ABERDEEN EAST END v MONTROSE ROSELEA

SCOTTISH CUP 3RD ROUND REPLAY

SAT NOV 30TH 2013

Roselea travelled to New Advocates Park to face East End in a Scottish Cup 3rd Round Replay. The teams drew 2-2 at Broomfield Park in a game which Roselea didn’t seem to get going in. There was some reshuffling to be done by Ralph Brand with Jo Reoch and Stewart Fletcher being unavailable from the previous starting line up. They were also without James Collier, Connor Gammie & Stuart Richardson. On the plus side both Calum Rae who returned from injury and Danny Ross (suspension) both came back into the side with Aaron Thomson dropping to the subs bench. New signing 24 year old Venezualan Carlos Silva was also on the subs bench.

New Advocates Park, which lies in the shadows of Pittodrie Stadium was in good condition after being rolled and there was little wind which is unusual at the location. Roselea last played on the sloped pitch in 1999 when they drew 1-1 in the 1st Round before heading to the quarter finals. In attendance was Roselea legend Martin Christie who now lives in the Granite City.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte, Cruickshank, Anderson, Rae, Ross, Duncan Reid, Dale Reid & Watson. Subs: Thomson, Rausch, Silva, Brand & Kerrigan.

Roselea got off to the best possible start with a goal within the first 60 seconds. Dale REID sent a wonderful 25 yard volley into the corner of the net after Watson closed down the East End defence.

East End had their first chance on 10 minutes when Johnstone sent a volley just wide of the post.

Roselea were on top and it was no surprise that they doubled their lead in 11 minutes. Rae sent in a very dangerous inswinging corner which home keeper McGraw didn’t deal with and Paul WHYTE got the final touch as the ball went in off the far post.

The game settled down after the explosive start and East End managed to get a couple of shots away with Fraser testing Mcleod on a couple of occasions.

Dale Reid broke away in 25 minutes but he shot high over the bar. Reid then created another chance for strike partner Watson as he fought for the ball in the corner before passing to Rae. Rae crossed into the box and Watson chested the ball down before his shot found the outside of the post. There was to be no further goalmouth action in the first half and it was a confident Roselea side who made their way in at half time.

Half Time: Aberdeen East End 0 Montrose Roselea 2

Early on in the second half Johnston of East End broke into the Roselea penalty area but Mcleod had spotted the danger and was out quickly to block.

Watson was then put in at the other end and only a great block from keeper McGraw stopped Roselea from securing a fourth round spot.

East End again tested Mcleod when substitute Rose picked up a throw in and shot from a tight angle only for the keeper to block and Paul Whyte cleared the lines.

Midway through the second half Dale Reid had a great chance to put the tie beyond reach when Duncan Reid layed the ball back to him and his shot hot the inside of the post before running along the line to safety.

East End were having the major share of the possession shooting down the slope but Roselea defended strongly and limited the chances of letting East End back into the game.

Roselea made a change on 80 minutes with Carlos Silva replacing Duncan Reid. Mcleod made a fine double stop in 85 minutes when he first saved Reid’s shot from the edge of the box and also blocked the follow up effort from Fraser.

Full Time: Aberdeen East End 0 Montrose Roselea 2

After the disappointing performance at home this was a thoroughly well deserved win and a great show from the first minute to the last. After a dream start with the early goal the team were determined to make it through to the 4th Round. The introduction of Ross and Rae in midfield created the extra drive in the middle of the park with the back four and Ross Mcleod also worthy of a mention for their determination not to lose a goal.

Roselea remain on cup duty this weekend with Blairgowrie visiting in the first round of the GA Cup. After reaching the final last year, Roselea will look to try and go one better in the competition this time round. Kick off is at 1.45pm.

MONTROSE ROSELEA v ABERDEEN EAST END

SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP

SAT NOV 23rd 2013

Roselea faced Aberdeen East End at Broomfield Park in the 3rd Round of the Junior Cup. The sides last met in 1999 when Roselea went on to beat their opponents after a draw in Aberdeen and then reached the quarter finals.

Roselea still had selection problems with James Collier on Holiday, Calum Rae injured and Danny Ross suspended however on the plus side Paul Taylor, Connor Gammie & Michael Cruickshank returned from holiday and in a surprise inclusion Jo Reoch started the game in midfield.

