PAIN AT WAROUT FOR THE LEA

Posted by Roy Gill at May 9, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

GLENROTHES V MONTROSE ROSELEA

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT MAY 10TH 2014

Roselea travelled to the Warout Stadium in Glenrothes in their fifth last Premier League match of the season. They were looking for eight points to guarantee safety however a couple of wins might still be enough depending on other results. The team were buoyed by their Houdini act the previous Saturday when two late goals snatched a point from champions elect Penicuik Athletic.

Calum Watson was again sidelined by injury but Calum Rae came back into the squad and Paul Whyte returned having missed the previous week. Stuart Richardson missed out through work.

Roselea had beaten Glenrothes 2-0 at Montrose with goals from Calum Watson and Dale Reid however the Fife side were in a rich vein of form and had only been beaten once at home all season. The pitch was looking slightly damp from some heavy overnight rain and looked like it would sap the players energy.

Roselea: Mcleod, Rae, R Taylor, Thomson. Whyte, Ross, Collier, Anderson, Reoch, Cruickshank & Reid. Subs: P Taylor, C Taylor, Brand & Kerrigan.

In the opening stages there was a good appeal from Roselea from a handball outside the box by home keeper Kevin Smith but it was difficult for the referee to judge from the halfway line.

Martin then had a strike at the other end but Mcleod was well positioned to save.

Roselea were looking slack all over the pitch and it was not a surprise when they fell 1-0 behind in 18 minutes. Kinness got past Ryan Taylor to the bye-line and cut back for the unmarked SIMPSON to fire home from 15 yards despite the efforts of Mcleod.

In 24 minutes Thomson was caught at the wrong side of Martin who broke into the Roselea box but Mcleod did well to come out and block for a corner. A minute later right winger Napier cut inside and his shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Roselea attacked themselves in 25 minutes and Ross swung in a dangerous ball which Smith did well to save at the far post with Cruickshank lurking.

Roselea were coming into things after a sluggish start and Reoch show great determination to drive into the box from the wide right area but a great tackle from Pearson turned the ball behind for a corner.

Roselea had another chance on the half hour mark when Ross flicked a free kick on to Reid and again only a brilliant tackle again prevented a chance.

Glenrothes had another chance when the ball was squared to Napier but he shot wildly over. In 39 minutes the home side went two in front with a very soft goal from a Roselea perspective when Martin found himself in acres of space in the Roselea box and layed the ball of to Aidan ANDERSON who shot home easily from 12 yards.

Roselea were looking down and out having been on the end of a good first half performance from the home side but go an instant pick me up when COLLIER headed home an inswinging Cruickshank cross in the 40th minute.

Roselea almost finished the half on a low when Whyte conceded a free kick and when the ball came in only a great save from Mcleod to tip Pearsons header away kept them in it.

Half Time: Glenrothes 2 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea started the second half a little bit slack and Ryan Taylor did well to redeem himself when he gifted the ball to Martin with a slack pass across his own 18 yard box and managed to get a good tackle in.

There was a let off for Roselea in 52 minutes when Martin found himself in space but somehow managed to screw the ball wide of the post with Mcleod looking stranded.

In 55 minutes Ross and Reid combined well for Roselea with the former having a good shot from the edge of the area which tested Smith as it bobbled up to him.

Roselea had a great chance in 58 minutes when Cruickshank sent in a great ball from the right hand side and although Ross connected well with his left foot the ball fell just wide of the post.

The game was in the balance and Martin drew Mcleod out of his goals and along the byeline before finding space to shoot from a narrow angle which Rae had to head off the line.

Reid had two similar chances in 69 and 71 minutes when his pace took him through but on both occasions he couldn’t finish with his second effort bringing out a great save and corner from Smith.

Roselea seemed to be looking the better and fitter side as the game entered its final stages. Collier broke on the right only to see his cross cut out by Grierson who looked a class act at the back for the homesters.

Roselea made a change in 81 minutes with Paul Taylor coming on for Thomson who had a great game.

There was a big claim for a handball when Whyte and Collier both challenged for a cross ball but with home keeper Smith smothering the referee did not see it the same way.

