The Village Lady Vikings are coming off of the best season in school history, with a 24-7 record, and a trip to the TAPPS 4A Quarterfinal. This success was sparked by a group of juniors, who return for their senior year, with extremely high expectations. To make the task even tougher, the Lady Vikings will compete in TAPPS 6A. They are also playing an extremely challenging non-District schedule.

“Last year was a tremendous year. Our success occurred because of our ability to attack the daily process of getting better. This year, we are a new team, which will face new challenges. Our biggest challenge is our lack of depth, as half of our roster has very limited experience. We have also put together one of the toughest schedules in school history. Throughout this season, we will play multiple 6A public schools, SPC teams, and could see over ten state-ranked opponents. We are even scheduled to compete against a potential McDonald’s All-American (Alexis Morris, #18 ranked player in the country). This schedule will prepare us for our District schedule, in January, as we aim to make another run at the State Tournament,” Coach Brotherton said.

The team will be led by four seniors; Starlyn F, Amber P, Elisa F, and Caren E. Junior Liz M and Sophomore Kennedy D will also play very critical roles in the success of the team.
“There is no doubt that our program has elevated to its current level, because of the work put in by our seniors. Starlyn and Amber came to the Village School three years ago, and helped change the culture of our program. Elisa joined us last year, and has been a huge part of our success. Caren is a ‘program kid,’ as she has worked her tail off to develop over her four years. This group has put our program on the map. I am forever grateful to these seniors, their families, and it is our mission to honor them with a wonderful season,” said Coach Brotherton.

Sports Media Day is quickly becoming one of the most fun events in athletics. Each season, our high school sports teams have the opportunity to take team and individual photos, Media Guide cover shots, Senior banner pictures, and have 2 members of each team accompany their coach to be interviewed. In the fall, Double Dave’s pizza catered the event. There was also had music and a slideshow playing throughout while our athletes socialized, danced, and had fun.

Winter Media Day took on an added theme. The event was sponsored by Gatorade, so each athlete had the opportunity to try different Gatorade products. After the pictures we taken, each Varsity coach and there 2 selected team representatives went to the Athletic Center for their interviews. It was an awesome experience for our athletes and coaches to answer questions about their program, including what their expectations are, who they are looking forward to playing the most, and the athletes that are poised to have a break out season!

On Saturday, October 29th, the Viking varsity harriers traveled to Waco for the TAPPS State Championships. This was The Village School’s first foray into the 6A(Large School) classification, moving up from 4A. The teams held their own, with the girls finishing 11th of 17 and the boys finishing 13th of 19.

Individually, Charlotte and Alexandre received Top 10 honors finishing 9th in their respective races. Other notable performances were Fernanda, running 13:56, taking 30 seconds off of her 3200m season best. Kaushal obliterated his 5k PR by 39 seconds, finishing 23rd in 17:36. Evan smashed his 5k PR by almost 30 seconds, running 19:35. Marco was on his way to a new PR but due to his incredible selflessness, stopped to carry a struggling teammate across the finish line. This gesture, for me, was the highlight of the weekend and I can’t say enough about this act. Congratulations to these runners for stepping up at the biggest meet of the year.

Overall, the 2016 season was a huge success with almost everyone improving their times from September and getting a couple of meet wins on the boys side. I thoroughly enjoyed working with every athlete this season and hope to see everyone on the (NEW!)track in February.

In the TAPPS Independent State Tournament, the Village Vikings faced Austin St. Dominic Savio. The team put on a phenomenal show lead by defensive players Jon S, Jeremy S, and Patrick S. The Defensive unit held Savio’s high powered offense to 12 points. The offensive side of the ball was lead by Khalil M’s 3 rushing touchdowns and an impressive performance by Kaelin R and the Viking offensive line. With the 21-12 win over Savio, The Vikings are excited to play El Paso this Saturday 7pm in a winner take all showdown in Brownwood, TX. Coach Bagot and his coaching staff are excited about the opportunity to have the guys represent Village and fight for an Independent State Title.
