Falcons Silence Bobcats in District Showdown

Posted by Ray Evans at Mar 9, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Flanagan Falcons/ West Broward Bobcats matchup has become one of the best rivalry's in the county in the past couple of years. Falcon Field was standing room only with over 200 fans in attendance to watch the Falcons (7-1, 5-0) host the Bobcats from West Broward (7-1, 4-1) in a game that would decide first place in the district for the first half of district play.

The Falcons came out swinging, scoring early and often in each of the first four innings, with 1 in the 1st & 2nd inning, and 3 & 4 runs in the 3rd & 4th innings respectively. The Falcons totaled 9 runs on 11 hits on the night. Andres Sanchez got the offense rolling and the Falcons on the scoreboard with a solo homerun to deep left field in the bottom of the 1st.

In the 2nd inning the Falcons had a chance to break it open but couldn't take care of business. After a beautiful bunt down third by Rafael Betances, the bases were loaded with no outs.  After walking Ryan Dodge to make it 2-0 the West Broward pitcher, Tyler Draughon, settled down to get the next 3 hitters and keep the game in check at 2-0.

In the 3rd inning Rick Sanchez fouled off several pitches and finally got one he could handle. He doubled into deep left field with one out to get things started. With 2 outs and first base open, the Bobcats decided to walk Mesa and face Betances. Betances greated them with an RBI single up the middle to score Sanchez from second to make it 3-0. After a passed ball and runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out, Ryan Dodge broke open the game with a 2 RBI clutch double to expand the lead to 5-0 in the 3rd inning.

In the 4th inning the Falcons broke it open with a barrage of hits and walks. With one out, Munoz fouled off 4-5 pitches before finally drawing a walk. Andres Sanchez followed with a sharp single and Rick Sanchez walked to load the bases. Daniel Oliveri hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run and make it 6-0. With 2 outs and men on 1st and 2nd, Jose Mesa stepped up and put the game out of reach with a long homerun to left field to make the score 9-0. That finished the scoring on the night for the Falcons.

While the offense was doing their job, Mesa was settling in for another great pitching performance. Mesa got in and out of jams in the 2nd, 3rd and 6th innings.  Mesa had another No-Hit performance through 6 innings, and has not given up a hit or run in the last 17 innings he has pitched.  Fortuno came in to relieve Mesa, who had reached his pitched count, in the 7th inning to close out the game. With 2 out and the No-Hitter in site, the West Broward hitter scorched a ball toward first that took a bad hop and came up to hit Ryan Dodge in the cheek. Although Ryan was alright, the No-Hittter was lost and the staff settled for a one hit shutout.

Andres Sanchez - 2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI, HR

Rick Sanchez  - 2-3, 2 runs, 2 2B's, BB

Jose Mesa - 2-2, 2 runs, 3 RBI, HR, 2 BB's, 6 IP, 9 K's, No Hits

Rafael Betances -  3-3, 1 run, 1 RBI, HBP

Ryan Dodge - 2-3, 3 RBI, 2B, BB

The Falcons (7-1, 5-0) will take the show on the road to Sarasota where they will be playing in the Sarasota Classic during spring break.