The overnight frost had all but departed Broomfield and the game kicked off in perfect conditions albeit the low winter sun would affect the visiting keeper in the second half.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Thomson, Whyte, Riach, Anderson, Reoch, Cruickshank, Watson & Fletcher. Subs: Gammie, Rausch, Richardson, Duncan Reid & Dale Reid

Roselea kicked off facing into an ever lowering sun and in three minutes they almost lost the services of Ryan Taylor after he fell to a late tackle from Ryan Smith. He managed to continue after treatment and Smith somehow escaped a booking.

Roselea unexpectedly fell behind to a well taken goal in 5 minutes. Despite having chances to clear the ball eventually fell FRASER who shot home from 12 yards to give East End a dream start.

Roselea battled back and in 9 minutes Watson chested the ball from a throw in into the path of Reoch but he couldn’t direct his shot on target.

There was a let off for Roselea in 12 minutes when Fraser again wriggled away from Thomson in the box and only a great save from Mcleod allowed Roselea to stay just one behind.

There was another chance for Roselea to equalise when Watson pulled down a free kick in the box and swivelled before shooting into the hands of a well placed McGraw in the East End goal. Roselea had two good chances to score again on 23 minutes with the best coming as Watson rounded the keeper but Coyle got back to tackle and put the ball behind for a corner.

Roselea’s endeavour finally paid off in 25 minutes when Reoch won a tackle in midfield which set Fletcher away and he played a lovely weighted ball into the path of WATSON who rifled home from 20 yards at the angle.

In 29 minutes the plucky East End side were in no mood to stand down and when REID was allowed too much space on Roselea’s left hand side he picked out the top corner with a great strike from 25 yards. Coyle of East End was lucky to escape with a booking in 34 minutes when he pulled the breaking Fletcher to the ground as he broke away.

As the half drew to a close there were three more bookings for East End as they tried to frustrate a very rattled Roselea side.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Aberdeen East End 2

East End set themselves up against a very nasty low sun with the keeper McGraw definitely needing his cap to keep the sun at bay.

Roselea made a change with Dale Reid replacing Fletcher and shortly afterwards Richardson replaced Thomson.

It was a positive Roselea side who came out and Whyte started the half by playing a great ball in behind Nacef to find Cruickshank who drove to the byeline however his cutback was put behind for a corner.

Roselea got back on level terms in the 52nd minutes. A long ball caught out the East End defence and Mctavish tried to head back his keeper it was music to Calum Watsons ears as he blocked the keepers clearance, Scott RIACH took advantage to volley home from 8 yards.

In 60 minutes Roselea were looking lively and Watsons cross was heading towards the head of Dale Reid but McTavish managed to get a touch and clear the ball from danger.

East End were reduced to ten men in 70 minutes when Danny Thomson was shown a second yellow for a foul and headed for an early bath.

Duncan Reid replaced Riach in 75 minutes and almost made an impact with a great run but couldn’t get the ball into a position to strike with his favoured left foot. Paul Whyte picked up Roselea’s second booking of the day with a late tackle on Fraser with Mcleod saving comfortably from the free kick.

Roselea had one last chance against the ten men with Watson’s cross being headed towards the corner of the net but McGraw pulled off a great save to take the tie to a replay.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 2 Aberdeen East End 2

Roselea can have no complaints with the scoreline as their performance did not merit an easy passage into the 4th Round. It seemed as if too many players were uncomfortable on the ball and possession was given up far too easily. They will get a second chance however despite East Ends lowly position in the North Superleague they showed enough to make sure that next week will not be an easy ride. Roselea will run a club bus with supporters welcome to travel. It is expected to leave the Golf Inn at 11.15am with Kick off at 1.45pm

SET PIECES COST ROSELEA

DALKEITH THISTLE v MONTROSE ROSELEA

McBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE
SAT NOV 16
th 2013

Roselea headed over the Forth Bridge to Dalkeith with the usual selection problems they have been plagued with all season. In addition to Jo Reoch (injured) and James Collier (holiday) Stuart Richardson (broken nose), Paul Taylor, Michael Cruickshank & Gammie (work) and Danny Ross suspended the squad was yet again threadbare.

Dalkeith sat 6th in the table with 17 points having played one more game than Roselea who sit on 9 points. The visitors were looking for a win to take them out the bottom quartile of the table. After a break of three weeks due to Scottish Cup duty this would be their first League game for several weeks with the 3rd Round tie against Aberdeen East End coming up on Sat 23rd.

