Westford Over-30 Slow-Pitch Softball

Pro Sports Therapy 23 - Healy Oil 15 Pro Sports Therapy worked out the kinks in their offense and managed a solid win against Healy Oil, 23-15. It was a good old-fashioned slugfest where the defense wasn't always pretty. Newcomer Bill Cullen led Pro Sports with 4 RBI on a night where everyone got involved and scored at least one run. Tom Rose, Jerry Cressman, Dave Weaver, and Larry Zupkosky each hit home runs for the winners.

Mario’s Restaurant 9, Drew Farms 7 In a season where lopsided scores are the norm, Mario’s Restaurant and Drew Farms played out the unusual—a close game that Mario’s won, 9-7. In the first inning, Jon Russo hit a two-run homer as Mario’s jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Drew Farms climbed back with three runs in the third, eventually tying the game at 7 in the bottom of the sixth. Jerod Colley had a big two-run run home run to put Mario’s ahead for good, and Chris Brooks ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with a defensive stop at second base. Pitcher Thanh Nguyen earned his first win for Mario’s. Gary Lavelle and Todd Shepherd each hit home runs for Drew Farms. Tom Menicci, Matt Chamberlain and Todd had a multiple hit game. Don Barnas nearly collected his first triple of his career, but a perfect throw cut him down.

Floral Arts 8 - Pro Sport Therapy 1 In a rainy game on Wednesday that the umpire ended in the sixth inning, Floral Arts defeated Pro Sports Therapy, 8-1. Jim Peloquin hit two home runs and knocked in four for reigning champs Floral Arts. Despite the conditions, both teams played solid defense. Jonathan Morgan and Tom Semeter also homered for the winners.

Short Cut 29 - Healy Oil 16 Short Cut won their first game of season, beating Healy Oil, 29-16 on Friday night. Rob Prendergast led Short Cut with five hits, and Chris Clark and Dave Sullivan each hit two homers. Dave O’Keefe hit a grand slam for Healy Oil and made an over-the-shoulder catch in the outfield.

Willis Tent 12 - Mario’s Restaurant 7 In a tight, low-scoring game, Willis Tent beat Mario’s Restaurant. 12-7. John Geary (home run, two RBI), Dave Batchelder (home run and four RBI) and Jerod Colley (3-for-3) led the way offensively for Mario’s. There were four lead changes in the game, and the biggest lead was never more than one run until the end of the seventh inning when Willis scored four runs. Thanh Nguyen pitched well for Mario’s.

Mustangs 27 – Pro Sports Therapy 14 The Mustangs pounded yet another team into submission, defeating Pro Sports Therapy, 27-14. It was a close game until the fifth inning when the Mustangs scored seven runs. The Mustangs hit six home runs, and 12 of 13 players scored at least once while 12 of 13 had at least one RBI. Paul Selfridge went 5-for-5 and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Mark Cusano, Don Cusano, and Jack Erickson each had four hits. Mark Urlage led Pro Sports Therapy by hitting a triple, a homer, and knocking in five runs. Dave Weaver had three hits, including a triple. PST also had homers from Tom Rose (2), Steve Nolan and Dave Chirokas.

Floral Arts 21, Drew Farms 8 Mark LeFebvre (3-for-4, three runs, RBI) was the sparkplug in the Floral Arts line up as Floral Arts defeated Drew Farms, 21-8. Greg Marchand had a big night offensively and defensively, hitting a home run and a double, and converting a diving catch in the outfield into a double play. Jonathan Morgan, Tom Semeter, Simon Tripp and Geoff Pavao also homered for the winners, and Billy Luppold and Dean Wormell each had two hits. Todd Shepherd hit a long home run for Drew Farms.

Mustangs 17, Willis Tent 4 Jack Erickson hit three home runs and knocked in seven as the Mustangs collapsed Willis Tent, 17-4. Bill Knute (3-for-3) and Paul Liquori (2-for-2) and came on to pitch well in relief after starter Don Cusano left with an injury after throwing three innings of shutout ball.

