Falcons Crush Cowboys 16-3 in District Opener

For Cooper City(1-2, 0-1) the night couldn't have started better; they got the Falcons out in the top of the 1st inning and proceeded to score a run in the bottom half of the frame to take a 1-0 lead after 1 inning. That would be the end of their "good night" as Flanagan reeled off 9 runs on 8 hits in the top of the 2nd inning. "Talk about stirring up a bees nest!" That was a statement made by one of the coaches. So. LF- Danny Zardon (4 for 4, 3 runs, 4 RBI) started the inning with a hard line drive up the middle and scored on Andres Sanchez's 2nd HR of the season. Zardon and  Sanchez(3 for 4, 2 runs and 4 RBI) would later single and score on Robert Collin's double to right field in the same inning.

The Falcons(4-0, 1-0) would go on to score 4 runs in the 3rd and 3 more in the 4th for the final tally.

Pitching wise the Falcons relied on 4 guys to go through the 5 inning run rule shortened game. Sr. RHP-Matt Beauchemin started  but lasted only 1-1/3 inning. Jr. RHP Jose Mesa(1-0) earned his 1st Varsity win pitching 1-2/3 innings allowing just 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 2 batters. Jr. LHP- Mike Emigh pitched 1 inning allowing 2 singles but striking out the side. Sr. RHP- Robert Collin closed the game striking out 1 in the 5th inning.

The Falcons will host Western on Friday night at 6:30. Both teams come in undefeated and look to grab the early lead in District 12.

FALCONS CLAIM NIKE/OTS CHALLENGE TITLE

The Flanagan Falcons(3-0) won the 3rd annual Nike/OTS Challenge winning all 3 phases of the game. A dominant pitching performance by Sr. LH Mike Melendez, timely hitting from Seniors Robert Collin and Matt Beauchemin and some key defensive plays led to the 4-0 shutout of Calvary Christian Academy(1-2).

Melendez(2-0) was brilliant allowing just 2 hits and striking out 9 in the complete game, with 3 pitches at his disposal the senior had the Eagle batters off balance all night.

The Falcons defense was outstanding as well, turning 2 double plays the 1st off of a hussle play by sophomore LF Danny Zardon who kept a baserunner from stretching a hit into a double allowing the Falcons to turn a 6-4-3 double play on the next hitter. Later in the game a hot shot to 1B Zack Collins was fielded as he stepped on 1st and threw to Sr. SS Ricky Santiago at 2nd base for the tag play. Santiago made a great scoop on the throw to complete the double play.

Phase 3 the Falcons had timely hitting as Sr. RF Robert Collin(2 for 2, 2 2B's, run, 2 RBI) drove a line drive double to right center scoring Collins and Zardon giving the Falcons the early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Later in the game Collin would score on a great baserunning play. After doubling for the 2nd time in the game he would score from 2nd base on a grounder to SS. With 2 outs Collin ran hard without stopping and when the SS throw was offline at 1st base Collin slide in uncontested for the 3rd run of the game. Sr. DH Matt Beauchemin(1 for 2, BB, HR, 1 RBI) would put the game away with a mammoth blast to left centerfield. He would be be named Tournament Offensive player going 7 for 8 during the week.

Flanagan will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Cooper City to open up District play.
