Falcons Win Tournament Championship

Posted by Ray Evans at Feb 16, 2014 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons (3-0) won their Tournament Championship for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. They downed the Douglas Eagles 2-0 on a night where there was a lack of hitting due to some great pitching performances from both teams.

Falcons Gentry Fortuno (1-0) was unhittable through 5 1/3. The junior gave up his first hit in the 6th inning with 1 out. He ended up pitching a 2 hit shutout with the help of some timely defense from his teammates.

The defense made play after play all night long for Gentry. The infielders were perfect as the left side of the infield had 9 assists on the night. The outfield got into it as well when a Douglas runner was thrown out trying to stretch the first hit of the night off Fortuno into a double.  Eric Rivera, who was 2-3 with an RBI on the night, came up firing from left field to throw him out at 2B for the 2nd out of the 6th inning. The game would end when the Eagles were threatening in the top of the 7th with runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. The Eagles' DH, Bottomly, got a base hit up the middle and the runner from second tried to score.  Centerfielder Oscar Rodriguez came up firing to catcher Miguel Presno to cut the runner down at the plate for the third and final out of the game.  It was a great way to end a night that had very little offense from either side, but solid defense and pitching all night long.

The Falcons (3-0) will start District play on Tuesday when they host the Everglades Gators at 6:30pm.

Falcons Down Spartans in Home Opener

Posted by Ray Evans at Feb 10, 2014 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Falcons opened up the 2014 season with a 8-3 win over the Monsignor Pace Spartans. The Falcons got off to a slow start when they fell behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning. They quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning after a Oscar Rodriguez single and a Ryan Dodge walk the Spartans made a two out error which tied the game 1-1.

Starter Alex Sarmiento didn't have his best stuff but only gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1. He left the game after 4 innings and got a no decision on the evening.  Chris Rodriguez came in to relieve Sarmiento in the 5th.

The game stayed that way until the top of the 4th inning. The Spartans capitalized on a two out error by outfielder David Sarmiento and took the lead 3-1. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Falcons got going and got some runs on the board. Miguel Presno led off with a HBP and Andres Rios followed that up with a walk. With men on 1st and 2nd and no outs David Sarmiento laid down a bunt the Spartan pitcher couldn't handle to load the bases. After an Oscar Rodriguez strikeout and a bases loaded walk by Ryan Dodge, and a strikeout by Eddie Schissler the score was 3-2. Kharlin Sued came up to bat with 2 outs, base loaded and his team down 3-2. Sued delivered with a 2 RBI single to right center for the Falcons to take the lead 4-3. Kevin Mora walked to load the bases again and Luis Barranco followed that up with bases loaded walk to make the score 5-3.

While the offense was putting runs on the scoreboard, Chris Rodriguez continued to keep the Spartans from crossing the plate and ended up getting the win in relief. In the bottom of the 6th the Falcons tacked on 3 more runs. Rios led off the inning with his 3rd walk of the evening. Sarmiento attempted to sacrifice Rios to 2nd when the throw got away from the 1st baseman and the Falcons had runners at 2nd and 3rd. Oscar Rodriguez and Ryan Dodge had back to back HBP's. After Eddie Schissler's RBI single and Kevin Mora's RBI sacrifice fly the score stood at 8-3, which is how the game finally ended.

Standout performers on the evening:

Chris Rodriguez (1-0) - 3 IP, 0 runs, 3 hits, 4 K's

Andres Rios - 1-1, 3 BB's, 2 runs scored, 1 SB

Kharlin Sued - 1-3, 2 RBI's