Short Cut 23 - Floral Arts 10 Short Cuts beat Floral Arts for the first time in three years, 23-10. The powerful Short Cut offense hit 11 home runs, a team-record. Rob Prendergast hit a homer and pitched a good game. Mike Gross had three homers and Steve Jacobsmeier hit a grand slam. Simon Tripp (2-for-2, grand slam, walk), Roger Whittlesey (2-for-2, two RBI), Dean Wormel (2-for-3, RBI), Jim Peloquin (2-for-3, walk, two runs) played well for Floral Arts.

Wet weather has once again forced the town Rec Department to close the fields.  Tonight's games have been postponed, and will be played on Sunday, June 24th.

Week One Round Up

Healy Oil 15 - Mario’s Restaurant 8 Healy Oil played a slick game against Mario’s restaurant, serving up a 15-8 loss in the season opener on Wednesday night. Mario’s started strong, as John Geary led off with a home run. Ragu Mantena, Thanh Nguyen and Dave Batchelder also homered for Mario’s. Mantena’s three-run shot was the first of his career. Mario’s lead was short-lived as Healy went up 6-2 and then 12-4, before a late Mario’s rally plated four runs in the seventh inning. Rick Waldron turned in a nice defensive effort at third base for Mario’s.

Drew Farms 18 - Pro Sports Therapy 12 Drew Farms put up nine runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game. Drew Farm’s defense was perfect, and every player delivered at least one hit. Todd Shepherd (2), Jim Sullivan (2), Tom Menicci, Dave Guthrie, Scott Cole, and Gary Lavelle hit home runs for the winners. Don Barnas pitched a complete game and newcomer Eric Carlyle notched the first hit of his career. Pro Sports Dave Chirokas did his best to keep his squad in the game, hitting a career best three home runs. Steve Nolan made a big splash in his Westford Over 30 Softball debut by recording three hits and making a couple of standout plays on defense.

Mustangs 22 - Shortcuts 9 Mustangs exceeded the six home run limit in 22-9 win over Shortcuts that only took five innings to play on Friday night. Craig Smith and Don Cusano each hit two home runs for Mustangs, Jay Dolan added one, and Jay Lincoln socked a grand slam. The Mustangs squelched a few potential rallies with a great catch by Jack Erickson at the fence and a key double play by infielders Paul Selfridge, Paul Liguori, and Brian Foley.

Floral Arts 22 - Willis Tent 3 Floral Arts applied constant pressure in a 22-3 win over Willis Tent on Friday night. Mike Alonardo (3-3 2 HR, 6 RBI) led the balanced attack, with Roger Whittlesey, Jim Peloquin, Tom Semeter, and Simon Tripp each chipping in a home run. Larry Mardany limited the Willis attack, giving up a solo home run to Kevin Adolf, and a two-run shot to Jeff Briggs. Frank Lancelotta, Larry Mardany, and Mark LeFebvre each hit a double and scored multiple runs for Floral Arts.

Willis Tent 26 - Shortcut 12 Willis Tent bounced back from a loss in its season opener by defeating Shortcut, 26-12. Both teams hit more than six home runs in the five-inning contest.

Mustangs 23 - Floral Arts 9 The Mustangs were solid up and down their lineup and played excellent defense in their five-inning destruction of Floral Arts. Bill Knute led the way for the offense, hitting two home runs and chipping in four RBI. Don Cusano, Mark Cusano, Paul Selfridge and Jack Erickson also hit the long ball for Mustangs. Floral Arts got offense contribution from Jonathan Morgan and Frank Lancelotta, but were sloppy in the field, leading to two double-digit innings for Mustangs.

Due to Tuesday's wet weather, the town has closed the fields forcing tonight's games to be postponed.  They will now be played on Sunday, June 10th, at 5:30 and 6:45 PM.

With the rain that has finally arrived in the area, the fields have been closed by the Rec Department and Opening Night has to be postponed.

Tonight's games will be played on Sunday at 5:30 (Willis Tent-SCL) and 6:45 (Mustang-Floral Arts).
