Falcons beat Wildcats in District Contest

Posted by Ray Evans at Feb 26, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons move to 2-0 in the District with the win over the Western Wildcats. Jose Mesa led the way with a masterful pitching performance. Mesa and his upper 80 mph fastball dominated the Wildcats all night. He went 6 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run. He struckout 13 and had 4 BB on the night. Gentry Fortuno had 1 K while pitching the 7th inning to close out the game.

The offense was led by Andres Visbal 2-3, 2 runs scored and Andres Sanchez 2-3, 2 RBI's, 1 run scored.

The Falcons struck first in the top of the second inning with an RBI double by Ryan Dodge to score Daniel Oliveri who got on base by a HBP. The Wildcats came right back in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Gabriel deposited a Mesa fastball over the left field fence to tie the score at 1. That would be the only runner to cross the plate for the Wildcats though.

The Falcons answered right back with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd. Visbal walked and Sanchez drove him in with a double to the gap. Daniel Oliveri got an RBI when he drove in Sanchez with a sacrifice fly. That made the score 3-1 after 3 innings.

The Falcons tacked on 3 more runs in the 4th to make the score 6-1. Oscar Rodriguez led off with a walk and Visbal singled. AJ Munoz laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. The third baseman made an errant throw and AJ was safe. Rodriguez and Visbal scored on the play. Sanchez got his 2nd RBI on the night when he singled home Munoz.

In the 7th the Falcons capped off their scoring when Rick Sanchez led off with a 2B. He eventually scored on a 2 out error by the third baseman to make the score 7-1.

The Falcons (4-1, 2-0) take on Cypress Bay in a District contest this Friday at Home at 6:30 pm.

The JV got to play under the lights against visiting St. Thomas and made the most of it with a 6-4 victory. Andres Rios had the big hit with a bases loaded double off the fence to clear the bases. Rios finished the night 2-3 with 3 RBI. Oscar Rodriguez helped out offensively going 2-2, with a stolen base and scored a run.

Alejandro Garcia started the game throwing 2 scoreless innings and only giving up 1 hit. Peter Guarner came in to pitch the 3rd & 4th inning and gave up 1 run. Scotty Swatscheno came in and once again pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief gaining the victory.

In the 7th inning with only 3 outs needed to secure the victory and the score at 6-1, Oscar Rodriguez was called on to pitch the final inning.  The falcons opened the door for a possible Aquinas comeback. With the score 6-4 and runners on 1st & 2nd a ground ball was hit in the hole between the SS and the 3rd baseman for a probable hit. The falcons escaped any further damage when the runner trying to advance to 3rd was hit by the ball and subsequently the game ended.

The JV (3-0) will travel to Douglas for a doubleheader this Saturday to try and continue their winning ways. Game times are 10am and 1pm.
