Bulldogs Fall to Arlington in Season Opner

Posted by John Halsey at Jun 1, 2017 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Reading Bulldogs faced the Arlington Trojans in the season opener for both teams on Friday night in Arlington. With a four run fifth inning, the Trojans were able to pull away with a 4-3 victory.

The Bulldogs got on the board first with a bases loaded RBI single by JP Songin in the 4th. The next batter, Rosario Missiti, followed up with a two RBI single extending the lead to three.

With three strong innings of relief out of the bullpen, Reading’s pitcher, Alex Mandrus, allowed zero runs on only three hits.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Arlington was able to capitalize on three Reading errors to score four runs on two hits. Arlington’s big hit came when down 3-2 from left fielder RC Goodman with a two out two RBI single. Goodman’s hit gave Arlington a 4-3 lead through five innings which was enough for Arlington’s relief pitcher Matt Wesoloski .

Wesoloski shut down the Bulldogs hitters for the final two innings giving up only 1 hit and 0 runs. Wesoloski got the win while pitching the final three innings for Arlington. Reid Bryant received the loss for Reading.

Reading will take on the Watertown Reds on Sunday June 4th at Endicott College at 7:00pm.

Wrap:

The Bulldogs continued their early season struggles both on the mound and at the plate losing handily the Reds 9-0, in a game that was out-of-hand even before the Bulldogs had their fourth inning at-bat.

The Bulldogs are enduring some transitional pains in the first 10 days of the season as their new coach Dante Padovani assesses a roster which has had significant turnover from the prior season.

Reading put itself in a large hole early for the third straight game as they have now given up innings of five runs or greater in each of their losses.

After giving up three in the third inning, the Reds scored six runs with two outs in the fourth. The seven hit inning was topped by Justin Forman's base clearing triple which was his second extra base-hit in the game.

The Bulldogs received shutout relief from Padovani for three and a third innings which extended the teams scoreless relief streak to 14 innings in their lone bright spot on the season so far.

It doesn't get easier for the Bulldogs as they visit the Andre Chiefs at Maplewood Park in Malden on Monday evening at 8:00.