Roselea looked to have snatched another draw from the jaws of defeat when Whyte smashed a great header goalwards from a Reoch cross but home keeper Smith made a brilliant save and turned the ball behind from the top left corner.

Glenrothes sub Simpson was lucky not to see red with a very reckless two footed tackle which only warranted a yellow from the official.

Roselea had another couple of chances as they finished the stronger side fitness wise and a draw would have been a fair result.

Full Time: Glenrothes 2 Montrose Roselea 1

After a very stagnant first half where the formation seemed to suit Glenrothes more the second half was a totally different half with Roselea well on top. The damage had been done and there were a few close calls towards the end but Lady Luck had deserted Roselea. Elsewhere Dundee Violet and Kirrie Thistle had great wins at Bathgate and Kinnoull which turned things in Violets favour who are now 5 points ahead although Roselea have two games in hand. The sides will meet at Glenesk Park, Dundee on Weds May 14th with a 7pm KO. This match may be the decider of who stays up and who goes down. A draw may suit Violet better but there is still much to play for in the survival quest. On Sat 17th Roselea travel to bottom team Pumpherston and unfortunately there is no room on the club bus for supporters. KO is 2.30pm.

ROSELEA GO DOWN NARROWLY AT OAKLEY

Posted by Roy Gill at Apr 25, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

OAKLEY UTD v MONTROSE ROSELEA
McBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE
SAT APRIL 26TH 2014 KO 2.30pm

Roselea headed to Blairwood Park in Fife to face Oakley Utd, yet another team who fought back to turn around a Roselea lead earlier in the season. Roselea travelled without Stuart Richardson, Craig Taylor & Arron Thomson and James Collier served the last match of his 3 game suspension. Calum Rae and Calum Watson were both out injured meaning the only outfield subs were Ralph Brand and Steve Kerrigan. Roselea pulled in ex Montrose FC Manager Steven Tweed as a Trialist. The 41 year old ex Hibs, Dundee, Duisburg and Scotland B cap had not played since 2011 when he turned out for Broughty Athletic.

Oakley were sitting 2nd in the Premier League with an outside chance of making one of the two automatic promotion places having played more games than those around them and only two games to play. Roselea were sitting 5th bottom and need around 6 points from their last 7 games to secure Premier league status.

Blairwood Park was very bumpy and although the overnight rain had helped it the players were going to have a tough afternoon keeping the ball under control.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte. Tweed, Riach, Anderson, Ross, Reoch, Cruickshank & Reid. Subs: Brand, Kerrigan & Gray.

Oakley had two early shots with Mcleod having to be alert and he did well under pressure to hold on both occasions within the first five minutes.

Roselea were under pressure at the start and Fraser crossed for danger man Scarborough who headed wide.

In 15 minutes Whyte had a great block in the box as Scarborough was about to shoot as he threw himself into the tackle.

Roselea were starting to come into the game and some good pressing of the ball saw them create their first chance in 19 minutes. Danny Ross played Dale Reid in down the right and after he had twisted and turned in the box his shot was blocked behind for a corner. Cruickshank took the corner but he could not clear the man at the front post who headed the ball as far as Danny Ross and his shot went wide with keeper Burgess confident it was off target.

In 25 minutes Reid lost possession on the half way line and allowed Allan to tear down the wing and his cross almost deceived Mcleod as it just cleared the far post.

In 29 minutes Kevin Fotheringham sent in a dangerous free kick which nobody took control of and a slight touch from an Oakley player saw the ball just sneak past the post.

There were limited chances at either end following this Scarborough looking offside but his toe poke slipped wide of the post again.

Half Time: Oakley Utd 0 Montrose Roselea 0

There was an early let off in the second half when Whyte missed the ball allowing Scarborough in but Mcleod blocked and then also claimed the loose ball as well.

There was a second let off for Roselea in 50 minutes when Oakley right back Conners cut inside then blasted over the bar with his right foot when he should have hit the target.

In 53 minutes danger man Scarborough broke away despite looking offside and Tweed had to take a booking for bringing him down right on the edge of the area. Fotheringham lined up to take the kick but Fraser struck a great ball which luckily came off the wall with it looking netbound.

