Falcons Suffer 1st District Loss

Posted by Ray Evans at Apr 3, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons were shorthanded when they took the field against the Cypress Bay Lightning Wednesday night which ended in a 5-2 defeat. With only 12 players in the dugout because of disciplinary actions that were taken, the Falcons put up a good fight but could not overcome a couple of key mistakes that were made in the game.

Kharlin Sued (1-2) started the game on the hill and pitched a very good game, but suffered the loss. Sued went 5 2/3 innings, yielding 5 runs, 3 earned, on 7 hits while striking out 9 and walking 1. Freshman Steven Gonzalez got his feet wet on the Varsity by getting the final out of the 6th inning.

Sued also led the offense as well getting 2 of the 6 hits on the night. The Falcons were only able to muster up 6 hits which might have been enough to win if it hadn't been for the bad defense played during the 5th inning. Down 1-0 going into the top of the 3rd, Luis Barranco singled with 1 out. Freshman Edward Schissler got a start in left field and made the most of it when he tripled in Barranco to tie the game in his first Varsity at-bat for an RBI. The next hitter was Eric Rivera, who hit a sac fly to centerfield to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Falcons. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth.  With 2 outs and a runner on first, Sued picked off the runner on first, but the Falcons botched the run down which would of ended the inning, instead the runner got back to 1st base safely and the inning continued. The next hitter singled and with Lightning runners on 1st and 2nd the wheels fell off for the Falcons. The next batter singled to center, and Rivera made a great attempt to throw the runner out at the plate. The runner knocked the ball loose from the catcher and got away just enough for the runners to try and advance. With two runners in limbo at second base, Sued got the loose ball and tried to get one of them at 2nd base.  The ball was over thrown and got by Schissler in left field, who was trying to backup the play, and rolled all the way to the fence letting both runners come around to score to give the Lightning a 4-2 lead. The Lightning tacked on another run in the bottom of the 6th inning to make the score 5-2, which is how the game ended.

The Falcons (12-4, 7-1) will be at home on Friday at 6:30pm when it takes on Everglades in another District matchup.

On the last day of the Tradition Classic and a chance to go 3-0 against some quality opponents, the Falcons just ran out of steam and couldn't put much of an offensive attack together to stay up with the Palm Beach Central Broncos. The Falcons ended up losing the final game 6-1.

Khalin Sued started on the hill for the Falcons pitching 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, 3 earned, on 6 hits, while striking out  1 and walking 2. Chris Rodriguez pitched the final 2 innings giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits, while striking out 1 and  walking 1.

The offense never found the big hit it needed as the Stallions recorded 2 double plays and the Falcons stranded 7 baserunners. Brandon Melendez went 2-3 while Ryan Dodge, Oscar Rodriguez and AJ Munoz all went 1-3 on the day.

Flanagan beats Spruce Creek

Posted by Ray Evans at Mar 29, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

In the second game of the Tradition Classic hosted by Timber Creek the Falcons were matched up against the 2012 Class 8A State Champs, the Spruce Creek Hawks. The Falcons came back from a 6-1 deficit to win a hard fought contest 8-6.

Gentry Fortuno started on the hill for Flanagan and was rolling along until the top of the 3rd inning when he hit the leadoff hitter. The game went into a 45 minute delay and gave the Hawks some momentum. It definitely shook up Fortuno as Spruce Creek was able to score 5 runs to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning the Falcons got one back to make the score 5-1. Fortuno stayed in the game and battled against the State Champs to keep the Falcons in the game. Fortuno ended up pitching 6 innings, giving up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3 to get the win. Chris Rodriguez pitched the final inning to get the save after the Falcons were able to fight back and take the lead 8-6. Rodriguez gave up no runs on 1 hit while striking out 1.

The Falcons offense had a huge 6th inning to come back from a 6-3 deficit. Eric Rivera had the 2 RBI go ahead hit but only after Kharlin Sued had a big pinch hit 2 RBI single to tie the game. Rivera finished 2-4 with 3 RBI's on the day. Ryan Dodge went 2-2 with a HBP and scored a run as well.
