East Grand Rapids Pioneers Field Hockey 2010 (Division III) opened its season with a strong showing against Dearborn High School (Division IV) at Dearborn.  Varsity beat Dearborn 6-0 and Junior Varsity lost a close game on a lone second half goal.Varsity offence and mid field kept the ball in the Dearborn half and the defense and goal keeper was tested on just 2 occasions all game.Forwards Erica Rankin (1 goal) and Hanna Schneider (1 goal) kept the ball on the offense and EGR had 20 shots on goal.  Mid field led by Libby Mason (3 shots on goal) and Kate Brondyk (2 assists) kept inserting the ball into the opponents scoring circle and they were supported on the wings by Kristy  Allen (3 goals, 6 assists) and Megan McConnell (2 shots on goal).  Alex Kuske and Megan Elderkin contributed from the bench and played like starters. The defense choked the opponents attack with Anna Petko (1 goal) and Alexa Smeby defending the EGR circle and Sami Condi and Madison Scheper giving very little room to the opponents on the wings.  Sami was true to the team philosophy of “Offence is the best Defense”, she was fearless moving up to the opponents 25 yard line to defend.  Lena Henderson was strong in goal and she was credited with a shutout and 2 save in her first game of the season,  Lena was tested on two penalty corners by the opponents that she defended with authority.EGR rested forward Sarah Zezima, who is recovering from an injured ankle and Chandler Filion was unable to travel to the team due to illness.  Sarah’s recovery will be very vital in the two games on Wednesday September 1st as EGR takes on two Division I opponents, Academy of Sacred Heart (ASH) and Grosse Pointe South on the road at ASH.