In 60 minutes Roselea had a great chance when Reids pace took him away from Walker and he cut the ball into the path of Riach who shot early and dragged the ball wide of the post.

Oakley then had a chance in 61 minutes when a cross came in and Scarborough scooped over from 3 yards out with claims for a corner with the ref awarding Roselea a bye kick. Substitute Lee Dair then curled in a shot which might have been going wide but Mcleod made sure with a great tip round the post for a corner.

Roselea then had a great chance in 70 minutes when Paul Taylor flighted a ball through to Dale Reid who held off a challenge from Scott Walker and from 12 yards he blasted the ball high towards the net but somehow the ball hit home keeper Burgess’s elbow and over the top for a corner. Whyte then struck a volley from the edge of the box but it was easily dealt with by Burgess.

Roselea had defended well with Tweeds experience helping greatly however all the hard work was undone in 73 minutes when a lapse saw Bratchie cross for the man who looked most likely to score Charlie SCARBOROUGH and he headed home from close range with a good header.

Reid then had a similar chance to his first one when he shot from a tighter angle and yet again Burgess blocked well.

Roselea made a change in 80 minutes when Brand replaced Paul Taylor who had picked up a knock.

Oakley saw out the match to the end with no further chances for either side.

Final Score: Oakley Utd 1 Montrose Roselea 0

This defeat ends Roselea’s five match unbeaten run however they probably deserved a draw from the match. The difference between sides was probably the goal scorer Scarborough who looked a threat any time he got on the ball. Roselea as ever worked hard throughout the game and a special thanks goes out to Steven Tweed for appearing at short notice and he had a great game using all his experience to pull him through.

Results elsewhere meant Roselea kept pace with the bottom pack with Kirrie Thistle, Pumperston and Livingston Utd all losing however Kirkcaldy won 2-0 at Violet which means they now have a 9 point advantage over Roselea who have 6 games in hand. Roselea face a tough task at home to Penicuik who are one of the sides who look most likely to win the Title. Kick Off at Broomfield Park is at 2.30pm. Roselea’s upcoming fixtures are Sat May 10th Glenrothes (A), Weds May 14th Dundee Violet (A) and Sat May 17th Pumpherston (A).

GREAT WIN FOR THE LEA

Posted by Roy Gill at Apr 18, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V KINNOULL

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT APRIL 19TH 2014

Roselea faced Perth side Kinnoull in their latest East Premier League match as they continued their fight against relegation. The sides had met in February with Kinnoull coming out 4-1 victors which was Roselea’s heaviest defeat of the season. It was also a scoreline which perhaps flattered the home side with Roselea missing some great chances and Kinnoull pretty much taking all theirs.

Roselea had James Collier suspended, Paul Taylor working, Calum Rae out injured and although he was not fully fit Calum Watson took a seat on the bench. In came Jo Reoch who pulled out in the warm up against Bathgate when still suffering from Flu, Scott Riach also returned from work and Ross Mcleod came in for Josh Gray in the goals.

Broomfield Park was looking immaculate however the lack of rain meant that the surface was brick hard although pretty flat.

Roselea: Mcleod, Richardson, R Taylor, Whyte, Thomson, Ross, Anderson, Reoch, Riach, Cruickshank & Reid. Subs: Watson, C Taylor, Brand & Gray

Kinnoull started the brighter of the two teams and a well worked corner kick saw Norrie find the feet of Dodd at the edge of the box but his shot lacked the accuracy of his team mates ball and managed to shoot high and wide.

Roselea came close in 5 minutes when Cruickshank picked out a great run from Danny Ross however his touch just let him down in difficult circumstances.

Roselea then  forced a could of corners with Whyte and Richardson both getting on the end of them but were unable to find the target.

Kinnoull had a great chance to take the lead when Fertacz looking suspiciously offside broke free and only a great save from Mcleod prevented a certain goal. Mcleod then had another great save in 8 minutes when Dodd had a low shot turned round the post by the Roselea stopper.

