea faced Coupar Angus in their 4th East Region North Division match on Saturday. Having won their first 3 games and facing the team who were bottom having had a difficult start to the season 3 points were expected.  Roselea had goalkeeper Ross Mcleod at a wedding so 17 year old Dean Easton from Montrose FC was drafted in as cover. Ryan Taylor was sidelined through injury and now has a date for his knee scan. Robert Urquhart also missed out due to a slight injury. Eric Watson returned to Cove Rangers for their Scottish Cup tie having played two games to regain his fitness. Colin Kennedy and Graeme Allan both returned for the home side returning from work and honeymoon commitments

Roselea: Easton, P Taylor, Whyte, Reoch, Cruickshank, Rae, Anderson, Riach, Fletcher, Collier & Watson. Subs: Allan, Milne, Ross, Kennedy & Urquhart.

Roselea started the match with a fairly stiff breeze at their backs as they shot towards St Cyrus. Roselea as expected started on the front foot and created a chance in 4 minutes when Riach played Collier in and after he rounded the keeper he saw his shot cleared off the line by Conway. It was not long until the home side took the lead and they did so two minutes later. Riach played a great ball over the top and a well timed run by RAE saw him in space and he lifted the ball over the advancing Mackie and into the net from 16 yards.

Cruickshank had a firm shot from 25 yards out in 15 minutes but Mackie was well positioned and held well. Fletcher then just failed to connect with a deep Watson cross as the home side piled the pressure on.

Roselea doubled their lead in 19 minutes when Calum WATSON claimed a slight touch on a Cruickshank inswinging corner with the keeper unable to connect.

Roselea had a flurry of chances a minute later when Whyte had a header saved, followed by Collier being thwarted by Mackie again then Guthrie almost out the ball past his own keeper.

Roselea go four up in 24 minutes with a great goal from a free kick. Calum Watson was fouled around 30 yards out and FLETCHER stepped up and sent a great curling ball into the top corner with Mackie struggling to get near to the ball.

Collier was not getting things his own way and once again a chance passed him by when he cut inside onto a good position but couldn’t get enough power to beat Mackie at the near post. COLLIER was finally rewarded for his hard work when he finished better from an Anderson cut back in 41 minutes.

Scrimegour of Coupar Angus was booked for a crude foul on Riach as the half drew to a close.

Half Time Roselea 4 Coupar Angus 0

Roselea made two changes at the half time break with Fletcher & Reoch being replaced by Kennedy & Allan.

Roselea took some time to get going and it wasn’t until the 55th minute that normal service resumed. Collier again looked to have done everything correct but with Mackie already on the deck to save his shot he couldn’t find a way past him and the keeper saved. Roselea then managed to miss a host of chances with several players passing up easy goal scoring opportunities.

Roselea made an enforced change when an injury to Paul Taylor saw Chris Milne making a return to the fold in 68 minutes.

Roselea were totally dominating and CRUICKSHANK added to the tally in 69 minutes with goal number 5 having missed a one on one chance seconds before. He picked up a Riach cross which was dummied by Watson and took a touch to steady himself before drilling home.

ANDERSON made it six for Roselea in 70 minutes when he prodded home a corner which Mackie came to collect and dropped at the midfielder’s feet.

Roselea were going nap and RAE added to the tally when he picked up a through ball from Riach and danced his way into the box before slotting home in 76 minutes.

In 83 minutes WATSON grabbed his second of the day when he ran in with Coupar Angus appealing for offside and drilled a low shot into the corner of the net.

WATSON then completed his hatrick in the final minute with the Coupar Angus side happy to hear the referee blow for full time.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 9 Coupar Angus 0

Referee- Scott Leslie

It is hard to believe that Roselea made hard work of this in the second half despite having a four goal cushion and passed up a host of chances that could have seen the final score doubled against their luckless visitors. It can sometimes be hard to keep the momentum going when they were so far ahead. The win keeps Roselea ahead in first place and sets them up nicely for a tricky double header away to both Forfar West End on the 6th Oct then East Craigie on the 13th. Both sides have started well and it will be a big test for the Broomfield Park side.

The 16th Roselea Ryder Cup will take place at Kirriemuir Golf Club on Sunday 30th Sept. The club side will be captained by Rookie Paul Whyte who will take on the vastly experienced Kes "5 Wood" Young from the Golf Inn side. This will promise to be a cracking match to set the day off and there will no doubt be many other battles and stories to tell.

Arniston Rangers progressed to the Second Round of the East of Scotland Cup as Roselea suffered penalty kicks woe. Stewart Fletcher scored for Roselea in 20 minutes with a near post shot with their keeper expecting a cut back but the away side equalised mid way through the second half forced the match into penalty kicks.

Calum Watson & James Collier both missed before Scott Riach kept Roselea in it then Eric Watson's firmly struck kick was well saved by the Arniston keeper to send them through.

Although Roselea played well they failed to take the chances and this forced the penalty kick situation that the home team normally do well in. Well done to Arniston and on passing their bus on the way home it looked like they were having a good time.

Apologies for lack of full match report this week due to Match Reporter being unavailable and the Dictaphone refusing to work for the back up!! Hopefully we will be able to update this with a mini report and line up etc