Roselea: Mcleod, Richardson, Thompson, Whyte, R.Taylor, Riach, Anderson, Rausch, Duncan Reid, Fletcher, Watson. Subs: Dale Reid, Jo Reoch

Dalkeith Thistle: Kesson, Paterson, Main, Gavin, Liddle, Murray, Morris, Haynes, Pusledzki, Waters. Subs: Flynn, Hunter, Lally, McNaughton, Young.

There was an early chance for Roselea after 3 minutes when Duncan Reid robbed a dalkieth  player in the middle of the park and went on a run past the last man and then squared it for Calum Watson but the ball did not settle for him to shoot.

Dalkeith then got a corner after four minutes. They took the corner short and then at the edge of the box MORRIS hit it down and it ended in the net with Mcleod unsighted.

Stuart Richardson who was playing with his broken nose then got hit in the face by the ball and while he was receiving treatment Taylor had a header which came close to making it 2-0 to dalkeith. Stuart Richardson returned to the park.

Dalkeith Thistle were then awarded a penalty for a adjudged handball by Aaron Thompson who could do little to prevent the ball hitting his hand. HAYNES took the penalty and sent McLeod the wrong way. 2-0 to Dalkeith Thistle.

There was another chance for Roselea to get back into the game on 21 minutes break from Calum Watson out left, he cuts inside and it bobbled and it went harmlessley over the bar.

On 23 minutes Jordon Rausch broke forward and then Calum Watson flicked it over and Rausch was brought down and that was the 3rd yellow card for a Dalkeith player.

Roselea had a handball claim which was denied on 30 minutes when Paul Whytes free kick looked to have hit a Dalkeith arm which looked familiar to Dalkeith’s penalty that was given.

Haynes had a chance to put Dalkeith three ahead when he tried to chip McLeod but it went narrowly over.

Rausch had a chance on 40 minutes when he collected the ball in the centre of the park and decided to have a hit which went past the post.

Half Time: Dalkeith Thistle 2-0 Montrose Roselea

First chance of the half was from Dalkeiths Pusledzki when he cut in from the left and was about to shoot when Paul Whyte tackled him and the ball went out for a corner.

56 minutes played and it became 3-0 to Dalkeith when a corner was swung in too far and the cross came back in and LIDDLE headed it in from close range back across the Roselea rearguard and into the net.

Great chance for Roselea on the hour mark when Calum Watson was played through and he shrugged of a Dalkeith challenge and the keeper made himself big and saved well.

A dangerous ball across the roselea box from a Dalkeith free-kick on 65 minutes and Ross Mcleod saved and threw it out to Rausch who made a good run up the park and then was fouled by Taylor who was booked. Craig Anderson took the free kick but yet again found the Dalkeith wall.

67 minutes and Roselea get what turned out to be a consolation when Taylor  whipped in a great free-kick and everybody missed it but RICHARDSON was at the back post and tapped it in to make it Dalkeith 3-1 Montrose Roselea.

On the 72nd minute Riach put in a cross to Watson who was offside.

On 82 minutes Calum Watson was shown a second yellow card when a long ball was sent and Watson and the Dalkeith keeper collided and Watson was debatably sent off.

Full Time: Dalkeith Thistle 3-1 Montrose Roselea

Roselea can have no complaints about the result as they threw away three easily preventable goals from set pieces and after losing two early goals they were always chasing the game. On the plus side it was another of the long trips over the Forth out of the way and another trip to one of the top half sides ticked off as well. The position with the squad was also a tough factor but the players will need to pick themselves up for next weeks Scottish Cup 3rd Round tie with Aberdeen East End. The match kicks off at 1.45pm and Hospitality places are available by contacting Roy Gill on 07908763219.

ROSELEA THROUGH TO 3rd ROND

MONTROSE ROSELEA v EAST KILBRIDE THISTLE
Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round Replay
Sat Nov 9th 2013

Roselea took East Kilbride Thistle back to Broomfield Park following their 1-1 draw the previous week. The match was fortunate to be played with the Show park very heavy with patches of water on most of the surface. Broomfield Park was unlikely to be anything like the condition of the previous week and a much different style of game was expected.

