Falcons go 1-1 on Orlando Trip

Posted by Joe Chacko at Mar 29, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Flanagan Falcons returned home today from their weekend trip to Orlando with a split in the 2 games winning Friday night against Timber Creek and losing a heart breaker in 11 innings to Boone.

Flanagan(11-5) began the trip with a solid 2-0 win on Friday night over Orlando-Timber Creek(11-6). Falcons starting pitcher RJ Fondon pitched a complete game, 3 hit, shutout striking out 10 Wolves on the night to post his 4th win of the season. The Falcons finally broke a scorless tie in the 5th inning plating 2 runs on Ali Sanchez's single to left field. Zach Jackson and Collin Martindale would come around and score the only runs of the game. Sanchez and Jackson led the offense with 2 hits each.

On Saturday night the Falcons looked to finish their trip with 2 wins, early on it looked very promising as Flanagan(11-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Orlando-Boone in the 3rd inning thanks to Rolando Gomez. The senior shortstop homered in his 1st two at bats. A solo shot to right field in the 1st inning and then a 2 run blast in the 3rd inning. Flanagan ace Corey Witkowski seemed to be rolling along and with a 3 run lead it looked as though the Falcons would coast to the win. Boone(14-4) on the other hand had other plans.  In the bottom of the 5th inning the Braves would get 2 runners on base with 1 out.  The 9 hole hitter Greg Carlsen would change the game with one swing of the bat, a line drive 3 run home run down the left field line quickly tied the game at 3-3 and what looked like a quick win turned into an 11 inning marathon. Rudy Miret would relieve Witkowski in the 6th inning and keep Boone scoreless until the bottom of the 11th inning. The Braves got a lead off single from the pitcher Mitchell Brennan and after a successful sacrifice bunt the 3rd baseman Josh Belvin would come up with the game winning double to deep left centerfield ending the game 4-3. Both Flanagan pitchers were terrific in the game. Witkowski pitched 5 and 2/3 inning allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 7 while Miret(0-1) took the loss pitching 4 and 2/3 innings. He allowed 1 run on 6 hits and struck out 4. Flanagan's offense was non existent in the game with the exception of Gomez who went 4 for 5 (only 4 hits by the Falcons in the game) with a double, 2 home runs(5th & 6th) and the 3 runs batted in.

The Falcons return home to host St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday night at 6:30 and Miami-Monsignor Pace on Friday Night at 6:30.

C-DUBB NO HITS TARAVELLA

Posted by Joe Chacko at Mar 18, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Flanagan Senior lefthander Corey Witkowski did something that his brother never did as a Falcons ace. He pitched a No hitter, striking out 12 Trojans giving the fans and coaches a glimps of the dominating past left by his brother. He commanded both sides of the plate facing just 2 more batters then the minimum.

The offense was just as dominating, with Taravella rolling into the game as the only undefeated team in Broward county at 12-0 the Falcons made sure to leave no doubt as to who still owns this County. Seniors Ali Sanchez and Rolando Gomez combined to go 7 for 8 with 4 doubles, 3 runs  scored and 5 RBI. Mike Carballo went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Junior 3rd baseman Ryan Smith added 2 hits and an RBI. Flanagan improved to 8-5 on the season and Taravella dropped to 12-1.

Flanagan will travel to McArthur tomorrow night to face the Mustangs in a District 12 matchup. Game time is set for 6:30pm.
