Charles W. Flanagan High School Baseball

The Flanagan Falcons were well represented in the 2007 Amatuer Baseball Draft with 3 players selected to professional teams. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected catcher Nick Navarro in the 22nd round and then shortstop Luis Penate with their next pick in the 23rd round. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays selected catcher Joel Carranza with their 23rd round pick (2 spots ahead of Penate). All 3 players will have until August 15th to make their decisions on pursuing a professional career now or to attend college.

The Florida Sports Writers Association released the 2007 ALL-STATE Teams this past weekend and 5 Falcons were on the lists. Junior pitcher RJ Fondon, Junior 3B Rolando Gomez and Senior RF/C Joel Carranza were named 2nd Team ALL-STATE. Senior CF Chris Connelly was named 3rd Team and Senior catcher Nick Navarro was named honorable mention ALL-STATE.

The Broward-Herald All Sports Breakfast was held on Friday morning at 8:30am. Flanagan was well represented as the baseball program swept all 3 top awards.

Junior lefthanded pitcher R.J. Fondon was named the Broward Pitcher of the Year after posting a 10-1 record and a 1.85 ERA.

Senior RF/C Joel Carranza was named the Broward Player of the Year with a County leading .514 batting average. He had a Flanagan record 27 game hitting streak which included 11 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs and 35 RBI.

4th Year Head Coach Ray Evans was named the Broward Coach of the Year for the 3rd time guiding his program to the Class 6A State Tournament for the 3rd consecutive season. The Falcons set a State Record 54 home runs in 2007. Flanagan has won 3 District Titles, 3 Regional Titles and 2 State Titles in Evans' 4 year tenure.  

The 9th ranked Flanagan Falcons are headed back to Sarasota for a third straight year after a 5-0 shutout of #6 Palm Beach Central in the Regional Finals. RJ Fondon(10-0) was magnificent allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs in the complete game. The offense was led by senior LF Jesse Mesa who had a double and triple with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored in the game. The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when leadoff hitter Rolando Gomez had a infield hit. He advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by TJ Foard and then scored on a throwing error by the 1st baseman. In the 3rd inning Jesse Mesa led off with a double to the left centerfield wall and scored on a RBI basehit by Joel Carranza. The Falcons iced the game in the 5th inning when Mesa tripled to left field scoring Chris Connelly and DJ Swatscheno. Mesa would score the final run when TJ Foard singled to left field. The rest of the game was the RJ Fondon show!!! His pitching and stellar defense helped preserve the shutout win. Flanagan advances to the Class 6A State Semifinal on Friday May 18th where they host the DeLand Bulldogs. The State Tournament is held at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. The 6A State Championship game is on Saturday May 19th. Team Records: Flanagan(23-7) PB Central(24-7)