Roselea signed former player Danny Ross on the eve of the game as he returned from ACSC who top the Midlands Premier Amateur League and Stuart Richardson & Stewart Fletcher were both available having missed the first game. Missing were Jo Reoch & Calum Rae who were carrying injuries and James Collier was still unavailable. Manager Ralph Brand missed his first competitive match in 5 seasons as he took part in the Glen Clova Half Marathon so Steve Kerrigan took charge of the team. East Kilbride travelled full of spirit considering they had lost all their previous matches this season however with new Manager Alan Wardlaw coming in it was almost a new team which lined up in the first game. The winners had the added incentive of a home tie with Aberdeen East End on Sat Nov 23rd awaiting.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte, Richardson, Duncan Reid, Anderson, Ross, Cruickshank, Dale Reid & Watson. Subs: Rausch, Thomson, Gammie, Fletcher

Broomfield Park was in great condition but and ever rising bitterly cold wind was going to make things very difficult for spectators and a low November sun would make it hard for keepers.

Of the two teams Roselea started sprightly and created a couple of good openings in the first ten minutes. In 4 minutes Anderson played a one-two with Watson with a great bursting run but didn’t seem to get enough on his shot and Aitken in the visitors goal did well to block. A minute later there was another skirmish in the Thistle box but when his first shot was blocked by a defender Dale Reid hit another shot which seemed to hit is team-mate Watson.

East Kilbrides no 7 was lucky to stay on the field after an off the ball fracas with Ryan Taylor in 9 minutes.

Cruickshank sent in a great free kick in 14 minutes but it was just out of reach for a home attacker then Dale Reid almost made an opening with a nice flick but Butler got back to tackle well.

There was controversy in 20 minutes when Danny Ross tackled Mackey of the visitors. A melee ensued with the Thistle player clearly punching Ross on the ground. The referee showed both players a red card but perhaps the yellow variety might have been suffice.

In 25 minutes Watson in typical style closed down the keeper and was unlucky to see his block going away from the goal.

Duncan Reid sent in a free kick which the excellent Butler again intercepted.

East Kilbride did not make much impression in the first half with only a header from Boyle giving Mcleod anything to do.

Roselea had one last chance in the first period when Cruickshank sent in a low swinging free kick and when a defender missed the ball it just sneaked past the post.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 0 East Kilbride Thistle 0

Thistle had the wind advantage in the second half and when Whyte fouled Boyle, Cruickshank had to clear from the free kick.

In 54 minutes Roselea had the best chance of the game. Ryan Taylor took off up the left hand side skipping past a couple of challenges and crossed to Duncan Reid who nodded the ball into the path of the incoming Whyte who volleyed over from 6 yards out.

In 58 minutes following a challenge at a corner Stuart Richardson had to leave the field of play when he broke his nose following a late challenge at a corner. He was replaced by Arron Thomson.

Roselea made another change in 70 minutes with Stewart Fletcher replacing Duncan Reid who had taken a heavy knock.

The next phase of the game was marred with late and off the ball tackles with Prete of the away side not being the most popular with the home support. There were several tackles worthy of a booking before referee Robertson showed a red card to Dallas in 79 minutes for a kick at Anderson.

Roselea started to press for the winner however there was a scare near the end when Cruickshank appeared to be fouled but the referee played on and saw Thistle four on one but Thomson did well to track back and make a great tackle to break play up.

Full Time; Montrose Roselea 0 East Kilbride Thistle 0 (Roselea win 3-1 on Penalties)

Penalty kicks prevailed and Paul Whyte was first up. Somehow he managed to loop the ball over the keeper after slipping and striking the ball with both feet! Ross Mcleod saved the first Thistle kick then Fletcher scored for Roselea. East Kilbride scored with their second then Watson slotted home. Butler missed for East Kilbride when he struck the bar then Cruickshank sent the ball high over the bar. It was Mcleod who saved Kilbrides fourth to send Roselea into Round 3 with a home tie against Aberdeen East End on Nov 23rd.

East Kilbride Thistle came with a game plan to disrupt the play and it worked a treat for them. Roselea could not get their normal game going and struggled to create enough chances and could not finish the few that came along. At the end of the day they are through to Round three and have a great chance to progress past the Festive period with a kind draw. This week it is back to League business with another trip over the Forth to Dalkeith. A club bus will leave the Golf Inn at 10.30am supporters welcome but please contact a club official to keep numbers in check.