After a fairly even and end to end opening Roselea took the lead from the penalty spot in 9 minutes. Ross slid in and sent Reid away into the box and was tripped and although he stumbled and got back to his feet referee Milne correctly awarded a penalty. Ryan TAYLOR who scored the previous week in the same minute against Bathgate stepped up again and although his strike was not as good as the previous week it still found the back of the net to give the home side a valuable lead.

In 15 minutes Whyte had a good header which seemed to come off the back of a Kinnoull defender but a goal kick was awarded.

Roselea were frustrated when Danny Ross was not allowed back onto the pitch following treatment of a head knock until played stopped with the referee insisting on checking for blood before he entered the field of play.

In 20 minutes Roselea were awarded a free kick when Riach was fouled as he released the ball however they would have preferred the advantage to have been played as Reid was free inside the 18 yard box.

There was a loud appeal for a Kinnoull penalty when Richardson dived to clear a cross but the referee adjudged that he had played the ball with his head and not his hand in 25 minutes.

Dale Reid’s pace was causing Kinnoull all sorts of problems and in 40 minutes he managed to get the better of Ritchie before rounding keeper Tough only to hit the side netting from the angle.

In 44 minutes Darren Taylor of Kinnoull had a snap volley just go over the top with Mcleod in control of the situation.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Kinnoull 0

In the opening minutes of the second half Reid and Riach were given as offside with the referee having a tough call with Reids pace and no Assistants to help.

Roselea were awarded a couple of foul with Whyte & Richardson both being bundled to the ground.

Roselea were awarded a free kick when Riach was bundled to the ground by Ritchie. Ryan Taylor took the kick from 25 yards out and although his shot was on target it was too direct to trouble Tough in the Kinnoull goal.

In 53 minutes a great bit of football from Roselea saw Reoch overlap and cross to the far post to Cruickshank who layed the ball into the path of Reid but the ball would not come down for him to shoot but he still won a corner.

Riach and Reoch both had strikes from 20 yards but neither could make any impact on the game.

Kinnoull had a couple of half hearted appeals for a penalty of their own but the referee was unfazed on both occasions.

In 75 minutes Roselea replaced Scott Riach who had an excellent game with Calum Watson.

Watson as usual was soon in the thick of the action and he found himself on the byeline with a narrow shooting angle having rounded the keeper but somehow Tough got the last word when he dived to parry the ball behind for a corner.

In 81 minutes a deep Anderson cross found Watson at the far post and from a narrow angle his header was somehow saved again although Kinnoull keeper Tough did not know much about it.

There was to be a couple of chances near the end of the 90 minutes with Watson and Reid both trying to get the game sealed but Tough was equal to the task. Roselea gave Manager Brand some hairy moments as they failed to get the ball into the far wide areas to run the clock down.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Kinnoull 0

After being beat 4-1 in Perth this was some revenge and a great result in the context of the League. Match Sponsors the Luther Boys chose Danny Ross as man of the match. With Violet drawing at Livingston Utd and Kirrie Thistle suffering their 9th defeat in a row at home to Faludhouse results meant that Roselea rose to the safety of 5th bottom. Kirkcaldy picked up a valuable point at home to Penicuik which means they are 6 points ahead of Roselea although they have played 6 games more. Next week Roselea travel to Oakley who took a 6-1 beating at Bathgate and there is a vital match with Kirkcaldy travelling to Dundee Violet.

ROSELEA & BATHGATE BATTLE IN THE WIND

Posted by Roy Gill at Apr 11, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v BATHGATE THISTLE

McBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT APRIL 12th  2014

Roselea faced Bathgate Thistle in their latest McBookie.com East Premier League match at Broomfield Park. The Creamery Park side were one time leaders however had slipped back to sixth place with only an outside chance of one of the two automatic promotion places although a play off place was still very much on the cards. Whilst in second place in Sept, Roselea had one of their most cruel defeats of the opening two months of the season when leading 2-1 with 5 minutes remaining the home side managed to bang in two late goals.

