Storm Take First Loss in Round Two

Posted by Brian Schmidt at May 18, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Almaden Redwings and the Almaden Storm matched up once again this season in round two of the District TOC tournament on Monday.  The first two meetings went to the Storm in close, hard fought battles and this contest would be no different.

The Redwings put six on the board through four innings and the Storm could manage nothing through any of the first four frames.  Then, in typical Storm fashion, the boys in black broke through with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth while blanking the wings in each of their half innings.

With the score 6-4 Redwings going to the top of the seventh, the Storm managed two more to tie the game and send it to the bottom of the seventh.  The first Wings batter drew a walk and the Storm defense worked the game into a two out situation with a runner on third.  Pitcher of the moment Doug Frazier coaxed a ground ball on the infield but the handle proved elusive and the runner scored from third to end the game.

The Storm go again Wednesday at Ida Price with their backs against the wall.

Storm Win Thrilling First Round Playoff

Posted by Brian Schmidt at May 16, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Your Almaden Storm dropped the home team hammer on the Angels from Branham Hills on Saturday in a marathon that saw 29 total runs cross the plate.  The Storm had not defeated the Angels in two prior meetings, and the third meeting proved to be another difficult challenge for the boys in black.

With the Storm down 14-12 after six and half innings, they gave it one last shot to overtake the Angels.  Max Aiken had relieved Schmidt and Dunne, allowing no runs in his 2 1/3 innings of work, but 14 runs had already crossed the plate before he arrived from the pen.  The Storm had cut the four run defecit to two in the sixth and now were taking one last crack at the Angels pitching.

Bang started the inning from the nine spot and lined a hard shot to second that was flagged on a diving play by the Angels second baseman.  One out.  Ryo cracked a triple to the wall in center and might have made it home for an inside the park home run, but he was held by his coach at third.  His run did not matter.  Biral grounded to second for out number two and the rbi was recorded.  One run game, two out, nobody on.  Justin Dunne flipped a first pitch curveball to shallow right and challenged the right fielder by taking second right in front of him as he moved too slowly to pick up the ball.  When right field finally retrieved it, he over threw second and the ball flew in to left field.  The third baseman took off after it and left the bag open for Justin to trot to third.  Runner on third on a harmless single to right, two down.

Frazier came to bat and worked hard for a 3-2 walk, taking a close pitch for ball four.  Schmidty came to bat with runners on first and third.  He took the first pitch as requested and Frazier took off for second.  Then the unbelievable happened.  The Angels catcher threw down to second.  Frazier was easily safe and Dunne ran home to tie the game.  Roland skied a huge fly on the next pitch behind second into shallow right field.  With two outs, Frazier took off with the hit.  The second baseman tripped going back on the ball and it was too shallow for the right fielder.  Frazier hit third as the ball hit the ground and raced home without a throw for the winning run.   Storm WIN!

A jumping mass of humanity mobbed Frazier at home as the team enjoyed the hard fought win.

Stay tuned for more exciting, high speed, Storm baseball.

Storm Drop Regular Season Finale

Posted by Brian Schmidt at May 13, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Storm hit the road for thier final regular season game yesterday and took on the first seed Lincoln Glen Red Sox on thier home field.  The boys in black took the lead in the first inning in typical Storm fashion and held it for most of the game behind an outstanding, two walk and four strikeout pitching performance by pitcher Brent Easton.  Easton left the mound after four with an 11-8 lead that would eventually turn in to a 15-14 Red Sox victory in a daylight shortened, six inning affair.  The game was called for darkness before the Storm could apply the pressure one last time and regain the lead.  They clinched the sixth best record in the sixteen team District 12 Juniors Division with a record of 9 wins and six losses, and are poised for a good run in the District Tournament.

Storm Win Fifth Straight

Posted by Brian Schmidt at May 12, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Your Almaden Storm won their fifth straight game at Ida Price on Tuesday night against the Cambrian Twins in classic, high speed, Storm fashion.  With the game tied 7-7 in the top of the sixth and the Storm scrapping from behind all game long, the visitors rolled off a relentless barrage of hits, walks, and stolen bases that knocked the Twins off their game and provided the Storm with a 10 run cushion.  Final score, 17-9.

The playoff seeding picture for Saturday's tournament opener remains unclear, but there is still business to conduct with one regular season game to play against the top seeded Lincoln Glen Red Sox.  The Storm are winners of 8 of their last 9 games and are ready to roll on Thursday against the Red Sox.

Go Storm!
