  • By HEATHER GILMORE - NY Post September 25, 2006 -- A memorial for Radomir Kovacevic, an Olympic judo medalist and Queens father of three who died of cancer on June 14, will be held next week. Kovacevic, 52, of Forest Hills, was a gentle giant of a man who represented Yugoslavia in three Olympics and won a bronze medal in 1980. Shortly after immigrating here in 1985, he gave a judo demonstration at the private Dwight School on the Upper West Side. He spoke of his new-found freedom and sang songs in three languages in a signature booming voice that perfectly fit his 6-foot-4, 290-pound frame. The rousing display spurred Chancellor Stephen Spahn to hire him nearly on the spot, and Kovacevic grew to legendary status at the school. He inspired students - many of them from privileged backgrounds - to get up early for practice and exert themselves to attain heights they didn't know were within their reach. Kovacevic is survived by his wife, Savka, and teen children, Katarina, Aleksandra and Perun. The memorial is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Crenshaw Christian Center East at 1 W. 96th St.image

We suggest you bring a bottle of water with you in case the school fountains are not working. Parents are encouraged to help support our League by purchasing FHBL shorts, sweatbands, drawstring bags and other merchandise while they wait. The player evaluations and ratings session is MANDATORY. It enables us to rate your skill level so that we can form the teams in your division as fairly as possible. Failure to show up for your evaluation makes it impossible for us to know your skill level and to make an informed decision as to which team your should be placed. Please check the following schedule for your specific time to arrive. The schedule has been prepared alphabetically ACCORDING TO YOUR LAST NAME in order to minimize the overcrowding that previously took place in the waiting area and the length of time parents had to wait for their children to be evaluated. Please do not come at any other time except the one for which you are scheduled. We will NOT take players out of the order set forth on the schedule. Upon arrival, report to the reception desk to register for your evaluation and to receive your numbered tag. Listen carefully for your number to be called. When you are finished with your evaluation, remove your tag and safety pin before leaving the building. PARENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED INTO THE 2ND GYM WHERE THE EVALUATIONS ARE TAKING PLACE. PLEASE DO NOT DISRUPT THE SESSIONS BY TRYING TO PEAK INSIDE.image