Roselea had some selection problems with James Collier suspended following his red card, Calum Watson doubtful through injury and Stuart Richardson, Scott Riach & Paul Taylor out through work. Goalkeeper Ross Mcleod returned from holiday however Ralph Brand stuck with youngster Josh Gray who had done well in his previous two games. Craig Anderson made a welcome return to the side after injury & suspension and after Jo Reoch declared himself unfit after a week of flu Ralph Brand made a surprise start in the side. Merpro player Euan Duff was welcomed along as a trialist for the game. Broomfield Park was starting to show the fruits of a mild winter with the surface looking green and as good as could be at this time of the year.

Roselea: Gray, Richardson, R Taylor, Whyte, Thomson, Anderson, Ross, Brand, Rae, Cruickshank & Reid. Subs: Watson, C Taylor, Duff, Mcleod & Kerrigan.

Broomfield was in full flow with the wind blowing diagonal towards the beach across the pitch.

In 5 minutes Bathgate with the wind slightly in their favour almost caught Roselea out when Lurinsky almost beat the offside trap but his touch let him down and the ball ran out of play.

Roselea took the lead in 8 minutes from the penalty spot. Roselea broke up the right and Anderson spotted a great run from Reid which saw him brought down by Robinson. After a booking for the defender and several replacings of the ball due to the wind Ryan TAYLOR was calm enough to slot the ball past keeper Reid into the corner of the net with the stopper almost getting to the ball however it was a well struck ball under severe pressure.

In 12 minutes there was a massive let off for the home team when Baird hit a smacking left foot drive off the underside of the bar from 25 yards and when the rebound fell to Swan it was only a great interception from Richardson that prevented a goal.

Roselea took a 2-0 lead in 16 minutes. A free kick was awarded and Calum Rae sent in a great ball which was only cleared as far as Brand and his scuffed shot was slammed home by Dale REID at the far post with some fears about offside.

Roselea were buoyant and in a great move up the left hand side Cruickshank took on three players before squaring to Reid who got the better of Robinson before the ball broke kindly to Welsh to clear for Bathgate.

In 18 minutes another Roselea free kick as Bathgate were getting ragged saw Taylor and Cruickshank combine to cross for Whyte to head narrowly wide.

Bathgate got a goal back in 28 minutes when after a bit of pressure a mix up between keeper Gray and Rae saw JACK have a simple headed goal to make it 2-1.

Bathgate had a couple more attacks with Swan in particular having a couple of well time runs only to be beaten by the strenghth of the wind.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 2 Bathgate Thistle 1

Disaster struck for Roselea just three minutes into the second half as they equalsed from a penalty of their own in 48 minutes. A well timed run from Swan saw him get the better of a very square Roselea back four and he ran goalwards only to be bundled down by Richardson who much to his relief only saw yellow. In similar conditions and pressure to the ones that Taylor faced in the first half WHITE made sure with a composed penalty to beat Gray.

Roselea started the half a bit ragged and seemed to be loosing their composure after doing so well first half and Gray had to be sharp to come out and smother from danger man Swan.

Both teams were creating chances with the game evenly poised however it was going to take something special to win such an evenly poised game.

In 79 minutes Ross of Roselea brought a ball down beautifully and his touch took him inside the defender but his left footed shot was too straight at keeper Reid.

Roselea made a change in 80 mins when Watson replaced the tiring Brand,

Roselea had two big penalty claims in the space of a minute when first Cruickshank then Reid both went past defender Robinson only to be bundled to the ground but on both occasions play raged on.

Gray had a great save for Roselea when the undoubted dangerman for Bathgate, Swan cut inside and hit a rasping 30 yard goalward shot which the young keeper tipped round the post in 86 minutes.

Roselea pressed at the end and Watson and Reid had chances to break through however they were both given offside which must have been close calls.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 2 Bathgate Thistle 2

Considering the League placings Roselea might have been happy with a point in such circumstances however having gone into a lead early on nobody could grudge them looking for the 3 points. Once Bathgate equalised it was maybe a case of both teams were happy with the point and if either had snatched it would have been a travesty. Results elsewhere generally went in Roselea’s favour which meant they kept their survival spot in fifth bottom.

This week Roselea face Kinnoull at home in the League and will hope for revenge and a better result than the 4-1 loss a few weeks ago in Perth when missed chances cost them. Kick Off is at 2.30pm at Broomfield Park.
