Tough weekend for Schuylkill with two road losses
It was a tough weekend for Schuylkill River Rugby dropping two matches on the road. Troop was simply overmatched in a 67-0 loss to Northeast Irish while the Exiles were defeated by Pittsburgh 36-15.
Regarding the Irish match, Coach Mininger stated “NE Irish were a very physical side and did a great job of controlling the possession and pace of the game, making it really hard for us to get into any kind of a flow. The Irish finished at the top of the table last year and continued that level of play. our guys played hard from start to finish and had some individuals put in some really high work rates but, we just weren’t able to gain any momentum. we left knowing what we need to do going forward and will have a short turn around to get back on the pitch together at Blackthorn next weekend. being on the wrong end of result like that hurts and we’re ready to get back to work.”
Loose forward Ross McMonigle played a strong match and never gave up despite the scoreline. He probably made more than 20 tackles and was named Man of the Match by Coach. Other individuals who put in a solid effort included Johnathan Hines Jr, Jabari Johnson, Ryan Tower, Lake Paul, and Dave Hilley.
According to Coach Burch, in the Pittsburgh match the exiles “came out strong but then we put ourselves in a hole. Down 26-5 at half we seemed to be chasing the game. It was not about us being outmatched but about the mistakes we made.”
8 man Randy Helsman had a strong match and scored 3 tries in the process and other strong performers included Brian Keown, Sean Barnes, and Ian Glatts.
The Exiles host the Washington Irish this weekend while Troop travels to Blackthorn.
